Hello everybody!
The same problem with my UX31 256GB... At first, green light in "power" and "capslock" buttons after sleep mode, screen is dark and there was no any reaction to power button - I tried to press power button 30sec, 60sec... Now (after some "open-close-to press power button" cases), it seems as laptop is not working completely, green light disappeared from buttons.
I read this topic, so I see that I'm not alone with this problem! As I understand, this issue is related to MB, this is not battery issue.
Can this problem be resolved quickly? I bought laptop in Russia, so I can't send it to Asus RMA directly. Warranty is ok, I should to send laptop to local warranty service. I hope, they can resolve issue.
I'm really unhappy because I had Wi-Fi issue before this "death" of laptop. Great laptop and set of problems... I hope, it will be fixed, I need my data soon![]()
And thank you all of you that you wrote about this issue, I was scared and thought "I'm alone with this issue"![]()

On saturday, my UX31E (i7, 256GB sandisk) died just liked that. Also at Turkish forums I've seen many people suffering from the same problem.
I've given my UX31 to the repair service yesterday and while I was writing here, I've received an SMS that it was repaired. (They've said it would take 5-7 work days). I guess Turkish Asus repair service is working like a thunder
Update: I've taken my UX31 from the service. They've renewed the mainboard and it's working again.

Hello mine died in what appears to be the same way as the OP, power, caps lock on but no screen, held down power button until it shut down and then turned back on, same thing. did this a few more times then the wireless light cam on with the other two. turned it off again then on and let it run with just the lights on (caps and power) battery ran dead. and then power button would not work at all. thought it was an RMA, but plugged it in one more time and turned it on and it fired right up.
i suspected it had to do with the suspend mode or hibernate mode. so i tred this and was able to repeat the issues. Right now I am manually shutting it off everytim i use it so there may be two failure modesworking here one software and one MB.
This happened right after i did the ASUS mandated critical bios update w windows BIOS flash update 2.32.3, dont know if related.
DO any Asus folks troll this board? if so please report this
Update 2/16/2012: it has happened twice more and each time it happened when it went into sleep mode OR hibernate mode, had to hit power button 2-3 times to get it to stay on (just the caps lock and power button lights and fan no screen and then let the battery draineither dead or for at least 20 minutes, then turning it off and restarting it. Each time it comes back up but i definitely DONT trust that it will work when need it.
Sending it in at this point would probably result in a "could not replicate problem" so i am hesitant to take this step with an intemittent problem. I have opened a ticket with ASUS and am awaiting their reply
I am on BIOS 210, and was thinking about flashing to 211 but waiting till I get home from europe Definite
Update 2/18/ 2012. Now experiencing complete failure I can get disk light caps lock and power LEDs to turn on if I plug it in but once I unplug the lights go dead so I can't drain it and reboot. Sounds like the MB issue all are having on this post. Debating just throwing it out as ASUS tech support is the worst I've had a ticket in with them for a week and they haven't bothered to respond even tho they say they will in 48 hours. I'll repost updates on how long my RMA takes here for future victims of this crap computer
Uodate 2/21/2012 Finally got thru to ASSus they make it intentionally hard to find any form of service numbers, chat for notebooks never is online. Finally got through and spoke with a fine fellow after 10 min on hold Issued RMA will send today. Guessing i wont see notebook or hard drive or data again. fortunately all is on server. wierd as i went thru troblbe shootign could here the windows sound but no screen or caps lock key light just power and disk activity light can turn on and off but no screen at any point
Update 2/22/2012 Got thru to ASUS support and got an RMA number not a horrible process prob took 30 minutes. Sent it today and turns out the repair service is local (cupertino) so hopefully they can swap the MB and get it back to me soon.
Update 2/24/2012 They have notebook, REpair status WB1 (waiting for parts) Dont suppose Ill see my notebbok for a LOOOOONG while....sigh.....stupid ASUS
Update 3/1/2012 Part arrived yesterday (assume it was a motherboard) and computer repaired. Got it back today and the sheet with it said they replaced motherboard AND LCD panel (?) based on condition they replaced the entire lid. booted up with original drive in it so didnt have to re-do everything (YAY ASUS!!!). Charging it now but it appears to reboot fine and function normally. Will report again after a couple weeks. Computer was WELL packaged and had protective sheets over everything upon return. Full marks to BIZCOM for speedy repair and excellent care
3/8/2012 Just update driver for HD3000 graphics and ran WEI got a score of 2.0 based on 3D graphics performance....!!!! downgraded drivers upgraded drivers no change still 2.0. My guess is the graphics driver on the new MB is some crippled version of the HD3000 graphics that originally caused the failure and this was the only way to fix the problem (graphics chip failed and kille display, new board has sh-t for capability graphics) Have logged a complaint with ASUS, IF I get no resolution I will ask for money back -
I remember now that I've had a couple of recover from "power button not functioning" problem a couple of times sometime ago. Those times I didn't pay much attention, but eventually my UX31 died.. If I were you, I'd backup every valuable data from my HDD and give it to repair service before the inevitable happens. Just my 2 cents.

Took almost three weeks for Asus to fix mine but I got it back yesterday and it seems to be running fine now.

hi guys,
figured I would post an update. After waiting for over 2 and a half weeks for my Zenbook te return from Asus repair (waiting on Motherboard from Taiwan just like most of you), my shop decided to give me a new zenbook! Opened the box, took off the plastic and found three large scratches on the top lid. Really bad, terrible Asus Quality Assurance. Managed to get it replaced and my zenbook is working perfectly now for two days.
I am wondering if this zenbook already has a new motherboard, or if this one will fail sometime in the future, it makes me really scared each morning...
Can we analyze motherboard serial numbers or something, or revision numbers? TO determine whether we have a new revision or an old one?
GOod luck guys -
I'm still waiting for new motherboard 2 weeks, and people from asus local service can't give me full time estimation for waitingI hope for fast result.
-
thanks did die as you predicted. all data on server, just the 2 months worth of settings and tweaking lost....sigh RMA issues and back to ASus it goes. from the best to the Worst computer ever in three days
-
Hi people,
I've just registered to say I've had the same problem as all of you. First booting problems and strange led behavior for, finally, see my zeenbook completely dead.
Last tuesday a guy took my laptop and now it's in th "waiting for stuff" state, I hope it won't last a month like somebody said...
Well, let's go to the point, have somebody experienced the same problems after a reparation? Will this problem be completely solved with the motherboard replacement or eventually, in future, we'll have the same issue?
Salut,
Albert -

I said to the service that I don't want an OS recovery or HDD re-format and my data were not damaged after the mainboard replacement. Maybe you may tell them the same thing.
I hope you all get your replacements as soon as possible.
Eren -
Thanks i gave them the same instructions but who knows...
-
Bad news,
I've just received an e-mail saying that they do not have mother_boards in stock and they don't know when the moderboards will arrive...
For the record, Despite I'm from Spain, my laptop is currently in Portugal. -
I too have had my UX31E turn into a brick. The worst part is the horrible customer service I'm going through with Asus Canada. Three different reps telling me three different variations to their warranty and what they are going to do for me or should I say not do for me. This is the first and last Asus product I buy not because of the device but the support and policies behind the products.
-
damn. sucks to be you guys.
I'm about to rma the seagate hard drive in my asus laptop. This is the first time i've ever had to rma anything.
sucks that asus does not pay shipping both ways -
My reparation status changed from Wainting for parts(3 days), Repairing (2 days) and now switched to Waiting for spare parts again.
Isn't that weird?
Aren't they suposed to just change de MotherBoard? -
UX31 with i7 and 256GB SanDisk died with same symptoms as OP. Will try to RMA. Really wishing that I would have bought another Dell instead.
-
I had the same problem... Yesterday, when I was going to charge my UX31, it ran out of battery... It was late, and I put it to charge and gone to sleep. This morning I just took it out of the power, trying to turn it on at night. For my sad surprise, it's power and caps lock leds worked, and nothing else... Many tries later, i found this forum, and was already desperate, I tried one last shot: with the ultrabook on, I pressed the power button for 24 seconds (4 seconds for the BIOS turn off, and then more 20 seconds, without releasing the button). When turning it on again, everything worked perfectly! I'm using it to answer the forum right now!
Good luck for you!
Best regards... -

Firstly, my laptop had these sympthoms too. Then, after a week, the UX31 completely died.
If I were you, i would do a backup of your hd just in case. -
Well,
finally my UX31 arrived back, let's hope the problem is definitely solved. -
well anyone who sent their laptop in for new MB should rerun WEI so they can experience the new 2.0 score due to 3d graphics performance. Apparently ASUS has an issue with the graphics processor killing the MB and the graphics display (both of mine were replaced) and so the solution was to cripple the graphics capability.
Before MB died WEI was 5.6-5.8 now it is 2.0 graphics processor fails randomly and restarts. looks like another RMA for this POS. Do yourself a favor and get a Toshiba portege graphics resolution is less but 6gb ram and backlit keys plus lighter weight is better plus no dongles for external display This one aint ready for prime time based on my experience
UPDATE: completely uninstalled HD 3000 drivers am running on VGA driver for windows at 1600x900 and it appears to at least be stable (not crashing the display as the HD 3000 driver was doing) this Im sure means crippled video performance (wont even RUN WEI now at all). So the problem is with the driver and possible the integrated graphics on the MB. IT will take another two weeks for them to answer email so I will be calling on monday to see if anything they are going to do -
My MB was replaced with a new one and I too noticed a degradation on graphics wei but not as much as you've had.. My wei for graphics is 5.1, and gaming graphics is 6.1.. So does it mean that I'll suffer from another MB problem?

Has anybody whose Zenbook had died and had MB replaced noticed static electricity gathering on metal parts before? Just a though. Had a lot of static on mine after a security check in the airport.
It's still in RMA and MB is being replaced. -
Mine is back from repair for about a month and working well, but yesterday Windows notified me that my Win7 is fake. sigh
-
Asus Benelux is saying that new motherboard will arrive end of March and that I will at best receive my notebook back in April. So much for good service. Definitely my first and last Asus product.

My bad experience with this piece of .
Bought a Zenbook UX21 on Feb, 14th and THREE DAYS!!! after it entered into, the described here, the "coma status"....no longer turned on for many days. Today, when already packing it to return to Amazon and get my refund I decided to the last try and incredible it tuned on. However, two hours later entered again in the coma status and it is there.
No more expectations.....I live in Brazil, and talking to ASUS customer center in US, they asked to send it to repair in US California. Why then they have a Global Warranty? My conclusion is that ASUS is not a serious company.....
Completely frustrated.... -
Strange issue today with my UX31. Earlier today I click on the touch pad and then my display turned off for no reason. I then hit the power button and the light turned on for a few seconds and then turned off. My display never turn on while hitting the power button. Hit the power button several more times and no display....I then thought my UX31 was dead. I plugged in the charger and then hit the power button and finally my display came back on.
An hour ago, it did it again. My UX31 was in sleep mode and I try waking it up by hitting the power button. The light on the power button will turn on for a few seconds and then turn off. Tried several more times by hitting the power button and nothing. I then plugged in the charge and it finally came out of sleep mode. This is a signl that my UX31 is about to die? -
my ux31 i7 died yest .... its just 2-3 months old. It was showing the low battery sign - so i closed the lid, walked to my charger, and plugged in the charger. As soon as i openen the lid, there was no sign of "wake up" - i thought it must have shut down fully, so tried the POWER button - and nothing. no lights, nothing. completely dead.
I noticed though that the light on the charger is green (usually its orange when its charging, and green when its fully charged). Something is/was funny. Its been 24 hours and the laptop still doesnt start.
So annoying, since i am overseas, and just started my holiday, where i could finish so much work.
I will have to wait till mid april till i get back to my country where i will have to send it to warranty. ARGH!
I cant beleive this is happening to so many ppl - they should do a RECALL on all laptops and find out whats causing this! -
stawned,
My laptop died while i wasn't in the country I bought the UX31 (the laptop is from france and it died in Spain).
As the warranty is world wide you can send your laptop to any Asus repairing service.
However, if you are not staying for too long in your current place, I would wait till you are back home. -

Got my UX31 back from Asus repaired. Earlier than expected. Seems to work so far. BIOS is 210 instead of 211 however. So maybe that was the culprit. Windows was reinstalled with all the Asus crap.
UPS in Netherlands is no different from TNT/PostNL so they just left the package at the neighbors. -
I'm actually suffering from this problem as well...("does not wake up from sleep")
It's rough though since I need my laptop since it has all my school files and I can't afford to send it in...really hoping someone comes out with a solution? Maybe an update to the BIOS etc? -
Hi all!
A friend of mine who bought this ultrabook experienced the same issue after two days he got it.
After calling ASUS Italy and opening the ticket, he had to send it to the italian repairing center. He received it back just two days ago, after 15 days from the shipment to the tech center (a long time was spent waiting for the spare parts).
He just emailed me that... UX31 is dead again! Yesterday night he suspended it (closing down the lid) and today there is no way to wake it up again, same synthoms of 20 days ago.
I am here to ask you:
- do you know if Asus would REPLACE the unit considering that it is replicating the same issue? He needs the laptop for his jobs and having to wait other 15 days for repairing is a problem
- is there anybody here who experienced the same issue also AFTER the motherboard replacement from Asus?
Thanks in advance.
Roberto -
so the problem exists after updating bios? which versions are buggy? newest is 211, is there any good reason of updating it to that version?
-
Now on my second UX31 as the first one was RMA'd and had the motherboard & LCD replaced. One month after the repaired one returned it powered itself off while using it and would not restart.
-
The difference is that I powered it off from windows Start menu. And some strange things I noticed the day before: when I connected my mobile to charge it, the mobile periodically (approx every minute) gave notifications: charger was unplugged... charger was plugged in .... and so on, like usb power disappeared periodically.
-
Hei guys!
I've just seen that the BIOS 212 has been already released (12-4).
Do you think it is ok to update from 211 to 212 if I had the wake-up problem and RMA service already fixed it? -
I'm experiencing the same issue as all of you since yesterday with some minor differences.
First > My current situation now is that 3 of the 4 leds of the machine are blinking every 3 seconds. The one that is no blinking is the Wifi (f2). Yesterday the situation was different, all the leds were on. I let the battery drain all night and today I started over, the pattern of light changed once I hitted the delete keyboard several times while turning on.
I live in Uruguay and the support service that I have closer is in another country (Buenos Aires - Argentine). To dissambly I just need a torx 5 screwdriver, what do you recommend, should I travel or buy a screwdriver and go for the battery and cmos disconnection? WOOW!!! After several hours it's turning on again on his own, without doing anything. With session completely recovered. What I should do now? Bios update? -
First thing I did > completely disable all suspention and hibernate from all the energy plans.
-
I had UX31EAS209 and now I'm updating to UX31EAS212...crossing fingers part!
-
It's doing the same thing multiple times...starting to be scared.
Now it just frezzed in rom verification 92% , what the hell!! Please don't play with me like this.
Ok, it's saying: error while flashing, do click to try again and exit to cancel. Going for cancel this time.
Ah, now I'm scared! After hitting exit to cancel I reopend the flash tool and it's saying that my current bios version is 212! This is crazy! -
had a close scare earlier on a UX21E. Tried power cycling it a few times, and it finally roared to life.
-
nvm, it's definately dead again. Just the caps lock blinks once, and the whole unit just shuts off. Total time of 4 seconds, lol
.
-
-
It's working again. What I did? I left the battery run out of energy again. After a while of charging I enter setup and then I hit load optimized defaults. After saving turned on.
Let hope next time I turn on and off again will work. I'll update soon.
-
-
I hope to resolve! -
It's dead again.
-
It's back again, the issue seems to be with the hibernate, I use it a lot. Will test for now on with out it.
UX31 Completely DEAD! Help.
