    Hello everyone,

I was hoping we could start a UX31 SSD Tips Thread to discuss SSD speeds and ways to improve these.

My UX31 i5 128GB SANDISK is having serious lag issues when I do too much at once. Music stutters when I open another window and I decided to run a disk benchmark. The following image is the outcome after a fresh reboot with no disk-intensive programs running:

Surely this is not normal? I'm running on a High Performance plan (Not powergear) and plugged into AC power. I have NOT done an OS reinstall, but will gladly do so as soon as someone tells me this improves things. Any driver changes someone could suggest to improve performance, BIOS changes? I'm running 209 BIOS.

    Best regards

Unfortunatley you are correct , the write speeds are all worse than my 1.5 year old intel SSD.. is this the exact model you have SanDisk Ultra® Solid State Drive ?

Write speeds are definitely problematic. 10 yr-old regular harddrive should give you better sequential write speeds.

Could it be because you have high usage on your drive (75%)? Some models have serious trouble due to the garbage collectors if they have high usage rates.

Can you retry the experiment after bringing down your usage around 40% (if possible)?

I think I will do a nice reinstall tomorrow and move most of my data to another computer. In fact, I don't remember having had such bad performance in the beginning (I've only had the device for 5 days).

I'll keep you updated and let you know.

Did a complete reinstall of Windows 7. I only installed crystaldiskmark . By the way, I only have 36 running processes after a reinstall! Before I had over 120!

    Here are the results:

    457.5 / 321.9 (!)
    257.0 / 21.26
    16.31 / 13.81
    29.29 / 8.243

Look at that sequential difference! Ramgen, my usage is now 13%.

Can someone explain if the differences are due to my reinstall (which installed different drivers perhaps), or due to the additional free space on the SSD - and if so, can you explain why? Are you saying I can't fill up my 128GB?

    Thanks!

The benefits are two-folds. 1- your previous installation was overloaded. One of the processes may be thrashing the SSD causing a speed drop. 120 processes for a win 7 is way too much. 2- SSDs work better if they have lots of empty space. It is not like the traditional HDDs. This is pretty much model dependent but it is advised not to exceed %50 utilization on a SSD to get the best performance.

Hmm, so I have a similar issue. I have the DH-72 (256GB model), which only comes with the SanDisk drive.

The SSD is horrible-- the machine often stutters and freezes (Win95/486-style), and I literally can't view photos on it because each ~3-4 MB photo takes 5-10 seconds to load in Windows Photo Viewer.

My two-year-old HP Envy 15 (with a first-gen Intel SSD) and year-old MacBook Air both blow away this machine in storage performance. I don't even care about transfer speeds- for me, the main point of an SSD is to make everyday tasks faster, and this feels like using a 4200 rpm HDD that randomly decides to spin down.

    Hello guys,
    Im new here.

All in all, would you recommend buying UX31 ?
I am about to purchase it brand new from another person for a good price and I'd like to know if those problems you've mentioned are easily solved or are critical to this model.

Another question: is 128Gb to 256 Gb SSD expansion economically and technically feasible ? What are your advices ?
