Hi guys, bit of a weird one.

I have the same power problem as everyone else where the trackpad plays up when charging on a wooden surface.. however my problem is a bit more serious.

When the battery is fairly low, like less than 25% and not plugged in it will randomly just turn itself off, it will then struggle to boot without turning itself off until the power supply is connected.

It tends to be more of a problem if the cpu is under load like watching a youtube video etc.

I can replace the battery for about £50, but I just wanted to check that this is most probably the cause before spending the cash?

Would really appreciate any advice as the warranty has now expired with Asus.

    Kind regards,
    Andy

Assuming the battery indicator is not giving you an inaccurate reading, let me ask real quick: does the computer do a cold shut down (instantly powers down, no fans spin)? Or does it go into hibernation, as is normal when the battery gets critically low?

Yes mate, just turns off instantly without going into hibernation.
Worth getting a new battery then?

Hmm, that's a tough call. It could be power management on a hardware level. If the laptop is under warranty, I think it's safer to send it in for RMA. That way, even if it is the battery, they'll swap it out and test. If not, then you save yourself the trouble of getting a new battery for no reason. I've heard of some grounding issues with the Asus ultrabooks, so perhaps this is an electrical failure on the board. :(

I respect ProStars opinion but I would look into power management first. While you have not clearly said if you are not watching "YouTube" vid's does this not happen? On my phone if below a certain batt level I can't youse the camera. All common sense I have zero actual informed comment on this but it does seem odd.

    Good luck.

Thanks ASUS-UX32VD! While that's all well and true, even with the right Power Management options in place, the system should not go into a cold shutdown; that's the facet that concerns me. Normally, the screen might dim, you would get a notification about the battery level, etc. first.

Try downloading a bootable Ubuntu ISO imagine and making a bootable USB drive. Boot into Ubuntu and try using your computer on 25% below battery power. If it works fine and doesn't turn itself off, then there is some sort of a problem with Windows software/drivers.

I would also try updating the BIOS (make sure battery at 100%, etc, etc).

If you still get the same behaviour, well then I think you need to replace the battery.
