    Hi

Is anyone else's UX31 making strange squeaking, buzzing and hissing sounds? High frequency sounds that are constantly changing, and seem to vary based on how busy the CPU is....?

I got the UX31 two days ago, updated the bios to 210, installed all the latest drivers, and got rid of the D: partition.

When the CPU is very busy (running Starcraft 2) there are no weird sounds. Otherwise the high frequency sounds are constantly going on and changing.

The sounds are coming from the middle of the ultrabook, around the middle bottom of the display - roughly where the speaker is. I don't believe its the speaker...

Thoughts? I'm baffled and don't know whether to send it back. Thanks.

Do you get the same hissing if you plug in headphones to disable the internal speakers?

It sounds like it might be CPU whine or similar, which can exist in varying degrees on any modern laptop. You might have a particularly loud board in which case you might want to send it in for a replacement.

Yep, I got some high pitch noise. Not sure what it was. I returned the laptop due to the inconsistent touchpad and lag (adata) and waiting to Asus to ship out a revised laptop. If not, I might just give Apple a shot.

Thanks for the suggestions. Pluging in earphones made no difference, nor did disabling the internal speakers, etc.

I'm after doing a recovery reinstall of the OS. That made no difference (just in case it was a driver issue).

What does make a difference is two things:
    1. The volume of the noise changes when the laptop is running on the battery, the noise becomes far more pronounced.

    2. When I turn off the display, the noise stops completely.

So it seems like its a display issue....? I've never had a laptop display behave like that before, time to contact Asus I think?

    Hi :)

I got 2 ux31 (bought one then exchanged it) and both were hissing. Other people have reported this annoying sound. It is as you said the screen (probably a condensator used to reduce power to lower the backlight intensity).
Some tv are hissing/buzzing too, this is common but in case of a pc it is, for sure, disturbing.
I am quite sure that all of the ux31 have this problem...

Setting the brightness to 3 did help a bit for me.

I've seen a few reports of sound issues, but the audio from my UX31 seems perfect. It's probably a hardware defect, not software. I'd say send it back.

Thanks all - I'm after doing more tests. I booted the laptop off a USB key with Ubuntu Linux on it. The sounds aren't as bad, but the screen sound is still there and is really bad when running on the battery. Its not usable.

I've contacted the Asus helpdesk, haven't heard back. As much as I like the laptop I'm prob sending it back to Amazon.

Is it worth trying another UX31 or should I just buy a Macbook Air?
