I'm starting grad school soon and want to grab an ultrabook that will hopefully last my entire 3 year program. Can anyone lend advice on choosing between the UX31A-DH71 and the UX32VD-DH71? Online retailers seem to put the final prices pretty comparable once I upgrade the 32VD to a SSD. So, other than the dedicated graphics and possible RAM upgrade (and one online retailer will upgrade the RAM to 10GB for free) on the 32VD, is there any other differences I should be aware of?

I'm also curious whether the 32VD's dedicated graphics shortens the battery life compared to the 31A if anyone knows.

    Thanks in advance.

You can turn off the nvidia card, and it will use intel hd 4000 when you don't want to use nvidia for gaming. Also the UX32VD is i7, and i7 uses more energy compared to i5.

Thanks for the info about the video card. That UX31 also has an i7 (though I know I could get the DH51 with an i5).

So is there any advantage/disadvantage to getting either of the ones I mentioned?

The UX32VD body is not like a unibody I believe, it has some flex to it.

What about either of these for "future-proofing"? Is either better?

What do you mean by future proofing? Which will last longer?

Most ultrabooks are pretty fixed pieces of hardware so what they are is how they will stay.

Yea, which will last longer. As in which would be better to buy now so that it would reasonably keep up with requirements in the future.

I just saw the UX31A Touch at best buy today. It looks really nice. I'm nearly ready to purchase it. My final questions are these:

    1. Do I need more than 4GB (compared to the 10GB in the UX32VD) if the machine has a SSD? Especially considering I won't be doing any heavy gaming or video editing, etc.

    2. Similarly, will I really notice any difference between the i5 or i7 in either system?
