I have been using a UX32VD for some time and apart from the usual issues (completely idiotic setup of fan threshold temperatures causing the fan to start/stop all the time etc.) I am, overall, more or less happy with the device. One thing, however, drives me up the wall: display brightness tends to drop from time to time for no apparent reason and then -- a few minutes later -- it returns to the previous state.

Please do not advise me to turn off the ambient light sensor because I want display brightness to be changed automatically according to the actual lighting conditions. I just do not understand why sometimes, all of a sudden, the display backlight intensity decreases even though nothing has changed in terms of lighting conditions in the room I am sitting in (no shadow, no sudden drop in sunlight intensity, no object placed in front of the sensor). Then, a few minutes later, backlight intensity returns to the previous level -- again for no apparent reason.

Has anyone been experiencing this? Has anyone found a solution to this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I understand that no device is perfect but the problems encountered with UX32VD suggest that this product was either rushed to market or that ASUS simply did not care enough to make a product that people would love. :(

Sadly, this is probably per the ambient light sensor. The ISO of the sensor is far from perfect. Phones sometimes have a tendency to reflect the same idiosyncrasy when placed on an "automatic brightness" setting. Fluctuating lighting conditions or not, disable the ambient light sensing feature and test for the problem. If it problem persists, then we can rule that out and you can re-enable it. If not, you have a decision to make as to whether to put up with intermittent brightness adjustment or leave the feature disabled.

    Prostar Computer,

Thanks for the suggestion -- it really seems to be caused by the poor-quality ambient light sensor.

So the choice is either no automatic backlight adjustement (conflicts with what ASUS promises the customers for their money) or strangely behaving backlight (I am pretty sure that many people find this annoying, not just me). Hmm, thanks ASUS for such a wonderful user experience... :/

Anyway, since there is nothing one can do to get rid of the issue, I am marking this thread as solved.

I realize it's not what you wanted proposed as a fix. Hopefully future software and/or hardware updates make better use of this feature. Until then, I'm glad you are, at least, "more or less happy" with the product. Asus does make good quality systems.
