    Hey guys,

I'm thinking about change the hard disk of my ux32vd-dh71 from the original 500+24GB SSD to some 500GB/512GB SSD, has anyone done it before? Does switching to a SSD boost the performance a lot?
Also, can anyone give good suggestions on the SSD?

    Thanks!

In no order Samsung, Intel or Crucial. How much do you want to spend to spend to speed up loading of all your programs? Also are you happy with you cold boot time with the stock drive?

    Hey mate,

You can not imagine what a difference SSD makes!! I have UX32VD-R3001V (i5 proc., 4 gb ram, GT620M). The original HITACHI hdd is so slow - especially write speed. With all the bloatware installed (120 processes out of the box?!?!!!), all I could hear was HDD scratching and no real performance. So, I did a neat clean install on the internal i100 32GB SSD.

Boot comparison --- HDD vs. SSD:
Hitachi shutdown (original, w/ bloatware): ~20 sec.
    SSD shutdown: <10 sec.
    Hitachi Win-7 start-up: ~1 min !!
    SSD start-up: ~17 sec !!

Not to mention that any program now opens at the press of a button! Before - this brand new powerhorse laptop was so totally bottlenecked by the HDD that its overall performance was at the level of my 7 year old single-core Pentium-M laptop.

Looking at Samsung 830/Crucial M4, budget is around $400. Which one is better? Are there any other options? Thanks!

Hi thanks for the input! Did you do a clean reinstall? Is there anything we need to do with the 24GB SSD came along with the machine?

Here is a quick overview (you may especially appreciate the included Velociraptor drive to give you an idea of the performance gap between platter drives and SSDs): AnandTech - Bench - SSD

Here is the Samsung 830 and the Crucial M4 side-by-side (since m4 scored high in their benchmarks, and since Samsung was omitted in that first link): AnandTech - Bench - SSD

    Happy hunting. :)

If you want a dual setup, the SSD will have to be mSATA.

I'm glad! Any thoughts yet on what SSD you've got your eye on?

Well I just bought a Samsung 830 today and plan to replace my 500g HHD with it and do a clean install, would it be a problem? What's a dual setup? Not familiar with that term, thanks!

I am constantly hearing the scratching of the 500GB Hitachi Hard drive, even when I am just surfing the web. Is this constant scratching sound normal? It is fairly loud! In addition, I am hearing the fan come on fairly often, even when I am using only 5% of the CPU! Are these sounds, noises, and problems to be expected? Or do I have a defective notebook? Please advise.
