I started this thread and its quite interesting where its being pulled.
My video problems were with DirectX, as noted in my earlier posting and the way the HD was prepped at the factory.
Just for the record, once I reformatted my HD to NTSF with 1 partition, adjusted the settings for Power4 gear and dumbed down the settings on the ATI card, all my problems with heat and video disappeared during my presentations. It did'nt help that I also have 2 Gb of memory on the system, but since I update my system regularly, the hibernate problem with XP was taken care of. Thanks very much to the person who was kind enough to post this link on this thread.
I game with my son on weekends and reset the system to its optimal configuration, sometimes the Asus is running for 12-14 hours - no problems. My son also plays some demanding games on this system, and the system responds very well.
One last helpful hint to other owners, my bios was updated automatically a few weeks ago using the ASUS live update, which worked really well
In the 40 or so workshops I have run since reformatting the HD etc., none of the problems have resurfaced - the system is very stable. So contrary to some opinions, the machine is excellent for business AND for gaming.
To me, this thread should be closed, it has served its purpose. After a lot of effort and some very helpful contributions, I figured out the problems and solved them. I posted my results online in this forum to help others. Thanks to all who helped me out with some very good clues. Some late posters have focused on their perceptions of Asus, I dont find this particularly helpful for someone simply trying to get their machine to work properly. When someone insists on their credentials, I tend to doubt them as it is usually followed by an opinion and very little actual help. -
Hello,
I am curious to know the relation between having multiple partitions and the video issues you described earlier. I mean, why does the system destabilize if there are multiple partitions c: d: e: f: ?
Also, what would be the exact settings to adjust Power4 gear and dumb down the settings on the ATI card..? Is it OK to uninstall and get rid of power4gear alltogether?
Thanks -
Please see message 41 in this thread for a complete explanation of why I reformatted the HD - the problem was with Direct X which was corrupted and causing me video problems. I spent several hours with a tech to try and solve this but ended up having to reformat as I could not completely remove Direct X from the system. I converted to NTSF as its supposed to be more stable and it seems to work very well with the other machines on my network. The reformatting and going to 1 partition seems toa have solved all of my problems except for the video playback which is a hardware issue (see a couple of paragraphs below).
Power 4 works just fine, go into the configuration to reset to your own needs. The Power 4 works with the keys on the side of your notebook - it does not seem to cause me anymore problems. I would keep it myself since its handy.
The hibernate issue was with XP and the 2 GB of memory. Updating XP solves this problem.
I dumb down the ATI card to about 2/5 on the hardware acceleration scale in order to play embedded videos in my powerpoint files and also to be able to see the video on both my laptop and on the projector. Right click on your desktop; choose properties; advanced; troubleshoot; you will come then to a screen where you can set your hardware accelerator lower. I ramp up the accelerator to max when gaming with Oblivion for example.
Good luck -
Hello,
Would there be issues if you had multiple partitions such as c: d: e: etc..? I am not sure, but both your posts seem to suggest that the system will be unstable if there would be multiple partitions instead of one.
I am trying to figure out if it is OK to repartition and split the drive into multiple partitions ..
Thanks for the info
Uh oh - W3J heat problems? Now video problems?
