Aren't you all glad you're holding out for the UL30Vt?
Here's dells offering of the inspiron 13z:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Inspiron-13z-Notebook.22081.0.html
Ok specs but *terrible* battery design. It would have been far nicer if it protruded from the back, rather than angle the entire device. Add that to the fact that it's *lower* capacity than the one that would be found in the UL30Vt! And even with the bigger battery, this machine can only sqeak out 7 hours in idle. Under load? 3.5 hours.... ouch!
The UL30Vt should do 7 hours under load *with* turbo enabled, and 10-12h idle. It just about doubles the life of the inspiron 13z while providing better performance, and a thinner, sleeker package.
This makes me want the UL30Vt even more!

Here's a compelling reasons for wanting discreet graphics for something other than gaming:
Nvidias Cuda accelerates video encoding:

Of course this is using a monster of a video card, but any improvement is good improvement eh? I'd like to see how a solution like this fares on lower powered cards (like the G210M).

Any chance this is coming out in Nov?

The UL30Vt bios is available from the Asus support site, as well as a listing of the UL30Vt in the vip forums. This is a pretty good indication that at some level, the UL30Vt has been planeed by Asus.
}:^)~ -
It is coming, and likely available to order online in early-mid December. -
it will increase their income dramatically....
and one more thing why they buy ul30a while there is levono U350?
just because of battery????? just wondering -
-
well as long as i get my old DV4000 fixed i can wait for that... -
Really excited for the UL30Vt, before, I had a hard time deciding between the UL30A-A2/X5 and the UL80VT-A1. The UL30a is light w/ no dedicated graphics card while the UL80VT has a dedicated graphics card, but it's more heavy and it includes an optical drive that I won't ever use. With the UL30VT, I won't have to decide anymore, it has exactly what I wanted.
-
I am debating between UL80vt and UL30vt
Ul80vt Pros:
Available now
Bigger Screen is nice
DVD drive may come in handy to install clean OS. Occasional use of it.
UL30vt Pros
Smaller and less weight
Less weight because there is no dvd drive.
A bit more portable comparing to Ul80. Replacement for my macbook pro 13
Bluetooth
Cons: No one knows when it will be avaialble -
damn it....im about to giving it up... i just find that this computer has speakers on lap fairing....i thought this one has speaker in right under the screen....speaker is very important to me...so i guess im gonna wait till next January for MBP13" see if they changes the graphic card if not i guess
envy13? i dont know this speaker thing got me real bad... i need more research now... -

Why don't you try to find a UL30a that you can test? The UL30Vt will pretty much be a replica of that device with the added benefit of turbo and discreet graphics. If you like the UL30a, you'll like the UL30Vt. If you don't, get the MBP. Full stop.

So here's the question I'd like to pose. I was minutes away from purchasing a UL3OA-A2 when I started reading about the UL30VT. Hours passed, and I finally had to close my dying laptop and chew on it for a while.
It seems to my that for my purposes (web surfing, MS Office, Multitasking, but no gaming, very little multimedia, and no video editing) that the UL30A-A2 will suffice. However, I'm tempted to wait for the UL30VT due to the improved specs, especially being that we are moving to more and more streaming video and I'd like this laptop to be useful in 3-4 years. I love everything about the model, though am a bit worried about the comments on the wireless connectivity and the scroll pad, the latter of which I'm sure I can overcome.
Please let me know your thoughts on whether it would be worth the wait with the future in mind. Thank you. -
Personally I think you'll be fine...but if you're already waiting, another month to see...at least see the price point might be ok -

Is the UL50Vt available already?
http://www.shopbot.ca/pp-asus-ul50vt-a1-asus-price-207086.html
It would seem that a number of canadian retailers are already showing availability in stock. This is very tempting, but I'd *love* the 13.3" form-factor. Is the UL30Vt far behind?
}:^)~ -
you all my want to get this then. I got one when i got my eee pc

That's a nice looking DVD RW! It also looks quite portable!
}:^)~ -
I use it all the time now as its so easy to use. Works great also and its very small. Man I was going to order the U80vt but now im going to wati for the U30vt now.

I'll likely get this DVDRW. It uses two USB ports for power right?
In any case, if it works with an Eee, it should work no problem with a UL30Vt.
Yeah, I'm in love with the UL30Vt even though it doesn't exists (yet). The decrease in size and weight over the UL50Vt/UL80Vt is the primary reason why I'd choose it over either of these machines. I just hope it comes to market soon!

OMG!
I just got the logitech V450 mouse with the nano dongle, and tossed my bluetooth mouse to the curb. This mouse is like sliding heaven across a surface. I LOVE IT!
With the 2 AA's it's got the perfect amount of weight (not too light, but not too heavy). From what I hear, the batteries should last a good deal longer than that sorry excuse for a bluetooth mouse that I had. It performs noticably better as well.
I can't wait to use it with the UL30Vt.
After having bad performance with a bluetooth headset, and hearing things about bluetooth headphones, I don't think there's a single reason I'd require BT to be built into my laptop. I'd even prefer transferring files to/from a mobile using a USB cable as bluetooth is SLOW. What else is there?

Anyone care to compare the pending UL30vt to the HP DM3T (with discrete video option)? I just got the HP after ordering it before the UL30vt was announced. I love everything about it HP, except the trackpad isn't great. The looks are awesome but I can't compare the battery life or speed yet...
-
The DM3 is a pretty good unit, however, perhaps look into it's more 'elite' twin, the 5310M, if you're looking for an alternative.
-
I was thinking about getting the UL30VT but unless Asus fixes the wireless issues they are already having with the Ul30a it isn't going to be an option for me..........
-
I love the looks of the 5310m but I could really use some discrete graphics...mostly for video.
what ul30a wireless problems? -
also have we figured out if the ul30vt comes with the big 8 cell battery or the smaller one?
-
-
-
I have a feeling the ul30vt will have the better intel 5100 since it also comes with bluetooth and those two seem to pair up. Also has gigabit ethernet been mentioned?
Intel 5100 + BT + gigabit ethernet FTW? -
It is fast enough for youtube, it is only bandwidth limited and i did not have to get a second 3G contract for my laptop.
It would be absolutely awkward to have to juggle with USB-cable connected devices while on the train, changing busses, etc.
I would never ever get a laptop without bluetooth. Nor one with less than 3 USB ports (external mouse, external keyboard, HDD or DVD). -
Capt'n Corrupt Notebook Evangelist
That *is* a good use-case for BT. I suppose I've never tethered, but would like the feature if it were available.
Would a mini BT dongle suffice? Is it possible to replace the network card in the device to something that includes bluetooth? But I can understand the frustration of needing these additional steps if you truly desire BT connectivity.

Does anyone know what WiFi card is in the UL30 series? If installing a WiFi/BT combo card, do you think the battery life would suffer?
Although I don't use the BT tether case, it is a good point, and I may want to install a WiFi/BT card at some point. Of course, I'm more than happy to use a $4 mini-dongle in the short term, but between this and my mouse, it leaves one USB slot open (which is ok, though at a point it may become a little too constrained).
Anyone know?
}:^)~ -
On similar note, the Asus UL30 should have a small compartment where an internal bluetooth module can be installed. I know the UL30's in Taiwan have built-in BT, so I'm assuming Asus simply added the BT module for Taiwan's market. -
