I'm intalling some programs right now and the noise from the DVD ROM drive is so unGodly loud its scary. YOu can literally hear it from 8 ft away. I just had someone walk into the room and say "what the h*ll is that noise?". It seems that the only way I can get that noise/vibration/hum is to push on the ROM drive from beneath the laptop. Once I do that it's very silent. Any ideas how I can fix this? Fortunately I haven't had this problem when gaming. Only when I seem to install software.

    Thanks

The optical drive on the G1s is very loud on startup when inserting a CD/DVD... Otherwise, it should sound like any other drive when in use.

    1. Maybe unbalanced disk (e.g., uneven label on the CD)
    2. Maybe add some padding below the ODD if you can stop if from vibrating if you push from below.

Take care not to disturb the airflow through the computer, however!

But in general G1S drives are quite noisy, there have been many complaints.

Yeah it was so annoying and quite embarassing when people walked in. Laptops should sound like that. Hopefully it was the CD/DVD itself as like I mentioned, I don't hear it when gaming or using some other SW.

    Thanks

It sounds like the drive wasn't installed properly and is a bit loose in the computer, causing all that rattling and noise, thats why when you push on it, the noise goes away significantly.

bring a camera and record the video so we can help out :D. sometimes drive is defective could cause that noise and i guess it's because of the laser eye move back and forth .

Either that or vibration due to rotation (more likely in my opinion).

There's not much that can go wrong with mounting an ODD, one or two screws at most... If you tighten them and it still happens it's a "feature" of the machine. Or the ODD itself is faulty.
