my issue is that all 3d apps run slower than they should

crysis only runs between 15-25 FPS at 800x600 LOW detail
i got 3148 3D marks (06),yet the one in the review got 3816

i have the lastest video driver from Asus website (8600m GT)
    i have latest DX9, DX10

    what else can i check/install/update??

Your problem is that you are using the latest Asus drivers. I have a G2S, identical to the G1S except a bigger screen. It is nearly universally accepted that the drivers need to be updated. Go to laptopvideo2go.com and check around. Below I have posted a link to the 177.66 drivers and modified inf, this is one of the best drivers I have tested...out of nearly 15 different drivers this year alone. Boot into safe mode, uninstall the current drivers, install these and accept them even if you get a warning, use the modified inf with them so they will work properly and your score will probably be near 4k on 3dmark. If you have any questions, post back and I can go into more detail about how to get the new drivers ready and installed, or read the FAQ and laptopvideo2go.com. Good luck!

    Edit:
Also, I would say running CCleaner and a defrag of the hard drive will also speed up. I use Defraggler, but both CC and Def can be found at http://www.filehippo.com

Hey, we are a community. Good luck! O, one thing I should have mentioned, well two now that I think about it: set a clean restore point (boot up, set it, shutdown) before you start messing with this stuff and make sure that any (key, vital, life altering) files you want to save are backed up onto a separate device.

@ Powerpack: Do you mean, has he run them initially? If so, then he referred to his score in his post.

    ok, thanks for the advice

i have all the files i need ready to go, just waiting for far cry 2 to finish DLing on steam lol

i will run 3dmark again and post new results when all done

by the way, i read around the laptopvideo2go.com forum and decided to get the latest driver avaliable, it has been up for a while now and performs slightly better than the other one.
of course if it fails miserably i will take your advise on the older version

    thanks again :)

    wow, 4229 3dmark06
    cheers

long story, my battery fell out while shutting down after installing the new drivers.. i couldnt boot and had to put the HD in a desktop to recover some stuff and fresh install vista.

after fresh install of vista, i installed the latest driver from laptopvideo2go.com, ran 3dmark 06 and scored 4229
please note that this was with only 3GB of ram being recognised (no SP1)

thanks a lot, i owe you one :)

I am using the latest driver from Asus which is 175.6X I think....honestly I have no problem at all for my G1s. I can play Far Cry 2 and the demo of Tomb Raider Underworld just fine. The reason I am keeping this driver is because Asus G1s is "well-known" to be problematic with any driver above 175.xx (e.g. 176, 177, and so on...). If you use 176 and above on G1s then the "sleep mode" trick will not work anymore to fix the stuttering issue. I confirmed this already ....well or at least it seems to behave that way on my G1s.

@strider: please specify the trick with the stuttering... (how much is your score on 3Dmark with that driver?)

With the latest stock driver that I downloaded from Asus website (175.64) I received 4000+ the last time I run 3D Mark 06 if I am not mistaken....

Anything above 175.xx (176 and above) will render the sleep mode trick (that people normally use to fix the stuttering issue) useless.

Yes... I know it kinda stinks to stuck on 175.xx because basically I am missing all the goodies including the PhysX acceleration that comes from the recent drivers. Thankfully I can still run the latest games just fine.

    Okay....
What the sleep mode trick does (for G1s) is increasing the built-in temperature threshold on the GPU driver to the maximum value that is still allowable.

Some Asus G1s come with a defective 8600m GT that make it more vulnerable to temperature change, especially higher temperature. From what I heard so far, this is caused by the type of lead that the manufacturer (which is NVIDIA) used to solder the GPU onto the motherboard. Combined with G1s reputation for bad cooling, games might become unplayable once the temperature of the GPU reaches 95 or 96 degree celcius because NVIDA's built in powermizer will automatically reduce the clock of the GPU to cool it down.

Once the clock is decreased then the framerate will decrease as well. I think Irathi opened up a topic about this a while ago. This is where the sleep mode trick comes into play. If the GPU starts to slow down at 95-96 C, then by making your Asus G1s go to sleep mode and turn it back on again will increase the temperature limit to 120 C I believe.

Some users might be alarmed because of this method might cause over-heating. I have been using this method for a year now and I found no problem at all. The highest temperature that I have received so far is 98 C. Just make sure that the room is always in nice temperature and use a laptop cooler.

sounds cool! thx a lot for the info. How does it come in fact that it takes around a year to detect the bad gpu's and in what way comes this lead into play? :)

Lol... I knew about this from the very beginning, I just want to share with everybody that they shouldn't be worried too much about overheating because the GPU is basically "engineered" to take that kind of beating (keep in mind that just because it is engineered doesn't mean that you can abuse it to extreme overclocking). Just make sure that the room is cool enough and put a laptop cooler underneath the G1s and it should be ok.

I only stutter with stock drivers. The 177.66 is by far the best driver out there at the moment. It has powermizer turned on, allows my laptop to go to sleep, etc. If you are receiving temps of 95C or above without OC, you have an issue, drivers, sleep mode, etc. is NOT the fix. At 120C you are destroying your card. You will not see it now, but artifact will occur later on. Both the G1S and G2S have awful cooling, idle temps are in the high 60's for most. As for the other "improvements" you mention with Asus' stock drivers, I have noticed no difference. I literally went from 50fps on average to 95 fps on average in HL2 and source mods. That is ridiculous. My cooling sticks to 90C or so, with a cooling pad i am down at 82C, even when I moderately overclock. My 3DMark Score went up by hundreds of points by changing drivers alone. The above has worked for me, so I put it out there as an alternative for those who wants some help.

I just OC'd mine, i have drivers 180.43, slowly worked upwards and benchmarking. i eventually got 5075 marks in 3D06
that was with the core @650 and the memory @1000

i had icepacks on the thing to keep from frying it

i was getting 3148 marks with the ASUS drivers, that jumped to 4229 with the 180.43, then with OC @650, 1000 it went to 5075

    i love my ASUS

does anyone konw the physical location of the GPU in the case? i couldnt be screwed to dig around but i want to know where exactly to place my freezerpacks.
    cheers

gengerald you say you use 177.66 and it is the best driver out there. Will it still be the best even though I am running windows XP and you are running vista? I will get the XP drivers of course. THANK YOU.

It is one of the better drivers I have personally tested. The best driver is the one you find to be for your setup. It should function similarly, but give it a try. It has the correct balance of power and additional options that are disabled or did not work in other drivers I have tried. Make sure to use the modified inf. Good luck and make restore point before starting.

yep, got to about 100, just under.. no stuttering

that was only OCing the GPU
im afraid i may have fried it, now whenever i OC it, i get tearing and have to reboot

dont OC as high as I did!

OCing the FSB gives awesome results, my CPU went from 2.2, to 2.6 GHz and boosted from 4229 to 4884 marks

Congrats Hai and Posty. Hey, a little change up cane make a difference. Hai, truthfully, I have not tested my OC settings. I should take some time and get them set and such. I always use my cooling bad when I game HL2 or above (in terms of GPU demand) and I will sometimes oc 10%-15%. Each GPU is different and I have kept my clocks very low out of a lack of knowledge. I will be doing some of this testing soon, so I will post up with what results. I am going to be calling Asus and ruffling some feathers. [Rant Alert] Getting a bit sick of lugging around the extra cooler and always having the laptop elevated when gaming, so I will push for a replacement as they have already taken a look at it. As a student it is an important piece of some school work and all of my business work, so maybe I can trade them a CC number. Not sure how it will work out, but that's for another day. Cheers.
