Over the last few times ive popped in my windows XP pro CD and ran setup off it, Ive noticed that my ASUS notebook, by factory default has 3 partitions

    1) Inactive, Boot manager partition
    2) Active C: drive
    3) Active D: drive

Why is that? What purpose is the boot manager? to manage boot? Would that mean that the computer reads THAT partition to look for boot information?

If that's correct, What are the implications of installing Vista overtop the XP installation, if it doesn't know to write to an active partition?
