    Hi everybody.

I bought an 256Gb SSD drive for my n550jv laptop and I don't want to waste the original 1Tb HDD. For that reason I was thinking of putting it in the DVD drive place (practically I don't use DVDs nowadays). The thing is that here in Argentina I can only get an universal caddy instead of one specific for my laptop. I think it will work fine, but I doubt I'll be able to put the front plastic cover of de DVD tray again in the caddy (the one with the open button) and a hole would stay on the side.

I have to buy it online, so I can't see the product to check this. And the seller has no idea.

If somebody did it with an universal caddy I appreciate to tell me how it result. Otherwise, the other option is to buy the specific one on ebay, but delivery times are usually very long... and honestly I'm not really sure if I can put again the front cover in this case either :/

There is a removable cover on notebook dvd drive that you place on a universal caddy. Fits like a glove. Did this many times on various laptops. Worked every time. Hardest part is taking off the cover from dvd drive without breaking latches. And if you take it slow its not hard at all.

A universal should work fine: Asus N550 N550JV HDD Caddy - add an extra HDD or SSD into your laptop!

Uhm, thanks for the warning... The product seems to be one labeled "Protronix Second HDD Caddy":

Unfortunately even the included optical drive sticks out ever so slightly, but it's really only noticeable from the bottom of the laptop. This seems due to the chassis design (the body slopes at the bottom case and the drive isn't contoured to the design).
