So I got it to boot off a USB stick... but now I have a problem. The .txt file with it says that if no commands are given when wdupd020.exe is run, then it'll automatically scan for devices. So I let it run and after a while it says that no devices (hard drives) are found! It says controller might not be compatible. Can anyone get this update to work?! (If the version on the hard drive is newer, it'll still show the device and state it after you choose that drive to update... so that's not the problem here)

I have an M50VM-B1.. posted twice in the main m50vm threads but no one responds to them.

In your bios do you have a option to enable compatible mode? If so try that.

Is this a firmware update? I don't have experience with those. So except making sure that you use the proper utility for your particular type of hard drive, I don't know what to advise...

You could try investigating the command switches of that EXE file (usually {exefilename} /? or {exefilename} --help).

Actually how exactly are you booting from the USB drive? Are you loading the sata controller drivers etc?

Actually yeah thanks a lot! That turned out to be the reason... the hard drive compatibility was at Enhanced and I had to turn it to Compatible.

Used the HP usb boot tool, using the three files I downloaded that are created when you format a floppy disk to be a boot disk. Then I just put the update files onto the USB.
