Nice work. Which drive did you use? (Panasonic from Proportable, I assume?)

    How long did it take?

...and more importantly, does it work??

    ;)

    Congrats,
    -M.

The one listed on Proportable is DVD-RW only. My firend who is in HongKong help me to order and ship to me.
The upgrade is kind of easy, took me less than 10 mins. And all work fine for sure.. =)

It is same as the DVD+/- RW on Sony Vaio TR and S. You can order it from Sony and some laptop part wharehouse ~$450-$600. Or I can order it from HongKong for you for US$350. Please allow 1-2weeks for shipping.

What's the model number? It has to be a panasonic drive because no one else makes the drives for those slots....... but if you can provide the model number we'll know if this is fact or fiction..... Pansonic is close to releasing an 8x dual layer 9.5mm drive in the US...... unless this is the drive you're talking about, it doesn't pay to import a drive for $350 that just add's "+" ....

The UJ-822 is the same drive used in the V6v which is what we use for anyone wanting to upgrade a Z33a or W5a (anyone with a V6v or a bought one of these drives from us could verify that in a snap).... and some people though $170 for that drive was expensive because it's only a 2x -RW???

And you'll import it for $350? Street price is $450-600? Come on dude....... if you imported it for that, you got totally ripped off. Then again, if you're just trying to get people to buy them and plan on ripping them off..... then you've got another thing coming.

Below is a picture I have on file from the packets the V6v drives come to us in..... model numbers and all the details you need to prove what it is:

At the first time, I did thing v6V is using UJ-812 as it is -RW only.. I got the UJ-822 this for $330 from HongKong and I think it is the the reasonable price as Sony's price is $450 in U.S.....

UJ-822 is what the V6v has come with for the past 6 months now..... and in turn the drive we offer as an upgrade to the Z33a and the W5a.

The UJ-812 is the slim 2x dvd burner that used to come on the older M5n/np in Asia last year......

I mean looking at the specs it certainly seems that the 822 is both "+/-" while the 812 is just "-", but frankly I couldn't tell you because I've never burned a "+R" disc in my life...... I pulled an off the shelf V6v today and indeed the UJ-822 was in that as well....... but from us those drives are $170 and since Sony sells the same one for $450 or so.... I think our's just went up! ;)

I can confirm that it is a +/-. I have the T250 Vaio with the same Mash*ta (i.e., Panasonic) uj822Da drive and have burned numerous DVD+r discs. I have not, however, tried dvd-r discs. The newer Sony T350 already has a dual layer +/- drive in it and I assume it is also a superslim Panasonic. Next week Sony is releasing another new T also with a dual layer +/- drive in it as well. And 170$ is a great price. You could tap all of the Sony TR owners looking to upgrade there cdrw/dvd to dvdr+/- over at TR world. In the past they have paid much more for upgades via ebay (but less than 350$).

    Cheers.

I stand corrected (I looked it up at TR World). Seems the ebay price was 135$ for the 822 +/- . The new UJ-832S supports DL and 4x for DVD+R. Price unsure, but have heard 400$ was retail.

I don't know if the drive that I got from Justin was the 812 or 822, but mine burns +R's just fine. It never occured to me that there were ones that couldn't do them...

Jean - your's is the 822 because that's all we've had in at least 6 months.... but if it doesn't +R's I guess I'll have our guys try it and update the site.
