So i recently purchased a g51 to replace my quite outdated alienware m9700. I liked the fact that it is a little smaller than my 9700, so this makes it nicer to travel with, so i decided against the g71.

Now, ive been seeing people say the processor is upgradeable, is it worth the cost? I've found these 2 on newegg, but not completely sure if they are what i am looking for.

Ive built a number of desktops, but never dabbled inside a laptop for fear of breaking something fragile lol.

    and

    2.53

im guessing the cost difference between the 2.5 and the 2.6 cant be worth it, is it?

I mainly play WoW, which is hugely dependant on the CPU, and not so much the video card. Are these even compatable?

    Thanks for any help!

If ur gonna upgrade then, don't buy the P8xx series. Better to upgrade to a P9xx series, or T9800 (and faster) [due to bigger cache].
If u have money then its best to get the P9700, if not T9800 can be bought for a nice price.
You can get CPU's off Ebay, they are cheaper there.

Isnt the P7350 enough? U know u have the option to OC it.

well like i was saying i have only played WoW on it so far, but when im out in the world it runs great. Its when i get into combat in a 25 man raid that i need to run it at minimum settings to keep from locking up and booting me out entirely. Even at minimum it can be fairly choppy at times.
I have tried OCing from 2.0 to 2.1 and thats honestly all i feel safe doing at the moment lol. I used the guide in this forum about optimizing and the same programs that were used.

My temps are hitting a maximum of 67 degrees but normally they are about 65.

Im not familiar with modding laptops so i really dont know if that is too hot or what is too hot. What i used to do with my alienware was remove the bottom cover when i was playing, and then put it back on when i needed to move/travel with it, and that seemed to help quite a bit. Its just that the asus has about 9 screws holding it on and would be more cumbersome than it is worth.

Also, quick question, i had the cover off the other day, and noticed where there is what seems to be a large round intake area for the fan, but on the inside of the plate, it has a thin piece of plastic glued down blocking it. Why?

Would it get better airflow if i took that off?

EDIT: WOW! i just checked out those 2 CPUs u posted, 2.8 and 2.9! That would be a huge improvement. What about heat? (or am i just more worried about temp than i need to be haha).

EDIT: also, i have the BB model...apparently theres a difference.

a3r0x suggestion are very good, i think your best bet is trying to get a P9700, but hard to get in retail, its almost only in ebay.

My main playing game and reason i bought the laptop is WOW. I upgrade to T9600 and it idle lower than the stock one (around 30C on a 25C ambient), i play with all setting max out except shadows, and the game runs great both indoors and 25man raids. Highest temp on the T9600 i seen on it while playing wow is 58C.

It looks like a vent but its not. It has plastic on the back. I'm planing on moding it soon but spare parts haven't arrive yet. In the mean time check the following threads, Grab copper and a drill, now! and ASUS Cooling mod.

    thanks for the info!

that t9600 u have looks good too. Now is this just as simple to change out as a desktop? Just take out the heatsink setup and drop the new CPU in?

also, does it matter that i have the best buy version? what is the difference?

Yes. It's just like a desktop. Remove the heatsink, swap the processor, then put it back. I think you know the other little steps inbetween so I'll myself the time.

The Best Buy model doesn't have the real Asus warranty, and it cannot accept quads.

sounds good, definately something to look into.

I also noticed people talking about running at 90c plus while gaming, i guess im not doing bad at all at 65c haha.

The 90*C that they are talking about is the GPU temp.

with a P series CPU I'd not expect you to break 70C OC'd under heavy load, with properly applied thermal paste. if you go with the T series you might have a harder time, 75-80C.

I just got out of a WOW 25 man raid, played for 5 hours straight, started at 23C and end at 28.5C ambient temp, all stock speeds,

Wow, nice temps. Seems your max hits about where mine does.

I tried the old trick i used to do on my alienware and took off the bottom panel and my temps were about 8 degrees lower in a raid than with it on lol.

That can do until i can get me one of the spare bottom covers to modify. Either that or use the CNC machine at work to drill out a really nice grid in the spot that should have been one. That is honestly so dumb that they made that look the way it does and serve absolutely no purpose.

I would love to find a way to actually build a custom cooler for it that would mount on the bottom and look somewhat factory...the possibilities are endless with a CNC.

Gonna head to microcenter tonight and see if they have the copper heatsinks, but i think they just have aluminum ones. Once i get my temps really low i can start messing with overclocking more, or just swapping out the CPU entirely. Theres a Directron here also i can check out.

I wonder why do faster CPU's eg, T9600 in ur case idle much lower than stock P7350's.. Mine even with a cooler on, never goes lower than 40 (it idles in the very low 40's)

Im curious too actually. I just got done doing the heatsink mod, switched to arctic silver, have my bottom panel off, sitting on a Coolermaster NotePal x2 (yea not the best but its decent). I even took the mesh cover off temporarily because i tested with and without and it seems with it on its blocking about 50% of the airflow.

Im currently on the road, but i get home tomorrow and ill actually cut out a hole in the mesh the size of the fan and put it back together.

I also OC'ed to 2.2Ghz and right now, in WoW (not really stressing it, im just runnin around in circles), my cores are at 57C and my video is at 73C

this is way higher than Abula's

Also, i keep seeing about not using the Nvidia firmware, and using the Dox firmware. What does this change with performance and cooling? can i use it on a 64x windows 7 system?

I read somewhere that the T series usually idle lower than P, but their load is higher than P, so its trade offs, don't remember where i read that though. I think xcskiier23, also had a similar expirience with the T9800.

It's probably just the quality between the two chips, Abula. The T series has the same lower voltages as the P series, so on paper they should be identical at idle. There are many other factors to consider as well so that all up in the air for anybody's guess. But definately the load temps will be lower on a P series.

    hey all,

I still have my T9800 working in my laptop and it runs great! I also have lower idle temps, ill have to look back and see what they are but i think it might load lower too. that might be the AS5 working but i dont know for sure.

As for performance in WOW, i dont play it anymore! sigh...
