Hi everyone, I'm doing the probably not so smart thing, and am considering a possible 'upgrade' to my A6000 laptop as well as some maintenance. So, I have some questions:

    1. How do I remove the heatsink? I following instructions in the disassembly manuals, undid the screws, but it doesn’t budge. Is there a knack or twist or something else I need to do? It seems to be quite firmly affixed…

    2. Once it is out, does anyone have any advice for cleaning it please? Aside from carefully lol

3 Thermal paste – after six years, I figure the factory stuff is looong gone, and in need of replacement. Can anyone please advise of any good makes available in New Zealand, or in general? Also, some instructions for removing the old stuff and putting new stuff in would be good? Any there any special tools required? I'm checking this on the net as we speak, but actually being told is a tad more reassuring...

    4. CPU ‘upgrade’ – I'm considering getting a faster processor - a 2ghz SL7SM / M760 vs my current M740 1.73ghz Intel CPU – not light speed fast, but one of the faster ones available in the same class of processor, and I vaguely recall an A6000 somewhere that had faster processors than my one. I've located this one through seeing my current model processor for sale, and then googling it to get to the wikipedia site about this class of processor.

Now, it’s six years old, I probably cannot get a new one, and given the age of the laptop, it’s not worth buying new anyway (I imagine it would cost most of the current market price of the laptop). Can anyone please recommend any places for getting these processors, e.g. parts places, laptop recyclers? Is there anything in particular I should be asking or looking for re: storage, condition, etc? I have one in mind, but again, it's nice to ask for advice.

As for removal and installation, I’m happy to buy whatever tools are required to do the change myself, does anyone have any recommendations or hint’s/tips please? I have the disassembly and upgrades manual, but it didn't help me with removing the heatsink, so I may as well ask now!

How do I check whether the 'new' processor will be compatible please? The one listed above is okay?

Thanks to all in advance for your help and for reading this!

i dont see how changing the processor will increase the speed of your computer by much anyways, since it is still a pentium M. why dont you get a new laptop instead? the motherboard is the same, you will still be limited by the same north/south bridge bandwidth etc which will make a CPU upgrade practically un-noticeable. the only difference between the two CPU is the 0.27 GHZ speed, which probably won't really effect your overall performance

Thanks for that SIlverfern, appreciated. :) There's nothing wrong with my laptop, just that I'm giving it a clean up, so was considering a tweak or two. I stumbled across a faster processor, and thought why not? Guess it pays to ask! lol

Ultimately I will get windows reinstalled, but until then, it's just me asking questions!
