Hi, is there any way that I could use my W3V as a remote for my TV or DVD player by using some sort of freeware?

I'm sure it's possible, but the problem is the range is terrible, you'd have to almost be on top of your TV for it to work. Well, that's not right, but close enough you could probably push the buttons yourself ;)

Since a Pocket PC (Nevo or some other software) can be programmed to be used as a remote control, I would think that can be done on a notebook with with IR. If you point your IR directly to a TV, it is possible to switch it on about 10 feet away.

Right. Most IR ports on laptops and PDAs don't have the 'consumer grade' emitters needed for the range to act as a remote, except for a couple of PDAs that were sold with the Nevo software. They're meant for data transfer within 24" or so. If you're really serious about it, you may want to look into upgrading the emitter in the laptop.

Ditto....... CIR isn't on the W3 --- it is on the W2 and Z83 though.... with the IR on the W3 if you can get 3' you'd be lucky. With CIR you're looking at more like 20'.

.... Not to mention using a computer just as a basic remote is going to get old very quickly... like you'll use it twice and forget about it. If you could get a copy of the software that Nevo makes for tablets and "webpads" then you could actually make a full function remote that could control everything over wifi......
