Hey guys, fairly new to the forums.. Have a quick question.

I bought an ASUS Z96J a few years ago, and recently picked up a G50VT-X1.. I was looking at the power cables from both and noticed that the connectors appear to be the same, but the rest of the cable looks a bit different. How can I find out if I can use the old power cable for the Z96J with my new G50? I plugged the end of the old cord into my new laptop (while it was unplugged and the laptop turned off) and it seemed to fit well. The ends look identical. I'd really like to have 2 power cords, so I can keep one plugged in at home and one for when I'm on the road.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated. IF you guys need any more information or stats from the cables, let me know and I'll add it to this thread!

    -J

Sorry, I don't think it matters but its actually a G50VT-X5, not an X1.

Check the output specs on the power adapter itself. If the voltage is the same and the polarity is the same(you well see a + - symbol on the adapters) then its safe.

If the amperage is atleast the amount as the stock adapter then it will run and charge fine off of it, if it is less it may still work but charging will be slower and under high loads may actually draw power from the battery.

My adapter is 9 Volts 6.32 Amps output with the polarity being positive on the center pin and negative on the outer.

Do the power cables have model numbers / serial numbers?

Or how about having a look at the output figures from the power blocks? If they match then you should be fine. Finally, check the batteries on both machines, see if they say anything about inputs (though to be fair a number don't say much on them).

However, as a general rule if I want two power blocks/cables for my laptop then I buy them at same time as laptop or direct from manufacturer. I mean it's a small price to pay to know that if they balls'd up then they'd cover the cost of replacing said laptop.

I don't really know much about laptops, so I'm not completely sure about how to read the stats. Looks like the old one is a Delta electronics ADP-90SB BB

Here's a pic of a a Revision 3 version. It looks similar, and the input/output stats are the same:

Mine is slightly different, and part that plugs into the notebook is straight, not angled, but like I said, the stats appear to be the same:

    Input: 100 - 240V 1.5A 50-60Hz
    Output: 19V 4.74A

The new one is an asus ADP-120ZB BB. I can't really find any accurate pictures or websites for it, though. Came with a G50VT-X5.

    Input: 100-240V 2.0A 50-60 Hz
    Output: 19V 6.32A

I'm not sure how to read the polarity, but I'm guessing it's the little 3 dot diagram with two full circles and a 3/4 circle pointing in one direction, with + and - signs in either circle. That is identical on both adapters. looks like it's probably positive on the center pin and negative on the outer.

Sounds like, according to Clutch, the old power adapter should work, but might charge more slowly. I'm hoping to just be able to keep one plugged in at home, so I don't have to take the adapter out of my bag and plug it in and vice versa all the time.

Yup, looks to be about fine; as Clutch said should be ok but will charge slower.

I havent been able to measure how much the G50Vt-X5 draws at load or during gaming. General charging and light use the power adapter should be fine but under gaming expect the battery to be drawn from and eventually need to be shut off and charged.

Its like charging your cell phone while talking on it with a slow charger.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try and if it seems to hinder performance, I'll just get a new one that matches the laptop!
