Fortunately today, we had the V1JP and G1 on display at our Markham Location.
MysticGolem came to visit regarding the multi-bay feature in the V1JP, and I took some pictures of both notebooks side by side.
For those who may not know, the V1JP has a multi-bay in which you can take out optical drive and replace it with a modular bay battery or 2nd hard drive. However we discovered there is a small screw you must remove or loosen to remove the optical drive.
Enjoy the pictures![]()

Nice! Thanks for the pictures, Danny!
Wow, the G1 sticks out a bit more... -
nice pics, I dont like how the g1 stands up tall, it appears to have about an inch of extra of lid.
-
Hmm, interesting remark. While it's true it does have an inch of extra of lid, you must realize that it has an inch extra lid comparing to the V1. Now, how big is the V1 anyway? How does the V1 compare to other notebooks/standard? Just put it into perspective...per perspective.
That's all. -
both extremely attractive.
Im glad asus is taking the grey out of their notebooks. -
How easy is it to swap multibay drives? how long does it take? Do I need to carry a screw driver all day just for that purpose? If so, I'd say it's a pretty big design flaw.
-
Easy. Less than a minute. Just needs you to hold a spring button (whatever it's called, keeps the drive secured in place) and at the same time, pull the drive out. Don't forget to choose "Safely remove hardware" in Windows.
I'd say it's a pretty good feature on a laptop. As soon as they'll start bringing the secondary hard drives/batteries in Finland, I'll get to enjoy it. Which is probably never. Waah.
Edit: Said Danny, "However we discovered there is a small screw you must remove or loosen to remove the optical drive". I can't confirm this, since no screwdriver was required in my case. -
You might want to remove serial numbers from the pictures....
-
Wow very nice photos, would be also nice to see a G1 - A8Js comparison as well.

The V1JP's modular bay (Multi-bay) does have a screw that hold the optical drive in. You do have to remove it or loosen it. You can't pull the optical drive out without removing the screw, we tried that for several minutes.
So either permantly remove the screw, or leave the screw in but keep it loosen just enough to slide out the optical drive when you need it. There is still a Lock Button, just like the battery slot, so you need to press it and then slide out the optical drive. -
If that V1JP had a 7700... I love its looks, multibay and docking bay... but the x1700... dont get me wrong, its a good card, but I got used to the 7700 now on my A8Js and Oblivion looks gorgeous on it.... so... gotta stick with my A8Js for a while, it seems
Thanks for posting the great comparison pictures. Happy new year everyone (and happy party on tomorrow!)! -
Milestone: I have the V1Jp and there is no screw that I removed for the modular bay. All I did was slide the lock key and out came the optical drive.

hmm that's interesting, because me and Danny looked at it and was surprised about this, I personaly have to remove or loosen my screw in order to remove the optical drive. Oh well not a big deal for me, but it is worth pointing out.

great comparison pictures.
I like that V1jp. I think there are too many hairs to split between all the available and comparable asus notebooks. The G1 is a great deal, but i dont think it looks as nice or is as appealing as the v1jp.
Does the v1jp come with 2 gigs of ram? -
MilestonePC.com Company Representative
V1JP comes with only 1GB of ram, but has a lot of features and flexibility which makes this notebook appealing to the business user. Like the modular bay (multi-bay), the docking station which is optional, and the fingerprint reader for added security.
Both laptops indeed are very very good, and have a lot of cross platform uses, but we can primarily distinguish that the V1JP is more of a business notebook, and the G1 is more of a gamers notebook, despite both notebooks can games and both can operate as good video conference laptops. -
blagh...those pictures really make me want to feel the V1's carbon fiber under my palms instead of the A8's plastic
it's a moot point though since all my money's been sunk into tuition =( -
if you buy the v1jp in the united kingdom, you can but the unit with 2GB RAM.
-
The V1Jp is so much more mature looking. I thought the G1 was so great at first but now I think all the lights and shine make it look too flashy for my tastes. Plus so many scratches would show up on those surfaces. The difference in size is fairly substantial! I think I will be very focused on the V1Jp now. But performance wise how does it measure up to the G1?
One major question now that I see the difference in size of the two:
Is the cooling system in the G1 different then that of the V1Jp?
I would assume so due to the physical size difference, gpu difference, and the fact the the G1 is meant for gamers thus overclocking and heavy system loads.....
I would like to see a comparison (adding the extra Gb of ram to the V1) of these two notebooks during gaming. Specifically: Oblivion and Battlefield 2142. With all the same in game settings. Man that would be great! I would be they are fairly close but the G1 would win by a 10 to 20% margin or 1 to 2 fps.
I just wish you could get the guts of the G1 in the V1Jp!!!!!!!!!!! -

RacingNorth I understand how you feel.
I would agree the G1 is a really nice laptop, but a little too flashy, just like some of the Acer Ferrari's, maybe more flashy than that.
To be honest, I don't you will see such a big difference in gaming, but in synthetic benches you will see the differences.
Click on this, you will see all three laptops compared in synthetic benches, V1JP, G1 and G2.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=99581
Then use MysticGolem's review on the V1JP to see gaming experience in XP Pro, while using Lenardg's review on the V1JP with Vista and 2GB of Ram.
Then compare the G2P review I wrote and compare it to 6times7 and SloO's reviews on the G1. I believe overall you will not see a big difference in FPS.
With regards to cooling the G1 is based off the A6 chasis and the V1 was new, the cooling of both should be very similar, you shouldn't notice a difference.
I agree with you, the V1JP should have the internal workings of the G1, and it would have been the Perfect notebook. -
Here's a pic of the G1 heatsink assembly
http://product.pcpop.com/000035481/Picture/000259338.html
First the video card in the V1Jp removable and visible. I have no idea where the G1's video card is. I can only guess that in the picture the heatpipe snaking under the frame is heading to the video card. None of the other pictures show the video card either. The V1Jp's video card is almost right next to the CPU and has heatpipes going to it from the CPU. The V1Jp's heatsink assembly is also partially aluminum instead of all copper.
If someone has pictures of where the G1's video card is please link them.

Check this page out. It compares the G2P to the A8Js in multiple performace tests. This is the page for gaming results in fps. The G2P (which I think internally is almost the same as the V1 besides the screen size) lags behind in fps from the A8Js by 15% to 25%. This translates to a range of 5 to 25 fps in some games. Is this a big amount? In Oblivion 20 fps was the minimum (800 x 600; medium quality) Which sounds like a really bad resolution.

I don't own a Notebook yet, I only have a really basic desktop, and I game on the XBox 360 usually. So I have no idea how to interpret these results. But from my limited knowledge I say that the G1 has 20% better performance then the V1Jp. -
Can't speak to the G1 or the games you specifically mention, but my V1JP with 2GB of RAM, runs World Of Warcraft at 1680x1050 w/ nearly maxed graphics and gets a fairly solid 22-24 FPS, with occasional dips below that if I'm in a heavy firefight w/ particle effects and what not exploding all about. If I dial back the detail, I've gotten it as high as the mid to high 30s while maintaining the resolution.
I've only recently bought my V1 and using it for gaming was only a secondary usage for me, but all in all, I'm pretty happy w/ its performance as a gaming rig. I intend to fiddle more w/ dialing in between resolution and graphic detail and overall FPS that I'm 100% satisfied with. -
On the bottom side of my new Asus V1Jp laptop the hard drive cover (or lid or panel) comes out a little. I'm able to push the cover in, but it will come out spontaneous every few days. But, the hard drive cover won't fall out thank goodness because of the side with the screw.
Anybody having this problem? It it covered by ASUS' warranty?
Man, my laptop is so close to perfect from defects. -
diehard I don't seem to have that problem... when I swapped my HD out the day I got my V1, I seem to recall that the HD lid on the non-screw side snapped back in w/ a very emphatic/loud click... could it be that you just didn't quite seat it right? Try unscrewing the other side, releasing the lid then placing it back in more firmly/squarely?

It's all good now, thanks for the help! -
wow the cooling system in the G1 is way more beefy! Hmmm. I don't know much about notebooks but just by looking at the size of the copper heat pipes the G1 has a much higher cooling capacity then the V1Jp. But the V1Jp has such a better build quality and look I guess they have to skimp somewhere. I just wish I could get them each side by side and play a few games on each seeing how big of a difference it would be in fps. BF2142 and oblivion would be the main two.
Is the picture on the last page of the G1 and the V1Jp on this one of the cpu or gpu? If the G1 did have a much higher cooling capacity this would have to help in overclocking and overall reliability would it not? With the Go 7700 to boot (only 20% faster the V1Jp's X1700) I imagine the G1 would be a better preformer in games, but by how much?
I'm still jealous of the V1Jp owners though. Such a super nice machine! -
7700 go performance is exactly like you would think
It is 150% of the 7600 go. It is the middle point between the 7600 go and the 7800 go.
It should be around 150% of the x1700 give or take because they are different things.
I did a oblivion test with a s96j with the x1600 comparing it to my a8js. Oblivion is aparently favors ati cards as well. In the same settings I was getting 20 fps more. Or simply the x1600 does not run in on what i call high settings
even though this is not an incremental leap, these are both mid range cards, many recent games would list the x1700 as below the recomended specs and the 7700 as meeting them.
Oblivion for one. A lot of people made their most recent computer hardware purchase around that game as did I.
Also the upcoming game crysis. These list the 7600 gt as the minimum spec. not the 7600 gs which is going to be like the x1600 x1700 but they split that hair in the games recomended spec... and Ive seen it in real life as well.
So the v1j is in the same ballpark its going to run the same games but the recent leading edge ones it cant run the same way -
but is the lamborghini vx2 (performance-wise) better than the G1 ? or is the G1 really the most powerfull 15.4" notebook...?
-
MilestonePC.com Company Representative
The current G1 and European/Asian version of the VX2 are equal in performance, except the VX2 has a slightly faster cpu, other than they all around the G1 and VX2 are pretty much equal in performance.
The G1 and V1 are basically the only 2 most powerfull 15.4" notebooks in the market, other brands do offer some competition but, most will realize the G1 and V1 are in a league of their own. Especially the VX2.
