looking for the perfect laptop at the moment, but its just not happening.

sony FZ - gpu too slow, screen res too low, need a theodolite to assertain if the the hard drive is actually spinning (4200rpm = yuk)

asus G1s = gawdy looking, dont like it.
asus G2s = the same, and it seems like a poor choice anyway
asus VX2-S = sure will be nice, perhaps the price will be too much though, and theres no docking station for any of them

V1J looks perfect, same specs wise as the above 15.4inchers, plus you can have the dock which i will find useful. however...windows vista business.

that seems to be the easiest one to change, the OS, so if i buy the SR update to the V1J and then purchase an seperate copy of windows home premium can i just reformat and install that? and everything will work?

i know it sounds daft to essentially buy the OS twice. but i really dont want vista business. its either that or pony up the cash for the VX2S

Yes if you buy it you can install it on your laptop. The drivers are the same for both Business and Home if you stick with 32bit. 64bit you will have to look a bit harder. You can even get XP but I am not sure if Asus will make drivers availalbe for the new models.

Why dont you like Business? Home Premium just has the Media center and there are free alternatives to that. There are good payed once too and they are cheaper then Vista.

I think they do. You can try checking support.asus.com and searching for your model. The VX2 has XP drivers. The VX2S and F3Sv are listed but no drivers yet, so it's uncertain whether the new Santa Rosa refreshes will included XP drivers. I'll put my money on the fact they probably will make it available within the coming months for the newer models if they're not already on the site.

The VX2 is based on the V1J chassis and shares the same dock with it and the V2 series. I don't see why the VX2-S would loose the docking port.

Yeap, was about to mention that. The VX2 is essentially the V1's insides in a custom designed chassis by Lambo.
