Yep, what ruoste said. It's an expensive country in here, not mentioning the fact that we have odd keyboards.

merom configured v1j for 1680 euros price from the laptops4u.nl is better price then. But that is a good point that the warranty might not be good outside netherlands which seems strange if its an asus warranty. but it was a configurable choice so might have been a custom job therefore only warrantied from the dealer which wont do you much good in the us with a netherlands dealer warranty or at least would be pain to ever ship it back to them.

you wont say whether laptops4u ships to the US? or did you mean you dont know.

right now it doesnt' seem like there is any overseas merchant which offers a merom v1j to a US customer for reasonable rate and shipping cost, and ease of ordering from an english website and proper warranty.

if i found something good was going to maybe cancel v6j but i think i'll be fine with the yonah v6j for some time until a good deal on a merom v1j comes along.

it will hold me over and not make me rush into an unfavorable deal for a v1j but lets keep looking and posting merchants/prices etc.

i understand many here are not in the US but your info is helpful as well but since it is easier for you to get maybe we can concentrate on merchant suggestions etc. for getting a v1j shipped to the US.

    Meaning that I don't know. :)

Did you try e-mailing laptops4u yet? I'm sure they'll answer your questions in English, even if their site is only in Dutch. I couldn't find any comprehensive FAQ or shipping information from that page, so you might as well go ahead and ask.

Now, I pretty well know how you feel about whether you should buy something that's already available or wait for possibly better deals... I really, really hate this situation. I already spent a lot of time finding out what I should get, and every time the stores should receive those products, the date keeps getting pushed forward. Once more today, now the next shipment should arrive at 13th. Argh. I'm not really in a hurry, since my deadline for getting the laptop is at the end of this year, but now when I know what I want, I don't like the waiting.

BTW guys, there's another Dutch store which you should contact to ask about shipment to the US: http://www.computerpirates.com

Price seems about the same as laptop4u's. Didn't find any indication of them not shipping that far, and they definitely ship abroad. My earlier inquiries regarding the W3J were answered within hours and in good English. Good luck with yours! ;)

I heard only netherlands and uk have same qwerty keyboard as North ameica. and that the uk prices usually are not good for laptops in europe.

that leaves .nl ad laptops4u is supposedly one of the better prices especially after dropping significantly recently.

there may be othe incompatibility issues I'm overlooking or not aware of but the power cord is the main thing.

if connection on the laptop is the same as NA and on all then getting a power cord with US plug shouldn't be hard especially I you can use one from a NA asus or any laptop but it would be nice if there was a euro merchant (pref uk or netherlands I guess with same keyboard as NA) that catered to the importing customers from NA in whatever little ways to make it more worthwhile and the customer more confident about importing.

even better if they have a US affiliate for warranty of customized laptops whatever else and to be able to offer domestic shipping charge then after they ship the v1j say to their US afiliate. I know they haveto pay that so their would be an import surcharge or whatever but at least then your not paying some rediculous intrntnl shipping charge.

I think if a good euro merchant did this in catering to the north american importing customer they would do well and not have any competition at least not until other euro merchants saw how much they were making.

there are US cell phone online merchants that sell import gsm cell phones so I don't see why a us merchant couldn't just get these import laptops models especially ones we aren't ever getting and sell themseles. I guess there isn't as much of a market for it as cellphones which are also cheaper but still a euro merchant would be wise to set themselves up with the ability to sell to importing NA customers and again even cater to these customers with smple as US power cord and english version of site to order from. it couldn't hurt and the eaiser they make it and more comfortable and worry free they make it for the importing customer the better they will do.

Also the voltage is different. Netherlands, like most European countries, uses 230V whereas US has 120V. You will need to ask whether the power supply and battery are designed for 120V ~ 230V and NOT only 230V. That info can be easily found on the power supply. Most power supplies (at least in smaller appliances!) today are pretty flexible and can handle both voltages, but I wouldn't take it for granted.

The right side of the touchpad is always warm, but after a few days you get used to it. With higher temperatures inside the case, it gets warmer, but haven't felt it being really hot yet. The temperatures at the moment are, says Everest:

    Motherboard 49 c
    Processor 54 c
    HDD 35 c

Oh and it's not the HDD under the palm rest, but something else, not really sure

"As you'll probably want to hear the gripes:
    - the graininess problem is here, too. Looks like static noise, and is clearly visible on light colors with max screen brightness."

Is it possible to fix the graininess problem??? Is the BIOS update needed???
I want to buy V1JP this week so many thanks in advance for any help.

I read so many reviews about V6 series, and every time the temperature is the main problem...so sometimes after 2 or 3 hours working it powered off itself!!!!
Due to V1 is a follower of the V6-series I would like to know if some user of V1J noted the same problem?

    Thanks for any reply!!!!

I don't know if you read my review of the V6j, but I wouldn't say that it is a problem, its an annoyance, but not a problem. Also, mine has never shut down due to heat. I doubt the V1j will have poblems with it.

Oh. The anxiously awaited BIOS update. Flashed it, and it feels like a thin veil has been lifted, everything is crystal clear now.

And the heat: no issues, it keeps quite cool. The minor gripes i have (still, overall) are the constantly spinning (very silent) fan, and the slight screen flicker on max brightness (probably not common, but a possibility), which seems to be permanent, and forces me to use the second-highest level in well-lit conditions.

Gah, the suspense is killing me, when is this supposed to be available in the US? Or in Canada for that matter? I haven't seen as much as a peep except for a few months ago when I got a flyer for the V1J in my ASUSWorld catalog...

The V1J has kinda...died off from North America :D in my opinion. I think the focus in Asus is back onto the Core 2 Duo models, and upcoming gaming laptops :D :D :D :D

I saw and tested V1J today. This NB is great!!!!The fan doesn't disturb. The fonts are quite small but very shape (no graininess)!!The only cons that I figured out is a quite dark screen while working with battery (accumulator). But all together this NB is ql!!!I will wait till V1JP on the german's market available is and buy this superb thing.
I compared V1j with F3JP and the screen in F3JP is brighter, but glossy (what I don't like). In my opinion V1j is better without any question!!!
Thanks very much for reply about BIOS!!!!

    For the fans of V6-series:

I found nice shop in Munich where Asus V6835 VLP (Demo Version) only 999 euro costs!!!

    Hi there.

I totally agree with adampub, except with a few more !'s. ;) Can't hibernate with programs open since it ends up in an error, but one learns to live with it pretty fast.

Summa summarum, still very much in love with the V1J. The following is a bit annoying though: Can't find NHC (notenook hardware control) ACPI files for V1J. For testing purposes, it would be very nice to be able to control the fan speeds and kick-in temperatures.

Soo, if anyone has any information, pass it on, please.

    Thanks.

I returned mine as the DVD player did not close correctly. As soon as I've received a new one I'll review it!
