I know there was a shakeup at asus last week and they organized everything did they decide on anything about the v1j?
-
What shakeup?

The shakeup occured a while back, but its ok.
As for the V1J, sorry no new info as of yet, we all just have to wait.
I'm sure you saw these pictures:

Its one very good looking laptop. -
I actually know one of the Asus managers in Fremont and he's not sure too. He said it should be out around August-ish, but Taiwan has the final say.

I don't know if anyones already mentioned this, but some sites appear to be jumping the gone and are listing the V1J.
http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.asp?sku=323349
They are quoting a 15.4" WSXGA+ screen size so cross your fingers that ASUS has relented. They are also reporting an 8-cell 77WHr battery that looks promising, although I was hoping for a 9-cell. (The F2 and F3 series use 9-cell batteries with 80WHr ratings which would have been nice.) The W3J's battery was 71WHr so hopefully it'll offer solid 3-4Hr battery life.
The only thing disconcerting is the use of a 1.83GHz T2400. What is up with that? I was hoping for at least a 2GHz T2500 like the W3J, given the market and the fact that the 2.33GHz T2700 should be available soon. A 120GB hard drive with a drop protection mechanism and a HD-DVD drive were also on my wish list.
Anyways, the site could be lying so if anyone in the know could confirm or deny. (I know this is probably starting to get annoying since I and I'm sure others have asked about the V1J repeatedly over the last while so I apologise in advance.) -
It said something about 7-15-06, anyone can read norwegian? -
-
I believe it's too early to determine when or what the V1J will have, my understanding is that they haven't even started production and there is an issue of waiting on Intel to determine when the release of the Intel Duo 2 processers will be...2nd the fact that the shows (CeBit and the german show) both state the screen as being WXGA+ while I know for a fact that American resellers are asking for the WSXGA+. So I would wait for the end of this month going into August for new news from Asus regarding the V1J.
The question I have is what's this shakup everyone is reffering too? -
More and more stores add the V1J to their website, which, as Justin stated, doesn't necessarily mean production has started yet, but makes me think ASUS informed the retailers on the release date of it.
To my surprise the pricing of it is lower than the the V6J! The US pricing strategy differs of that in Europe so you can't really draw conclusions from that, but you never know. -

emm... this site list some more details including weight, and measurements, looks interesting.

Well, that's all i can see from the site.

If it has a 1.8mhz processer I consider it a disapointment will all those features
..I feel it's too early to confirm the specs (I hope at least)

Don't get too hung up on cpu, ram or hard drive... or even screen res because these are options sure to be up to par for the US model. Typically, what I could expect for this model would be something similiar to the W2 and W3... meaning the US model should have at least a 2.0ghz cpu, 1 x 1gb of DDR2 667, and 100gb/5400rpm hard drive and WSXGA+ 15.4" colorshine screen. I would actually think that a 120 or bigger drive may even be likely if the release is pushed into the fall in the US after the 64 bit cpus are released..... that also may play with the overal speed of the cpu because I'm not sure how those are changing on with the 64 bit versions.

I dont' think it woudl make sense that the v6j is more expensive than the v1j ...
U sure you mean USD and not something liek pounds ? -
Euros.
The V6J is around the 1900 EUR ( www.xe.com for converting to $)
The V1J, according to several sites is between the 1650 and 1800 EUR.
But again, the situation is likely to differ in the US.
This is what Justin said:
-
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
If you take the higher price 1800 Euros = ~2300 USD.
But if and when the V1J comes to NA, the price would be lower if the specs are the same, so drop the price by another 10% for coming to NA. That would make the V1J cost ~2100 USD, this is with the exact same specs as I listed above.
And Since Justin suggests that the specs would most likely be bumped up, then your looking at something like 2.0ghz, 1x1gb DDR2 @ 667mhz, a big HD, all of this Justin has mentioned.
This can boost the price from ~2100 to something like ~2300+ USD.
In anycase, this laptop does look nice, but to me it seems like it has a bigger footprint than other 15.4" models. =\
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
I agree with the Mystic one on the V1J's footprint. While the weight is just about 6 lbs.
, the dimensions seem vitually identical to my old Inspiron 8600. Still, the V1 is gonna be quite a machine.
-
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
Also if you look really close, you'll see that the V1J is half an inch Longer and 1.42" thick, when compared to many 15.4" notebook.
14.4" Long (length) vs 13.9" or 14" when looking at the Z70va and other 15.4".
Also the S96j/Z96j are 6+ lbs and are 1.5" thick in the back.
So my point is, since it has a bigger footpring and is not as thin as the V6J, there could be less heat?? Since there's more room for the GPU to displace its heat throughout the machine.
This seems to be a plus in my mind.
Yes the weight is ~6lbs, which is good, since most 15.4" are 6lbs+, there are exceptions like the 15.4" MBP weighing 5.5lbs, and the Samsung X60 and X50 that weight roughly 5.6lbs. And the Z70va also weight something close to 6lbs.
What would be interesting is to see how long the battery lasts for the V1J.
I believe i saw a site stating that the battery was an 8 cell battery 77 megawatt hour.
If the laptop consumes 20 megawatts per hours then you can end up with close to 4 hours!!
I have high hope for battery life on this despite the internal components are the same as many other 15.4" and they only get 3+ hours lol. We'll see soon enough.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Oh, and in honour of the frequent inquiries on the release date of the V1J, I'm dubbing it Asus' "Spy Camera" model for the season... -
Found some news:
According to some Swiss web shops it will be available around the 15th of August (in Europe).
Furthermore, there seems to be another model, the V1J-AK008P, which has different specs than I initially stated:
T2500
2048MB - 667MHz
120GB 5400RPM
Now I wonder whether the model I've seen in Dutch and Scandinavian web shops will be released more ealy or not.
Model 1:
Model 2:
To be honest I like the black model better. -
CalebSchmerge Woof NBR Reviewer
I have to agree, its certainly not bad, but the older was nicer.

Could be the viewing angles...
The lid looks like a V6 -
PROPortable Company Representative
There is no new or older model... if the angle isn't throwing it off..... then it's one of the optional colors that could be ordered. Each county usually has a say in the color they end up ordering.... Most likely the US will get black on black with fine silver detail.

heh a widescreen v6 or a w3j's bigger brother

I don't know where Empulse was getting his recent information, but the July Pricelist for Switzerland supports him.
http://ch.asus.com/410/html/share/5/txt/61/ASUS_NB_pricelist.pdf
It's on page 11 and they configure it as:
15.4" WSXGA+
2GHz T2500
512MB X1600 HM
2x1GB DDR2 667
120GB 5400rpm SATA
8x DVD Multi DL with Lightscribe
Windows XP Pro
2 year warranty
webcam, bluetooth etc
for 3549CHF. I believe that's around $3263 (CND) a bit expensive for me.
Now I know processor, hard drive, memory, etc. will be different when it comes to North America, but there are a few things I noticed in these latest specs from ASUS Switzerland and the previous specs here:
http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.asp?sku=323370
First, weight. It was previously listed as 2.7kg and now Switzerland is saying 2.9kg. It's getting kind of heavy now, but that might just be component choice. What's wierder is dimensions. Previously it was 36.3 cm x 26.3 cm x 3.6 cm, now Switzerland says 35.4cm x 28.4cm x 35mm. Now weight and components can change, but I can't really explain the change in dimensions. The only explanation is battery differences, but that doesn't make sense. Previously they used a 8 cell 5200mAh and Switzerland uses a 8 cell 4800mAh, but Switzerland's V1J is actually deeper instead of the inverse.
Other interesting things are that Switzerland doesn't use a 1000 BaseT LAN. Switzerland is also listing the V1J as including a Subwoofer. If it really does offer great sound I can't complain although as I noted, the weight has gone up. I hope they aren't confusing the V1J's specs with the W1J though or copy and pasting them and forgetting to update.
Hopefully when it comes to North America, they'll offer a 1x2GB configuration instead of 2x1GB, it'll make it easier to upgrade later like the W3J refresh.

I just measured the following systems in inches and converted them for you... these measurements are from a tabletop to the top of the heighest point on the system... so these include the feet. After having used the W2 for a long period of time I was actually surprised when I went to grab my brother's W1n to measure it.... it's actually darn thin..... the "thinnest" part of the W1, minus the feet is just about at 1 inch, which is what... 30-31mm.. That's where the big difference. The V1 in terms of how the US is looking at it is a thinner, more powerful, replacement to the W1.... If it's as thick as the W1 with it's feet, it's fine..... The W1 and W3 are the same thickness and that's really not "thick".... and the graphics card needs about that thickness to allow for the proper cooling... so I can believe that. It was my understanding that the V1 was thinner - even if by a hair, but it still makes for a thin 15.4" as well equipt as it will be...... but the measurments you're finding just don't seem like they're measured the same way because the W1 would be more like the V6's size and given the difference, the V1 would seem more like the W2's size.... but I really think they're more similiar than anything.
The V6 is 30mm at it's thickest....
The W3 is 35mm at it's thickest...
The W1 is 35mm at it's thickest...
The W2 is 38mm at it's thickest.... -
Here's a little more intrigue on the mysterious V1J...
A friend of mine is working temporarily in the U.K. She sent me an interesting link, yesterday. According to this site, they'll be getting the V1J in stock on August 16. She's scheduled to return to the U.S. on the 10th, but is trying to extend her assignment until the 21st so she can grab a V1J. That's one dedicated Asus fan!!!
Here's the link: http://www.morecomputers.co.uk/textra.asp?pn=V1J-AK006P -
Now available in Germany for 2500 euros
http://info.asus.de/csm/newspics/V1-left-open02.jpg
btw, it's equipped with a T2500.
How much longer could it possible be until it's released here??? -
It is not available yet in Europe. Most Swiss web shops estimate it to arrive at the end of August (varying from 22nd - 28), while others claim to have it in stock already.
I doubt it if they really have it in stock already. I'd say the end of August is more appropriate. -
According to Tom's Hardware Germany it is available. It's without a merom processor though.
-

Here's the link to the full German V1J article. It officially launched there on August 1st.

Please let the North American model have a 2GHz+ Merom and arrive in September at the latest. -
The dock looks interesting if it is inexpensive
Also it says it has a mini DVI port!!!
Is there any chance this could come in a $2k USD or less? -
i could really really really use one by then. does anyone know what the chasis is made from?? i think i read somewhere it's carbon fibre.
-
I'm in love.
-
Where is the V series supposed to rank in build quality? Above the A series but worse than the W?
-
The European will be supplied with two models. Namely, one with T2500 and 120GB 5400RPM at approx. €2200,- and one with a T2400 and 80GB 5400RPM at approx €1600.

For you Ami's:
-
so does anyone know what the v1j is made from?? carbon fibre??? i cant seem to get an email to contact asus and ask them.
-
-
so is HDMI connector confirmed? That's a big step towards the next generation laptops.
-
I just read the specs more carefully.
It says there is HD DVD! Can anyone confirm? That would be a pretty incredible entertainment machine with DVI out, HDMI and HD DVD. Wow. Amazing if they can bundle all this for $2100. -
That would be crazy if it was HD DVD- I didnt kno those were even out yet in laptops. BTW is there a new power4gear version out? From looking at the spec sheet it says it supports the "new" power4gear.
thanks
Dan -
the W2P was supposed to be hd dvd and hdmi/dvi out but istn' out yet. seems w1j is out in europe and doesn't have all that.
meantime i dont whether to give into my wife on a dell or hp for now and wait for a new hddvd asus like the W2P or just get a v6j asus now upgraded with a core 2 duo , more ram and more hd -
and yeah hddvd is out in laptops , toshiba has had for some time and there are bluray dvd laptops too
V1J released
