I'm going to buy my brother a new laptop and he is a big gamer and video editing freak - but also needs a laptop for work so he/we don't want the flashy lights on the Asus G1/2 or any other 17" beast.

I'm thinking I want an Asus and so am thinking about the V1JP or the
A8js but want to make sure you guys think that both would be able to handle STALKER and Crysis when they come out AND won't run too hot when playing both online. The video editing I'm guessing we can take care of with an additional external HD and 2GB of RAM.

    Any thoughts?

You can turn off the lights on the G1/2 so if that is the only thing that is stopping you from making it one of the options to buy then you might want to reconsider. Gaming wise, the G1 should have the best video card from all the other options that you mentioned, so it will be better suited for playing games like Crysis or Stalker. I own a G1 myself and I love it!

Well, out of the V1J, A8Js and G1 the G1 would be best because it has the GeForce 7700 and 15.4 inch screen. The GeForce 7700 is the best graphics card for 15.4 inch laptops.

But...if you live in North America, and you don't really have a budget/you have oodles of money, you should look at the upcoming VX2 Lamborghini. Its the laptop of all laptops, in my opinion (and many others too). The VX2 is expected to have a GeForce 8700 or 8800 graphics card, so it would be the best graphics card for a 15.4 inch laptop, and has DirectX 10. Also lots of nifty features, best design ever. The only problem with the VX2 (not really a problem, but 'drawback', is its estimated around $3000 US.

I wouldn't buy a laptop to play Stalker or Crysis until they are actually out.

Stalker might run on current cards, since it has been in development virtually forever, but Crysis is going to push the graphics edge. I would wait and get the best graphics in a laptop that are available when it's released.

A good thought, Jumper @ #7. And a nice thought about the VX2, Sam @ #3but that price would be out of my range - and I don't like the branding on the current Lamborghini model (which I saw in a shop in NY)...

I see Best Buy have the G1 in stock...I'll have a look at it in a store this week and see whether the lights and green make it look too gamey to look professional...

Considering that Crysis is the poster boy for DX10 right now, I would imagine any current DX9 based GPU is going to be pushed hard to render that game, and if it does, your frame rate's gotta hurt at least some.
