My V1S has a 160GB Sata150 5400rpm hard drive, I'd like to put in a 200GB Sata300 7200rpm hard drive.
Does anybody know if the V1s supports Sata300 drives?

As far as I know the Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm is Serial ATA-150 and it should be fine with your V1S.

Thanks, it would be nice to know if a Sata300 worked though. I've read reviews of a seagate 200gb sata300 7200rpm drive on dabs.com and people seem to give it good reviews even when it has been added to machines far older than mine. Might be worth a try, maybe if I attach it to the esata port on the outside of the machine that would be a good way of testing it.

I don't know. I would say you're probably ok, as the bad controllers are the odd ones out.
You can phone ASUS support and ask them but I'll doubt they know offhand -- but they can obtain the spec sheet.
Or you can just ask them if the motherboard will support the SATA 300 HDD. -
I had no Problem upgrading to SATA300 Seagate Momentus 7200.2

Windows Vista Backup and Restore Center.
The better way is to connect the second drive via USB, eSATA or Modular Bay and use Acronis True Image 10 clone function. -
For the record, PM965 chipset uses ICH8-M and supports SATA2. 945PM uses ICH7-M which doesn't (support exists on desktop only).

Intel introduced SATA-II/300 in the 945 chipset. However, it seems they cheaped out on the laptop side for the first generation:

Well the V1S has Esata, Which by definition is Sata/300, I think they would be on the same controller so that should mean their both Sata300 (I know it was already proven to be sata300, Just wanted to show another way of thinking ^^)

It would be very handy if someone could clarify exactly what the v1s can handle, is it sata 150 or sata 300?
I want to upgrade my hard drive as mine came with a 4200rpm drive and it feels like it's holding the machine back a bit.
I obviously want to get the best possible to make the most of my v1s.

I installed a segate momentus 200GB 7200rpm SATA300 drive in my V1S the other day after using Maxblast to clone the original drive using the esata port. The drive is still set to SATA150 using the jumper though. As things currently stand it helped improve the Hard Drive score in Vista by 1 point from 4.5 to 5.5. Doesn't seem to have affected battery life either.

Yep, got it installed, and running just fine from it. Haven't run HDTune to get any metrics on it, though. Very easy installation into the notebook, although the cloning process using Acronis did not work like it should have. Ended up just restoring the previous nights backup from Windows Home Server, and worked like a charm. Windows recognized the new hardware, installed the drivers, and works perfectly, now.
I didn't get a full point jump in my Windows Experience Index (forget what it is, now, since I am not on my laptop), but still got a decent bump. -
i'm not 100% certain on this, but i have been told that it really doesn't matter if it is sata 150 or 300 because current notebooks can't even handle the 150 mb/s transfer rate anyhow, so it is unlikely that going to sata300 will give you any performance increase.

No current notebook HDD (including the SSDs, which just crossed 100Mb/s) is producing transfer rates at 150Mb/s, let alone 300Mb/s; spindle models max out around 80 in best cases. The 150/300 is a theoretical max. -
With reference to upgrading to a new hard drive (with vista as o.s.).
I have 2 questions:
1. Does this invalidate the Asus warranty (can't seem to get a straight answer from Asus).
2. Does Vista work as expected or does it mention that vista needs activated?
(I have read changing a component in a vista environment may require a new vista key).
Any advice glady received.

1. No, but keep the old HDD just in case you need to swap it back. Typically upgrading RAM and HDD won't void the warranty.
2. No. AFAIK ASUS uses VLK on XP and BIOS OEM activation for Vista.
