Just thought I'd ask here in case I'm doing something dumb.

In the last 24 hours my V1S has decided that it's no longer going to power the laptop from battery. If I have the AC cord plugged in, the laptop boots and runs just fine, but as soon as I remove the cord it's as if I pulled the power out of a desktop machine, and the laptop dies.

Both Vista and NHC agree that a battery is present and indeed is charged to 100%, but the laptop still demands a permanent mains supply in order to work - somewhat limiting for a mobile device!

I have tried reseating the battery, making sure the contacts are clear, and all the usual stuff, but no success.

Am I missing something really obvious, or do I need to RMA it? What are Asus like for turnaround on RMAs? Am I best off contacting the supplier or Asus directly? (I'm in the UK)

Do you have, or have you used, one of the modular batteries that goes into the modular bay? They have been known to "kill" the main batteries in the V1S laptops (and I had it happen to mine).

No - I have never had or used the modular battery in this laptop.

What's odd is that the orange charging light is on *all* the time.

Even when there is no battery in the laptop? That would lead me to believe that it is a problem with the laptop itself, rather than just the battery.

There is a basic step-by-step troubleshooting guide for batteries on the Asus laptop. I'll see if I can find the link for it again, but it just asks several questions, and based on what the answers are, determines whether or not it is a battery issue or laptop issue.

I just got a "new" main battery back from Asus, since my modular killed my other main. I got a main battery that has 37% battery wear already. NOT HAPPY. But, at least it works.

Ah well - I have Asus picking up the whole laptop for RMA.

What I find weird is that the serial number for the laptop is on the battery, not the laptop itself! There is a silver sticker underneath which I assume is the serial, but that's been rubbed away through normal use.

Got the laptop back today and all is working well again. The report said they swapped the battery, which is exactly what Matt said. Not too bad a turnaround really.

I have the same problem. This seem to be a common problem, Do I have to RMA the whole computer or just the battery (ies)?

My main battery died after using the Modular bay battery. The modular battery works but its charging quite slow and wont reach 100%. The computer is able to run with the small battery, but as soon as the modular is completely drained, the computer dies all of a sudden.

    The main battery wont charge.

So, which parts do i have to RMA? I rather dont like RMA the lappy if not nessesery. It takes weeks to get it back... =(

I only had the battery replaced - but even so I sent them the whole thing and they turned it around in about 10 calender days.

Spray, I suggest you get a REFUND on the modular, because it seems this problem (modular kills main) will never be fixed for the V1S model. Just like the wear problems have never ever been fixed for any model that has them.

Then, replace your main battery without sending the notebook in.

This seems to be the most efficient option given your situation.

Yeah but the question is IF only replacing the main battery will solve the problems? So theres no way that the modular batt will work, ever?

And EBE, weres that "modular battery kills main" thread that you are talking about? Please post me a link here! I have used the search function.

I don't have a link myself, sorry... it's called I think V1S battery wear or somethinig along those lines.

I cannot guarantee that replacing main will solve the problems.

I don't think there is a way that the modular will work, ever... There has been talk of new batches of main or modular batteries but I haven't seen any confirmation. ASUS never cares about fixing this sort of thing.

I have emailed a link to this thread to Asus and he said that they will have look at it, so please post as many links as possible here about he modular bay battery problem.
I will start a new thread about this and how to solve it.

I must know if im forced to RMA the complete computer or just the batteries (battery?).

Here's the link to the thread you're looking for. You have to use advanced search with some modifiers to find it.

The short answer to this is that you have the choice to either use the Main battery or the Modular Bay battery...but since the main battery is bigger you may as well use that and NEVER use the modular bay battery.

You will only need to RMA ur battery not the entire laptop because Asus has not solved this problem yet (or may never).

What happens when u use both modular and main battery together, is that once the modular bay battery is drained it is suppose to use the main battery but instead, it kills the main battery. Leaving that main battery useless.

RMA ur main battery and never use the modular one.

    Thanks,

Better yet, refund your modular battery, because this problem makes it unusable.

You can try contacting the place you purchased it from, and explain that it cannot be used in the notebook without seriously damaging it.
