ooh! Thank you chandyperry
-
hm I don't like the look of the hinges from the inside. I remember not liking that on other cheaper asus models.
the v6j doesn't have those visible hinges.
you didn't take any pic of the screen o full open view just keyboard . no side shot eiether. guess we can see pics on site but maybe you should look at those to get idea on what angles andpics are useful.
not overly impressed with the looks as I thought I would be. -
Thanks chandyperry.
-
Pretty impressed with it so far, the camera doesn't look like a bad pimple on it with a large border around the LCD.
True they don't have the W2 and V6 hinges, but thats probrably to accomodate the amount of ports(The V6 is very port limited), and so that the docking station will fit there, and not break the LCD when you open it up. -

The pic from above looks like the w7j. I would have thought this would be rival to the aesthetics of the v6j....
-
That is very nice! More pictures please. We want the full show!
-
you will find the others pictures here :
http://fabiencrimi.free.fr/V1J/
The resolution of the screen is very good and the cpu is very fast. more comments later... -
here's a few shots more, hope you like 'em.

And a few more. Sorry for bad white balance and general quality, couldn't take very specific pics with the camera, was surprisingly hard to even get this quality. I think the pictures really don't do justice to the screen. It's so sharp that you can't really see the pixels, which is a very nice effect. I'm never going back to 17" with 1280x1024
The other laptop is an unknown HP model, estimation 2 years old, don't know about the screen settings. There was a 'slight' difference in viewing angles.Attached Files:

Great work Ruoste. What are the pro's and cons in your opinion?
-
You know what? It looks awesome closed.
Open it looks just like the s96j. The majority of its parts are going to be the same even.
Id love to own one mind you I just think that nice looking notebooks are a more expensive addiction than crack.... -
- The lid and palm wrests are (soft) plastic, which scratches pretty easily. Or it just seems to, time will tell.
- The graininess, which i'm waiting a comment on from the taiwanese folks. (This one also has a bit of screen flicker on max brightness, but i doubt it being common. Reported also.)
- There's always a tiny bit of noise, since there's always a fan on to push the heat out of the right side. This also requires you to adjust the placing of the mouse, but i haven't found that the least bit annoying.
- The buttons of the touchpad are quite difficult to use, therefore bad.
+ Keeps quite cool due to the airflow. Left side of the chassis is always room temperature it seems, while the right side gets warm. 'Hot' depends on the user, but i haven't found the right-side palm rest getting uncomfortably hot even when the processor is pushing >70 celsius temperatures for longer periods, just quite warm.
+ The screen is just amazing, and the viewing angles are better than on any laptop i've seen.
+ The keyboard doesn't bend, doesn't make a noticeable sound, and is surprisingly comfortable to use. I got used to it almost immidiately, and i've used full-sized keyboards all my life.
+ Hot-swappable DVD drive is a GREAT thing and easy to use. Now if i can just get my hands on that extra battery pack...
Generally everything works, and quality is superb. -
Amazing pics Ruoste. Thanks for those and for your opinion on the V1J too!
Now if only it would come out in North America...
Now if only I could dig up enough ka-ching to buy it....

*Drool*
Are you planning on getting the dock? That's what I really want to see a review of. -

I'm not sure if you've posted them, but what are the specs of your V1j configuration? Also is it made of carbon fibre like the V6J, I think it's been mentioned before that it's not. It still looks great though.
-
does it have bluetooth?
-
how much did you pay for it?
-
Wow looks very nice... a price though would be nice.
-
Probably around 2000-2200 EUR --- www.xe.com.
-
It was mentioned in the other V1J thread, but the lowest Finnish prices for that Yonah model were around 1800EUR. The Merom model is around 2200.
-
Yep, 1800 and change. Plus, had to get another 1gb block or ram, so it cost total 1960 euros.
The (Core Duo) model sold here is ASUS V1J-AK002P 15.4" WSXGA+ / T2400 / X1600 / 1024MB / 100GB / BT2.0+EDR etc.
Docking station isn't here yet, not sure when it will... And i think Justin from PROPortable said that you're maybe seeing the V1J released in NA around the time that the docking station is ready to ship? Don't know what's the word at the moment though.
Sorry for the salt in yer wounds... Let's hope this finds its way to NA before christmas -
My model :
V1J-AJ004P : T7200/ X1600 / 1GB RAM/ 100 Go 5400tpm HDD/ WIFI/ BT/Win Home : 1641€ + 89€ of delivery costs = 1720€
I agree with Ruoste. There is a fan wich works permanently but slowly. It is strange because on my ohter asus computer (Pundit), I can change the settings in the bios. The bios of the V1J is very light !
Other point : the graininess problem. Ruoste could you tell me who is the person do you contact at Asus ? I'll send an email to fix this problem. -
Hi
I want to order the v1j also, but what about this graininess?? is it a factory problem or anything else. Is it disturbing and how exactly does it affect display?
Thanks in advance before I order also

Check out the x1600 graininess fix thread in the Asus Support section. Ken said that Asus will post the new BIOS that fixes the issue on either the European or Asian support sites. -
nice looking machine
I like the design of it...
I got A8Js which is very strong machine the design is fare, nice i can say but V1j is cooler! -

Dear Valued Customer
Have you tried perform a full system recovery with the bundled recovery cd's?
If you still dont get it to work, please contact our Nordic Notebook Hotline on (09) 69 37 96 90 (10:00-18:00) [GMT+2]
Best Regards

"No idea, try the package solution" in so many words. I contacted them through the support form on their global site, and unfortunately got directed straight to Nordic ASUS. Chandyperry, if you could find out your hotline and contact them also, it would be great.
Another request: you seem to have a good camera for very close shots, could you try to take a picture of the graininess? Tilt the screen if you need to, it's quite visible on light colors as you've surely noticed. I wouldn't say, though, that one should because of that consider another model, since it's a relatively tiny annoyance.
Thanks Arbuckle, have to dig through the Asus support site also. Very little on V1J there, but havent looked for X1600 fixes yet. -
They might as well told you to try "add/remove programs".
-
Looks like a solid performer as well, check out this first look review from What Laptop in the UK, these guys are prety consistant in their reviews
-
That laptop is beautiful.
-
Nice, thanks for the pic. I agree with just about everything they say. Except for the screen, what do they mean by "standard TFT panel"? As opposed to what? In my subjective view this panel is just right, and you really have to be expecting special with a capital $ to be disappointed with it.
On the graininess matter, it seems that a bios update is on the way for V1J too, ETA unknown... http://www.notebookforums.com/thread173555-11.html Sorry if this is old news. -
Yeah I have a W3J and the slight grainyness was the only thing I not 100% happy with, I stil thought the screen was nice but with the new Bios, it is just superb.
if you think the screen is nice now wait till you update your bios, you will love it! -
ltcommander_data Notebook Deity
I'm confused about their Standard TFT comment to, but with the following paragraph on there being faster GPUs, I interpreted as them feeling that the MR X1600 is underpowered to run games at the full 1680x1050 resolution. Although it's not like there are a lot of mobile GPUs that can actual handle gameplay at that resolution in modern games.
-
If you read their other reviews you will find out that in the context of how they review, this is actually a very positive review, they will always point out the highs and lows of every system, no matter who made it or how much it cost.
At the end of the day it is just their opinion, but they test laptops all day long for thier job, so I kind of value what they say.
About the ATI, maybe you misinterpereted the review, after the comment about the TFT they said
"Supported with the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, which comes with 512mb of dedicated memory and is deffinately on the list of requirements for gamers"
I think they are saying that the X1600 is a very desireable GPU for gamers. and that maybe they could have put in a higher quality TFT to match the good GPU?
you can check out some of their other reviews here:
http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/
All in all I think it is a positive review, I would buy one. -
They were probably thinking Asus should've offered a transreflective display option.

Anyways, the V1J is a nice labtop. If only it'll get to NA soon so I can actually take a look for myself. I wonder if they reviewed the W3J? -
Yeah to be honest I had to read it twice to make sure of what they were saying, I havent seen a W3J come through yet but if it follows the pedigree of the W3V check this out!
-
Yes, definitely positive all the way. I can understand them craving for a better screen as they're probably testing the cutting edge of laptop tech. But for someone from a less tech-savvy background, this is definitely adequate, probably much more.
If the 'while' is confusing, replace it with 'as' or maybe 'since'. It's not out of place, it's just that they're British... -
eep. the ctrl button. =)
-
Wow, the V1j is a very sleek laptop. Looks tempting--too bad it's a wee bit on the expensive side.
