First of all, I will need to have a notebook by the end of May ultimately. I live in Europe, so release dates are somewhat earlier than for the US, which might give me more options to choose from. Does anyone know whether the V1J will be released ealier on than the W1j (in Europe)?

Second, I've asked this question before, but didn't get a reply on it, hopefully someone is able to answer it this time. Is it wise to take a 7200 RPM harddisk instead of a 5400RPM harddisk, with regard to the heat issues of previous models? 7200 or 5400 is quite a difference...

Third, I am little confused now, as there are so many new notebooks and specs are hard to find back. That's why I'd like to know wheter there are any other Asus notebooks - that fulfill my demands - I shouldn't forget to consider.

    Demands:
The screen size must be: 15'' or 15.4''
The video card must be x1600 256MB
The screen resolution must be high, preferably 1680 x 1050.

Last, what are the exact differences between the W1J and V1J?
I know the V1J is quite ligher (and has an other chasis) than the W1J (7p - 6p) and the dimensions of the V1J are smaller.

Futhermore, we all know the thinner models are more sensible for heat issues... would this be the case with the V1J? And what exactly makes it lighter? It's quite sure the W1J will be made of carbon, of what material will the V1J be made?

Any other differences (except for the tv card in the W1J and finger print reader for the V1J)?

Thanks and sorry for asking some questions again, but I read so many that I've forgotten some things already....

The differences between the two are one. the w1j is a multimedia notebook designed with a tv tuner. It is mostly plastic with some carbon fibor in it. They only did the true carbon fiber notebook for a short run and aluminum cover and palmrest is what it will most likely have. it some are wsxga and some are just xga. The W1j might have a better video card simply because it has more room to cool. also the w1j is probably at least 1.5lbs heavier than the v1j. the thinner models will have more heat but its really not all that bad. the V6j isnt really bad heat wise. gets warm though. a good 7200 rpm drive like a seagate really doesnt produce much more heat it is well worth the speed increase. even battery life on the new drives arent effected much compared to 5400rpm. the v1j just uses light and smaller components and has less hardware like no tv tuner. Thats why its thinner. personaly unless you need a tv tuner i would go with the v1j anyday its a much lighter notebook. and is really going to be a beautiful machine. also i think the v series keyboards are better firmer then the w series.

Thank you very very much for the help! I wasn't planning to use the tv card.
First I was almost sure to buy the W1J, but not I tend more towards the V1J.

Does anyone which of the two will be released first? Justin?

again the weight and some other stuff is speculation from me. But i know asus laptops pretty well i have owned 5 of them. and i have a w2v and z63a right now. the w1j is just a refresh. but the v1j is brand new. both are great pcs but the v1j is the same perforance and just as good build so you might as well save the extra weight.

    Will V1J have DVI?
    Express Card?
    swappable drive?
Bright screen (contrast ratio? how bright in terms of nits?)

I assume it will have a DVI, don't know about an express card.
What exactly is a swappable drive? just an external harddisk?

Means you can take the optical drive out and replace with a battery, traveller's frame for weight considerations, or a hard drive.

Just like SRD said, the v1j will be more similar to the v6j (thin and light 15 inch). While the W1j will be more like the intermediary to the w2j / w3j.

Now, because the w1j is not comming to the United States, will it be available in the netherlands? Or only asia? That might be a point of concern, if you might not be able to buy it at all.

Other than that, check out the lastest ASUS CeBit pictures, to get a better idea of what they look like.

MSI 1039 seems to be the only other worth while equivelent to Asus' line up.
Don't forget that Asus also has the A6 series that also uses the same card.
I do believe Clevo will also have a 15.4 with the similar card (if not already)

noone really lists the screen in nits or contrast ratio. The only way to find the contrast ratio of laptops is to find the actually LCD part number and get it from the companys website or something. lcds are around 250 nits i would guess.

Oh man that W1J is going to be sick.

I was in the market for the W1A was it? Too bad it was EOL when I tried ordering it, I SO would've bought one even though it was aging, because the chassis is just spectacular~!!!!

Now they're updating it with new hardware. Oh my.

    I think I just... n/m

While i like the W1j since i have a W2V the w series is awsome. I still think the v1j is the thing to get since its so much lighter and has the similar build.
