So I was looking for more information on the V1S and found one website is already taking pre-orders for around 1,800.
http://www.excaliberpc.com/ASUS_V1S-A1_Intel_Core_2_Duo_T7500/partinfo-id-580877.html
Anyways, I have a few questions...as I am pretty interested in this unit.
1. Do you think that will be the cost of the unit...or with there be better deals?
2. Do you think this laptop will last 3 or 4 years as I intend to buy it for graduate school?
3. I have played with the g1s, and think it is a great computer hardware wise..i however felt the built was not up to par, mainly in the built of the screen. There was definitely some flex in the screen, and it was fairly easy to produce ripples. Do you feel the V1s will have a similar or better build?
4. My other option at this point is the dell 1520, do you feel the price difference is worth it for the V1S...or probably not really? I already like the slimmer, lighter look of this laptop which will be a lot better for traveling. But do you feel the build quality, and hardware quality will justify buying it over the dell?
5. I have never bought anything from asus...do they have good customer support, warranties?
6. Where is the best place to purchase this computer?
Thank you in advance for answering my questions. It is frustrating not being able to find an ideal laptop so close to school starting. The dell 1520 comes closest but its sooo huge, and reviewers have said the screen is grainy, and the hardware is somewhat crippled. Hoping the V1S will take care of these problems.

Thanks for the info. can anyone answer the rest of my questions?
I also have another question to add.
How is asus and their LCDs? Specifically do they arrive with a lot of dead pixels? This is something that has always haunted me. getting a new computer with dead pixels. -
Asus usually uses top of the line stuff....you can expect it in the V series always. their LCDs are amazing...and they come with a zero bright dot warranty. you don't need to worry about dead pixels =]
-
I'm guessing the 8600gt will be ddr2?
-
I hope not...might as well just put in a 8600 GS if they are gonna make it DDR2 =/
-
well, the price reflects ddr2...plus it wouldnt make any marketing sense if the v1 is graphically faster that the g1s...
-
you are sorta right about not making sense marketing wise. Though it wouldnt be faster...if anything the same. However I would be happy with the dd2 since it will mean less heat, and thus longer lifespan. Even still I probably would prefer the ddr3 when it comes down to it. You never know...apple does it with the macbook pro, and thats a thin and light notebook too. Either way though, the V1s has the NVIDIA 8600GT 512MB..which is already better than the 256 offered by dell. Do not know if this actually means anything performance wise however.
-
The performance boost between 512 and 256 is negligible at best, maybe one or two hundred 3dmark06 points. The MBP is not quite the same as the G1s, the G1s is clocked higher (Faster) And DDR3 uses less energy than DDR2 and outputs less heat. I would expect Asus to put in lower clocked DDR3 into the V1s, Even if it is DDR2 I still wouldnt mind, Its a awesome looking notebook, Everything Ive been waiting for. On a side note I would really recomend ExcaliburPC Ive been talking to them today and they are fantastic in their customer service. Its a far cry from what ive gotten from dell, Theyve made every effort to accommodate me as a Non US purchaser which is pretty uncommon.
-
Thanks for everyones replies. I do feel as though the v1s pretty much fits the bill in every department, (performance, looks, weight, build, and price) but the only thing keeping me from 100% taking the plunge (when its released) is this problem some reviewers have had with the LCD screen in the V1jp. Apparently there is the potential for quite a bit of flex and rippleage when pressed. This to me is probably something I wont be able to deal with too well if true. If this problem is fixed or made better then I am sold..if not then unfortunately the T61p/hp8510p is looking like a better option.

How often are you planning to press on your screen when its in use?.

According to this website the V1S's GFX memory is DDR3. Bear in mind that this is for the UK (I've heard rumors that the VxS specs vary country to country).
(UPDATE: there are a few discrepancies on that page, so take the specs with a very large pinch of salt)
Also, anyone know what the heck a 'travel drawer' is? According to that website the V1S weight is "2.7 kg (with travel drawer)". -
The internal parts are the same AFAIK (Except things like CPU/HDD/RAM)
EDIT : And the traveler's drawer is an empty drawer than can be put in the optical drive bay after removing the optical drive - Weight with the Traveler's drawer means weight without the optical drive. -
That website states 8600M, That could just as easily be the 8600GS, Also it has 256mb Vram, So it might not be the same as the 512mb model even if it is the GT version, Also Even if it states DDR3, It could still be DDR2 unfortunately, Look what happened with the dell 1520. TBH I dont think it matters a huge amount its a few hundred points at best and if your buying this solely as a gaming machine you should probally look at the G1S.

Oh, and thanks mujtaba for clearing that up for me.

this questions is directed at the aussies in the forum, how much do you guys think the V1S will be in Australia, intial and leveled out price??
-
Sheldon You know my views, As in the US its priced at the same price as the G1s, I would say About 3195, Though Ive only been able to find the G1S at one place so far. Excalibur PC has it for $1850 USD with $107 shipping to Australia (They may be able to do you a deal on the postage, You would have to check) this brings it to a total of $1957 USD, The ANZ bank is offering 87.50 US cents to the dollar which brings it to $2236 AUD. If your lucky enough to avoid customs thats all you will pay, If your unlucky you will pay $250 more (10% + $50 processing fee) so $2586. The V1s comes with a international warranty and has several repair centres in Australia.

On this web site they spect the v1s-a1 the same as the g1s-a2. If it is how it realy is, then the v1s-a1 is going to be a bomb, solid and fast
-
HAHA...no matt I do not press on the screens all the time. I am just worried about it withstanding carrying back and forth to school. You think it will be better built than the g1s?
-
How about price in Europe? Anyone knows...?
-
I just looked on the asus site....apparently all their new models will be out by late august...... http://usa.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=7936 ? I hope this is not the case with the V1s....that is a long wait.
-
Now this V1S looks really nice. What sort of effort did ExCaliberPC made to you as a Non US purchaser? -
Answered far to many of my questions
. I returned my Dell 1520, I was disgusted with the way they treated me, And they stuffed up my order.
ExcaliburPC offered me very cheap shipping, They offered me a tonne of payment options that most other companies dont, And they have been very helpful in answering all my questions and getting me the best price. You should go to bed though >.> Reading forums at 3:20 AM. I gave you some rep for being a newbie.
-
Thanks matt_h1, though I don't know what 'rep' is. =)
Sounds like a good place to order V1S.
Anyway, I will need to cancel my Dell order first, which I will probably do tomorrow. Off to bed, night. -
Rep is the little block next to the bit that says "Rep Power" basically people give you rep for helping them or making good posts, the more rep you have the more experienced people assume you are. And Yes they have been very good ^^.
