i heard that the A/F have the worst build quality and the V have the best and they use the best available materials so I'm afraid that I'll have problems with the F8S

    thanks.

Deciding between the V2Sv and the F8Sv will be tough for many, but I think most will go for the F8Sv. Moreover, I do not think the build quality of the F8Sv will be bad; it is just that the build quality of the V2Sv will be absolutely amazing (few notebooks will be comparable).

Actually, a small part of me hopes that everyone will favour the F8Sv and that the V2Sv will be a total failure, because really, if the F8 is cheaper, the V2 will not stand a chance. Hopefully, Asus will learn from this failure and, although the V2 comes close, finally provide a true replacement for the W3J for which we have all been waiting.

ill prefer the v2, but if i recall correctly, there was still rippling on the screen, and significant flex on the v2 but not on the v1. i wish they kept making the w3...

personally the v2sv looks a ton better than the f8...and the 8600gs can be OC'ed to 8600gt ranges if the gs uses GDDR3 =]
if price is not too much different, i think i'm going to buy the v2

The V2 also has a docking station option, spill proof keyboard, made from carbon fibre and magnesium composites.

Hmm... Doesn't the F8Sv have an integrated TV tuner?

Anyhow, the choice for me depends on which one is lighter and smaller, in which the V2Sv wins. I'd also expect the F8Sv to cost significantly less, so another possibility for me is an F8Sv + EEE. ^_^

Arrgg... too bad there's no news on their release. I'm guessing the end of August-September-ish is a safe bet.

i've been trying to find the link for the thread, but can't right now.
but i believe someone did OC their 8600GS to get the same 3Dmark score as a stock 8600GT.

There is this thread where they compared the G1S 8600M GT with the F3SV-B1 8600M GS. From what I gather, the GT scored of 3630 while the OC'ed GS scored 2879 on 3DMark06; still off by quite a bit, plus the GT can be OC'ed as well.

Even more interesting: this thread on another forum states that a GS with 3GB of RAM outperforms a GT with 2GB of RAM. I don't know how true it this is though.

somehow i don't think that it's true. if it was...my guess would be it has something to do with the turbocache. that or the GS was overclocked and the GT was underclocked...

    After reading that thread.
    and especially
i think the F8Sv is GDDR2 so it will be as fast as a acer 5920 GPU and will not equal the G1S so my choice will be the V2Sv and i hope it will be GDDR3.

    thanks guys.

Its a pretty difficult decision...The F8Sv is blazingly fast, but the V2S is still competent and much more durable to boot. I like the styling of the F8 better (the hinge is the one that does it for me...brings back memories of the W3), but the V2 has business class features like spill proof keyboard and docking station (dunno if these will make any difference for me). The size and weight are similar enough to each other that it doesn't make much of a difference (F8 is 5.3lbs, V2 is 5.1lbs...minimal at best).

For me, its whichever one is cheapest. The V2s will likely keep the $1800 price point of its V2J and W3J predecessors; I think the max the F8 can be priced at is $1700; hopefully it will keep the $1600 price of the A8Js. So its the F8 for me. (Why am I the only one who voted for the F8?)

The V2S is also 4.3lbs or so and I'm guessing the F8 will be 5.4lbs like its predecessor. Can anyone confirm that for the F8?

it all goes into what you're looking for i guess. durability vs price. excalibur has the v2s for preorder at $1750, not too bad at all :)

since i'm a college student and i don't game much (plus i already have a decent gaming rig) i'm going to go for the v2s

If I were to choose between the two, I'd go with the V2s, partially because it looks absolutely stunning :D . From all the benchmarks/ingame results, the GS still seems to be a capable card, so I'm fine with that. Plus all the extras you get, better build, spill proof keyboard (knowing my clumsiness, no doubt that might come in handy), etc are quite desirable.

I like the design of the F8, but I would've liked it to be one solid color, the silver palmrests look out of place.

For the non to very casual gamer, the V2Sv seems like the likely winner I imagine since I don't need a top of the line video card?

Also, what other features will the F8Sv have that the V2Sv doesn't currently have? Somebody mentioned TV tuner?

F8S does not have HDMI, which I find slightly disappointing, since it (seemingly) has every other port under the sun, and 5 USB ports.

Yep. It was a great feature on the W3, but the V2 was supposed to have it, and when the units came for shipping, they didn't have it. Even the preproduction review models that the resellers got had it, but the production ones didn't. No idea whether the updated V2 will have it or not.

    AFIAK, a GDDR2 8600GS performs like a GDDR3 8400GT and a GDDR2 8600GT performs like GDDR3 8600GS - its confusing, and its bad of Nvidia to allow this, IMO.

Now, if rumored price points of new v series are collect, then I am afraid it will use GDDR2 - otherwise new V1 would destroy ASUS's own G1S (also, they may want to keep room for future Lambo). F8SV will most certainly use GDDR2, but in the end, we cannot tell for certain until someone get a hand on one.

    Awwwww . . . . how I wish the V2Sv wouldn't be overpriced in Singapore T-T . . . . ..

I'd gladly consider it over the F8 despite the GPU difference.
    I reckon the 8600gs is enough for me . . . . but if the price stays still at $3999SGD (~$2600US), I think I'll have to consider either the V1s or F8Sv instead . . . . T______T

supposedly the f8 is going to be mass produced early september and be available in limited quantities end of august. that's what the ASUS rep told my cousin.
the price for the f8 should be cheaper than the g1s. i'd say look in the ballpark of $1500-1600.

The general consensus is that the F8 is expected to be August / September. Most people seem to be getting their hopes up for mid-August, though. But if the following is true...
... then a lot of people may be dissapointed.

Sorry if I was misleading, but no, it's not available yet . . .

I was assuming it will cost as much as the V2Je when it first came out . . . I was looking a lot at http://sls.vr-zone.com/ , which I saw a few SR refreshed models (e.g. G1s, G2s, etc.) being the same price as their predecessors .. . (btw, they dropped the price for the G1p & G2p by like $SGD200)

p.s. Still don't get it why the V2j is priced so much more than the V1j there, since in USA it's even cheaper . . .

We will be sure after they announced by ASUS.

For some people, the potential to use a docking station may also be a reason to go for the V2S.

(I'm guessing docking stations have to be bought separately?)
