    Hi,

I have a question about Intel PROSet/Wireless on V6 or W3. I realized that “signal quality” seems to drop possibly due to no activities ? My router is almost next to my notebook and when I first switch wireless on the signal is “excellent” but soon drops to “good”. The speed shows as “11.0Mbps” all the time. Is that normal behavior ? Should I be using Windows XP wireless console instead ? Which one is better ? Thanks !

XP's wifi app is ok... I usually tell customers if they don't know wifi, use the XP ute because we can't get into wifi setups over the phone (people get paid very well to set up wifi... because an idiot just can't set it up properly) .......

I can help a bit. Just answer some of the following:

    1. What make, model, format... b; b/g; a/b/g; etc.. router do you have?

    2. When and where did you buy it (say a bestbuy could have a router on the floor for 6 months.. so the firmware could be much older even if you bought it yesterday)

    3. What version of pro/set are you running... if you're running v.9 ... give me all of the digits after that.

It would be as simple as a router firmware flash or a newer version of pro/set .... it's really got to be one or the other... the wifi cards just don't break and they just work.

    Thanks,
    Justin

It's your newest wifi card that's the problem......

    1. you're only ever going to show 11mb/s anyway with "B" .. not a problem unless you have like a T1 line running into your house and even then... unless your internet speeds are greater than 11mb, you don't have to worry about that being slow for that...... it's only slow for transfers between computers.

    2. look on linksys' site and get the newest firmware they have for that model.... UPGRADE it regardless.

    3. Check Asus' download page, or go to intel and I think look for 9.04 or higher....

I think it's the pro/set since if the firmware for the router needed to be upgraded you'd probably never even get connected.... but it can't hurt to upgrade that as well.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,
    Justin

    Thanks Justin,

1.It’s a Linksys BEFW11S4 V2/V3 (latest Firmware: 1.45.10) “b” type (bought it about 2 years ago and it’s on the floor)
    2.It’s Intel PROSet 9.0.1.0
I have two other notebooks: a Vaio and Apple G4 all showing “excellent” signal, but strangely enough the Windows XP wireless on my V6 always shows “excellent”. So, I thought maybe Intel one drops the signal to preserve energy or when it’s less active….? When I use network a lot signal seems to pick up a bit.

    Hi,
I had the same problem. But I can tell you it's not a problem of the intel wireless card. It's the combination with the linksys router. I had the Linksys WAG54G and signal was low when I was beside the router. I bought a new router (no Linksys) and now the signal is excellent all the time...
When you search with google you find a lot of problems with linksys routers and intel wireless card 2200BG

Thanks a lot, I'll give it a try.
Anyway,it's not a big deal because the speed doesn't change, only the signal quality. On top of that XP wireless always shows signal as "excellent".

Yeah, you're right... most of the time though there has been a firmware update to take care of it. With the WAG54G ... I know there was a firmware to take care of it because I have one of those at home.

    Thanks,
    Justin
