V6J Portable or not?

Hi,

What are your thoughts on the V6J. It's very thin and fairly light, but would you class it as portable?

I have about a 15 min walk to work everyday, would that and the charger be too heavy?

It's indeed very portable, however, I'd suggest you to purchase a good quality bag to carry it in.

Since it's so light (as light as smaller screen models), it shouldn't be tough to carry around. The only caveat is the larger screen translates to a larger footprint and larger overall dimensions (an issue when flying...etc) but I don't see that being a problem for you.

 

Its light, but u need large bag

 

just get a sleeve that fits the laptop and charger. it will stay very thin. I think its a very easy notebook to carry around unless you have are abnormaly weak.

 

lightest, thinnest, and most sexy 15" notebook i have ever seen in my life. Superb one of a kind design.

Now i've got to decided between the V6J and the Sony SZ.

Only bad thing about Asus is support. The only support i'll need is hardware support if something gives up .........im an I.T techy.

 

I ll back asus over sony support any day in the states. Sony got nothing on them. Dunno overseas however. I would say asus support in the states is above and beyond any other namebrand when it comes to home support. Now if they only offered business class warranty then they would be the best.

 

I do like the fact Asus offer 2 years on their notebooks. But then the Sony is 13.3" and might be better suited for me?

If you guys are happy with the V6J for portability then it might be fine for me. Only bad side is in the UK there is nowhere for me to look at the machine before purchase. A lot of money to part with without even seeing it.

 

It's very portable, its much lighter then it seems!

 

The Asus has the Zero Bright Dot policy which, IMHO, kicks serious tail!

 

The v6j is very portable of course the sony sz is more so though. but the asus will definatly have a better build quality.

 

What kind of battery life can i expect from the V6j?

 

3-4 hours.

 

Can anyone post pitures with something like a mouse or something that you could compare the size with?

I'd be very grateful as size is my only doubt now.

No camera with me ATM, but here's something to consider

 

I believe my Z70Va is bigger than the V6Va so I can say it should be portable enough considering I carry my Z70Va with me almost everyday and I'm fine with it.

It is kinda large, but not very heavy. With some textbooks it can be bothersome, but not a deal breaker. Go for it, because of the higher resolution screens that Asus offers I'd say it beats out Sony. This guy had a sony next to me in the library, beautiful machine, but dang ****py resolution made his screen look so small. His start menu button was almost as wide as my start menu button and my quick launch menu together, and I have it adjusted for 5 icons.

Whoa. I'm guessing his screen was a WXGA on a 15.4" which is not good enough for me.

I have come to the conclusion that the V6 is just going to be too big for me.

I might consider the W3J but i'm very conserned about the palm rest fading.

I sketched out the V6 on A3 and its going to be a little too big. Shame really as it's a really nice notebook.

Just want to thank all of you who helped me. But it's time to start a thread or get involved in a W3 thread.

My goodness simply beautiful. That screen is great, freakin' tall as heck too, well the resolution with the 4:3 aspect ratio screen makes it look so dang tall, a programmers dream I guess.

Thats a shame one of the nicest pcs in my opinion. your loss. I understand you want smaller. but as ive handled the w3v and the v6va in person the v6va is more portable i think. they are really the same saying one is really more portable than the other doesnt make sence. if you are going to carry a w3j its really the same. now you really should be looking at a different weight class like 4-5lbs maybe a z35 or sony sz.Because you will be dissapointed with the w3j. its the size of the v6j and its to big for u. at least that what i think.

 

Just had a think about my database work on the lappy.

I have folded the A3 paper up to the size of the Sony and it's gonna be too small. LOL! ( i know i jeep chaing my mind )

I'm going with the V6J. That's really it mind made up. Going to place the order at work next week!

Yea, think about it, the V6 compared to any 14" laptop. The V6 is only bigger in footprint by less then an inch(or up to an inch), but its slimmer, thinner, lighter and...better

 

I really gotta thank you guys for all the help you have given me.

I'm sure the 15" is the way to go. When i do DB work it's normally for around 4hrs flat. It'll also help when i programming!!!

Just one more thing......dont think it's really gonna bother me but, whats this issue with the fan and it running all the time?

 

because its so thin..the fan needs to work harder to cool it and like someone earlier mentioned about looking at powerbooks/macbook pro it will have the same hot palmrest issues at those...so go to an apple store and see if its a problem for you

Someone asked you to check out the hot palmrests of the macbook pro, but in my opinion, the v6j does not get as hot as the macbook. Of course, I haven't really done any really intensive work on it yet, but the macbook pro gets awfully hot even just sitting in the store.

 

I've been using my V6j for a few days, so I will add a little. On the portability, I just spend 3 days at the community college for a debate tournament, and was walking around all weekend with the V6j in my messenger-style bag. I could barly notice. It isn't tough to move with at all. The footprint seems large, but it is way better than my old 15.4" monster. Second, the heat. This beast gets warm on the right palm rest, but it isn't hot. Honestly, the biggest annoyance is that the heat might make your palm a little sweaty, then you have to clean the nice looking brushed aluminum (which no picture can do justice to, this computer is just plan too good looking for words or any picture). For the fan - most of the time that it is on, you won't notice. I had 4 people listen when the room was completely silent, and the fan was running (I could feel the air) but none of us could hear it. Its a great computer. You will enjoy it.

i'd love to hear what you think when you get your new V6J, as I am going through the same internal debate as you. I like the V6J, but I'm used to a 4-pound machine (my awesome Fujitsu S6000 series) and am somewhat concerned about the weight of the V6J (even though it is ridiculously light for its screen size and power). I agree with what people are saying about the portability of the V6J vs the W3J--the latter is not "more portable enough" to make it not worth it to go for the 15" screen and the higher quality. So, I'm left more or less decided on the V6J, but with a nagging thought that maybe the Sony SZ160 would be a better choice. Or, waiting until Fujitsu updates the S6000 because my current one has been soooo good to me for so long, but who knows how long that will be (could be several months).

All of which is a longwinded way of saying that I'd like to hear how you feel about the portability of the machine when you get your V6J... unless I get mine first, in which case I'll do the same...

 

I have had a s6000 series and v6 series. I mean the v6 is not in the same class the fujistu is amazing at how light it is. but i will tell you the build of the v6 is way above the fujitsu especially the keyboard.

 

but the v6j screen is much better than the fujitsu i found the sharpness to be very lacking even for a 1024 x768 screen.

 

pavlova i will do that for you. Might take a few weeks as i'll have to go through work to get it. Our supplier will need to get them in for us too.

It's a shame the V6J doesnt come with a built in camera, otherwise my mind would have been made up sooner

I've had a change of heart.

Today after using a 15" Dell Notebook, i have decided that i'd rather go for a wide aspect screen.

So it's either going to be the Asus W3J or the Macbook Pro. It doesnt look like i'll be buying for a month or so now, so if Pavolva if you do get the V6J please let me know how you get on?

 

That makes me laugh. I went from a widescreen to the 15" standard, and I love the standard. Maybe its the higher resolution so I don't really notice, but either way, the V6j makes me way happier than my old hp zt3010us. Good luck with your decision.

 

Actually I kept putting off my decision to get the V6J also because of the widescreen fixation. And I wasn't even coming from a widescreen.
Now that I have the V6J, I love the screen; feels huge and luxurious compared to my old Inspiron. Maybe it's the tiny bezel or the great resolution, the V6J sure looks fantastic.
darrensen: hope you're happy whichever way you decide to go.

 

I went form the 15.4" Z70va to 15" V6va, and I seriously don't mind either. The smaller footprint is awesome, but I don't sacrifice that much estate, in my opinion.

But I know everyone has their own preferences

 

I too am wondering about this. I had a HP Special Edition L2000 and its got a beautiful 14" widescreen. I don't know if I'm going to miss the widescreen aspect if i were to buy the V6J. I know I'm definitely going to like the higher resolution on the V6J tho!

 

Note, if you take a 14" screen, and add some space vertically, it turns into a 15" screen

If anything, going from WXGA, to SXGA(1280x800 to 1400x1050) is better!

 

For all you v6j owners...how is real life battery life? Are you squeezing 4 hours out of it?

Currently i have 3.17hrs with 87% batt remaining on the V6J. Not bad considering i am using all the 4 USBs with quiet office profile. Can easily squeez 4hrs if i switch to battery saving profile and don't use the usbs

About the same, a little over 4 hours if I really try, about 3 hrs, 45 mins under normal usage, exactly what was predicted.

Decided that 15" is fine.

I used a Dell lappy yesterday and i was very happy with the size. As already stated the width is the same it's just the height......and i'd rather have that extra inch.

I'm going to wait to see what the Macbook Pro is like as it's got some good features to it. But on the other hand there's been another Fire with the power supply so i may go with the V6J.

Apple is a great choice if you decide not to play games. I like to play games now and then so Apple will unfortunately not be my choice. If Apple supported XP then I'd have bought one already.

I know the rumours that it does support Windows, but there are still too many problems to give it a try.

 

Well the only game i will play on a notebook is Football Manager 2006. Games Like CCS, Flight Sim etc... will be on my desktop PC.

EDIT: Soon enough someone will get XP or Vista working on a mac faultless.
