Hey all!
Ive been cruising these forums for a while and I just had a couple of questions about the v6.
Is there a vendor that sells the unit with 1 GB of 533 DDR?
Also, I havent really heard much about the unit on these boards. Its not really talked about. Can someone who has a v6 tell me how they feel about it?
Does it get overly hot?
Does it feel like it would last a couple of years?
I really want one since its so damn sexy but im just worried about it overheating or having some weird problems.
Hows the screen btw?
-
The screen is okay. It's not as cool as the Color shine screen on the W3V & W5A. and it's not widescreen. Most people like widescreens because they often watching dvd movies on the fly.
As for your heating issues. since the entire inner surface is made of brushed aluminum (except keyboard and touchpad), it does help a bit for the heat dissapations... It's simliar to the W3V, and the heat also has to do what you are doing. if you're gonna play games all day, then it will heat up, but not anywhere to a point where it shuts down or crash. The brush aluminum actually gives your wrist a cool feeling.
It is a very sexy machine....I agree, If I had the money to buy the V6V, I would.
But I went with the W3V instead because the nice screen and the lighter weight... -
Well I bought a V6V a few weeks ago, and I have no major complaints.
The overall fell of the notebook is nice. It seems solid and well built. So yes, it feels like it would last a couple of years. The ony minor complaint is the keyboard, which isn't as good as my old dell was. It's one of those keyboards, that makes a little sound when pressing the key, and this (for me) gives an impression of a not so robust keyboard. (however the pressure, and "sink-level" of the keys are just perfect).
Like a lot of the Asus machines, the harddrive is placed beneath the right palmrest, and because of this, it gets hotter than the room temperature. It's nothing that bothers me at all.
As for the screen. Well it's nice and bright. It has sufficient viewing angles, and i thinks theres a no-dead/stuck-pixel policy, however I didn't need that, as my screen was fully functioning.
Overall i'm very pleased! Great laptop... -

Technically you'll void your warranty if you buy the unit with anything else installed. We and everyone else should only offer ram and hard drive options as "accessories". If you buy and ram, even if it's from the dealer...... install it yourself. You'll keep your warranty and that's something that you shouldn't sacrifice.

I saw on the proportable website that the memory that comes is 400 mhz ddr2.
why doesnt it come with 533?
thats really odd.
So basically i have to buy another 2 sticks of 533 512mb to get a correct 1gb dual channel setup?
that kinda blows, as I'll be wasting my money on some extra memory that I wont even use.
Also, is there any vendor that offers any educational discounts?
Im going to UC San Diego after my summer break. -
There's quite a few with educational discounts. I got mine from Geared2Play.com. They've got discounts for students, firefighters, military, etc. There's a cash discount too, if you're paying check or COD- it can be combined too! Also if you write a review on it, you'll get your shipping cost refunded. Their prices are pretty good to begin with, and plus all those discounts.

Cash discounts of 2% are something I think everyone offers, including us. -

Does anyone know the size/weight difference between the v6 and the z70?
ProPortable: Are people buying the v6 or are they buying more z70s and W3s? -
The V6V is listed at 5.73 lbs on the Asus website which is prebuilt. And the Z70V is listed at 5.6lbs without optical. So I think the V6V is overall lighter, it's also thinner too.

That's off in the wrong direction I think... the V6 isn't that heavy. The Z70 (which is the M6 series) ....... weighs 6 pounds and is considerably lighter than the Z71v which is 6.6 pounds. The W3 which plenty of people in here have weighed comes in at just a bit under 5.5 pounds...... I haven't put the V6 on a scale, but I know that the V6 is just about equal to the W3 when the optical drive is in the W3..
I'd say that Z70 is at LEAST a 1/2 pound heavier than the V6v... I'd venture to bet more though. -
Ok so how many people in this board are using a V6V?
The only thing I dont understand is why so many people are getting the W3 and not the V6. The W3 has a pretty low-resolution screen. (1280x768) How do the two compare? Also, how do they compare with hte z70v.
Sorry for the many redundant questions, I'm just having a lot of trouble deciding which pc I want. -
I am anxiously awaiting a v6v this coming Monday!!!
Tell you more when I get it.

All 3 are nice machines, so its a problem of too much choice.
The V6V and W3V are small form factor notebooks.
*The V6V is a definitive "thin & light" & you get a high res 15" screen. Awesome design, but pricey.
*The W3V is smaller in size (but about the same weight), 14" widescreen glossy. Also quite pricey. Tends to get hot.
*The Z70V / M6V is like a V6V without the extra effort gone in to the "thin & light" form factor. Its also cheaper because of it. Screen is ~ same as the V6V I think.
I'd say if you can afford the V6V over the M6V, and need the portability that comes with the lower weight, then get it.
If you would prefer something smaller again for travelling with (14"w is smaller in overall size) then get the W3V.
As with all laptop purchases it quickly becomes a tradeoff in performance, portability & price. -
If I had the cash, I'd definitely go for the V6V... it's design is very appealing and more professional looking. I'm not saying the Z70 is ugly... I have the M6 (same chassis) and I like it and all... but it can't hold a candle up to the beauty of the V6V! Wow it's a looker.
The main reason people go for the W3 over the V6 is probably the portability (the footprint of the notebook is smaller than that of the V6, of course) and because it has a glossy screen... -
Proportable,
If I buy a 512MB stick as an accessory for a V6, will the stick you guys sell make the dual channel work?
Is it the same memory as Asus uses for the stock notebooks? -
I got my V6V!!
Been playing with it all afternoon. I'm currently downloading some windows updates on it. Back on my ole trusty Sony here.
So far, I love the V6. Beatiful screen. Beautiful computer!
Only thing I've noticed thus far is that on AC the right hand rest does seem a bit warm. Hoping to see how that progresses. Of course it was also frickin 95 degrees in the room I was playing with it. It was not an issue at normal room temperature (which I got once I went in the air conditioned office).
Yah! I got my :asus: -
Note that the W3V is an 8x DVD burner, the V6V 2x. The W3V also has a $200 rebate right now :budget:
Wonder if the V6V has the same sound problems mentioned by some with the W3V? -
top to continue discussion ... seemed interesting to many
-
I haven't seen the thread about the V3W's sound problems.
As far as sound goes for the V6V, it's "what you could expect" to "above average".
There's no base, but no notebooks have that. (ok, some have "built in subwoofer")...
The sound is clear, and as loud as I need. It's very "concentrated", so if you're listening to music, while not sitting at your notebook, the loudness may become a problem. (good/bad however you look at it) I haven't had any distubances, distortion of any sort (yet)... -
yeah i dont really care about the speakers on the notebook coz i wont really use them much. ive got a pair of badass headphones. I just hope the output to the jack is decent

Any V6V owner find their wifi disconnects all the time?
I connect it to my DLink wireless B router, but it keeps disconnecting every 20 seconds or so. -
I have a v6v and a Dlink b router also (714p+ to be exact).
I haven't had any problems. Is the Norton software screwing up up maybe?
How's your signal strength?
We had an issue like this with a Dell laptop at one time. I think it turned out to be a distance problem. An amplifier took care of that problem. -
I'm using 714P+ as well!
I tried disabling norton, still won't do.
I'm guessing it's my router's problem. I tried connecting to my neighbor's wireless connection (hehe, just for testing) and it worked perfectly. They're using a linksys router though.
Sometimes it even said my router is not in range, but I'm right next to it.
