I heard the V6J has an inferior screen. Is this true? That, along with an inferior GPU, makes me wonder why pay more for a newer V6J when I could have a V6Va that provides more, for less. Am I missing something?
-
-
Well, pretty much the Core Duo, and.....uhh, thats about it.
The V6va is also in limited stock as well, and yes, the IPS SXGA+ screen = amazing. -

Inferior yes..... but it's like a Ferrari 360 is inferior to an Enzo..... It's till a great screen and likely the best most people will ever have..... but the screen on the V6va would blow that away.
But the comment of the V6va being in limited stock..... only 300 came over to North America in December and they were basically gone by February.... if you can still find someone who has one, you're lucky.
I prefer the V6va to the V6j as well - mainly graphics wise, the reason the nvidia isn't as good as the ATI that was in the V6va is because the nvidia's run a bit warmer and Asus can't run the same level of ati and nvidia in all of their laptops... especially the super thin models. -
I would love a v6va if it was only 14". It seems to be in stock at both Newegg gand ZipZoomFly. Oh why can't they make a 14" one?
-
heh sounds like you want a t60 with a glossy screen
-
I wish they make a new V6 with Merom and IPS screen so I have an upgrade option. I doubt if I am going to be happy with V6J screen.
I travel a lot with my V6Va. Everytime I turn it on, everyone in the room always comments about the screen. Everyone else's notebooks are pale in comparison. -
is the V6Va screen just better at viewing angles or is it brighter/sharper as well?
-
I found it brighter, sharper, and more vivid then the A8jm/W3j/W2/Acer 5672/8205 when I brought it to MileStonePC a few months back.
Not only that, the viewing angles are godly, pretty much bad viewing angles are non existant. Of course, it exists when its at 5 degrees, but I mean at regular angles, I never need to adjust the LCD when I turn on the notebook, no matter if the lid was ever closed. -
This is part of what makes laptop shopping so difficult remotely. It is hard to get exact specs. For instance if you go to the Asus site and check specs for the display, they will both say 15" SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) for both the V6J and V6Va. Both also have the zero dot policy (so I assume higher quality level). So how in the world is a consumer supposed to know that the V6Va has a better display than the V6J? Most of the sites selling Asus gear just repeat the Asus specs and don't add anything either so not much additional info.
You have to try and sift through hundreds of posts (many contradictory) to try and get a feel for the laptop.
Screen quality is VERY important to me as I use it for photo editing and also meeting with clients and giving presentations. So I need a color accurate screen that has a wide viewing angle and is extra bright. I'm leaning towards the W3J or perhaps the V1J. Now how am I supposed to know which one of these has the best display? This can be frustrating sometimes.
Sorry for the rant. -
Thus ASUS is an enthusiast brand, not just "Hey dad, I need a laptop so get me this Dell/HP/Acer/etc."
Most users here already have a large info base by default, and even if they don't, by asking questions, reading threads and searching the forum(Yes, the search button = the useful!), they gain an unmatched database of information. -
Sometimes a problem is info overload. I've searched and searched and you get results about the W3J from being "best display I've seen" to "grainy and dissappointed"
What's a guy to think. It also gets annoying when people keep saying try a search and assume a user hasn't already tried to search. I just wish the vendors and Asus would list things like IPS screen or other type... They don't make it easy. -
the v6j is the way to go over the v6v because not only does it already have dual core but now some merchant has v6j along with w3j and couple other models able to be upgraded to core 2 duo! which is what ppl have been dreaming about/asking for , for some time
also as far as the ips screen of the v6v, supposedly you can buy the part separately fairly cheap even from asus nad put it on your v6j! there is a whole thread about it
that leaves the vid card which supposedly slight better on the v6va compared to the v6j but oh well.
btw ram and hd is upgradeable on the v6j at least by the merchant i'm thinking of getting it from.
problem is its tough for the v6j even with upgrades to compete with the power/features for the price of a competing dell or hp -
the ips screen on asus' retail site was $350 i believe. there are some on ebay for 99 XD.
-
don't buy it off ebay..those likely are nonips for that price..quatre..i don't know about you but i'd be a bit wary about putting in 400 worth of lcd myself since it'd be my first time doing it..im thinking of upgrading my w3j's screen in a couple years along with dropping in a merom..but only after warranty is over..right now..since the novelty has worn off on the x1600..i sometimes think i may have had a better use for the ips screen and higher res..trust me the difference in processor and dual core1/2 is not huge in real world use
-
bottom line why would you get a v6va that doesnt even have a yonah core duo processor and can't be upgraded to th at let alone core 2, just for the ips screen.
the ips screen which can be put on the v6j. so get a v6j and get the ips screen for it.
vid card better on the v6va? maybe but not that much. you dont really get a v6j for gaming though anyway.
and you wont be gaming much on a v6va with that cpu. -
Bottom line why would you NOT get a v6va over the v6j?
1. The difference between core duo and core solo isn't day and night. The difference between Dothan and core solo is only minor. 99% of people won't notice the difference. Most people don't multitask to the extent where two cores are needed. The hard drive will be the main bottleneck. I haven't noticed much of a CPU difference since my old athlon t-bird. Most programs will access the hard drive and any dual core system will slow to a crawl if the HD is getting a hard beating. Merom, as far as most websites are concerned, is nothing but a transitional chip hastened in with hype for more money of course. It is more or less identical in performance to Yonah and its potential won't be realized until the next chipset upgrade, which won't be until at least a year, so v6j upgradability is completely mute. Expect the next v6xxxx if you want something that will actually make a difference.
2. V6va not for gaming? There is something called the V6v which doesn't have a video card that is NOT for gaming. This IS for gaming. The IPS screen is hands down one of the best, if not the best, lcd you will find on a laptop. People talk about increasing AA/AF and turning on HDR but all they have is a sh*tty tn+film panel with poor contrast/saturation/brightness, etc. The IPS isn't a slight increase, it is a night and day increase. Take my word for it. I've been through three laptops already in the past year JUST because of the screens.
3. You are very misinformed if you think the CPU matters that much in gaming. The GPU is usually the limiting factor. You can have the fastest CPU in the world and still crawl in Oblivion. Most if not all games that the x700/7400 will run won't ever be utilizing the CPU to 100% so this point is also retarded. Dual core doesn't do much for gaming. Most games are single threaded.
4. The v6va is cheaper and it is running on very limited quantities so if you can get it, get it now before it is too late. As people have said before, this notebook was a limited release. You get to feel "special".
5. The V6va has better battery life, and I mean at least 45 minutes or more. I have read enough reviews where even dual core laptops with integrated graphics only got 3:30 with brightness down and wireless turned off.
7. The IPS screen is EVERYTHING! You have to realize how slow the notebook world is and how incremental everything has been. Chassis haven't really changed. Some have gotten worse. (Toshiba) Keyboards go up and down. Memory is in a stalemate. Hard drives are "slowly" getting faster. Optical drives are a mixed bag. (The cd/dvd drive on my 3 year old toshiba will PWNZ any current drive, even current PC drives by the likes of LiteON and NEC, at reading damaged/badly burned dvds and cds). Graphics are the only thing really going up at a decent pace. And considering the 7400/x700 are pretty close, with the x700 being slightly better, the only thing left that isn't just part of the same old same old and that you can actually see a difference is the SCREEN. It is THE MOST noticeable part of your laptop (aside from the chassis) and it will ultimately determine your affinity toward your notebook because you will be staring at it day in and day out.
Sorry if I offended anyone. I am probably stating the obvious and reiterating a whole lot of what people have already said. It is 4:30AM, I am both sleepy and bored, and I find the need to defend my v6va wholeheartedly and hopefully without bias. However, I don't think there was too much bias as I am usually very critical of my laptops and am the first to diss something about them (ask my roommate). -
v6va isn't Vista compatible or upgradeable to merom.
again, if the screen is everything, then i can get the v6va ips screen and have it put on my v6j.
there is no other reason even according to your explanation to get v6va over v6j -
Well you got me thinking and screen is probably thee most important thing to me on laptops and even cell phones, pdas etc.
You make it sound so rare and hard to get and one would be so lucky to get one still, but several merchants have it including Newegg for one of the best prices.
I also found it for even lower $1340
at that price its probably worth just getting for now, even to get another asus laptop like the v1j when that finally comes out.
I guess at that price if it is real and site is legit merchant and all, it should be a no brainer over the lowest price i can find for the v6j of $1727 which is a great price for the $1900 v6j but nothing like $1340 for a v6va.
its just only neweggs listing for 1574 states IPS. i'd be wary about the other one having switched the screen or something, who knows.
Further as much as the last guy wanted to rant about "why wouldn't you get a v6va over v6j"
all he really end up saying in all of that is that the screen is the best and night and day difference.
BUt i've seen ppl say try out the screen on the v6j, it will prob be the best you've ever had.
Plus in the end you CAN get the ips screen for the v6j.
You CANNOT get a yonah core duo or merom c2d cpu for the v6va and therefore i dont think it is even Vista compatible.
i mean if that one low price is true with ips intact its prob worth it but I am just really wary of choosing a v6va with dated cpu over a v6j which is more future proof especially wth its ability to be upgraded.
what other differences are there, thats it then right.
being i can get the ips screen on v6j and can't upgrade v6va, i just can't seem to justify it
seems like you just have v6va bias owners in here ranting on how v6va is better and special but in the end its just th e screen which for the 10th time, you can get for the v6j. -
i think that site with the v6va for 1340 might be a scam though, heh.
-
Please explain why a V6Va cannot be upgraded to Vista. The X700 in it should be adaguate for aero. Vista will also run just fine on a Pentium M.
-
i dunno that is what I thought and guess i should have put a question mark at the end because i was kind of asking.
So none of you in here can think of any reason to get teh v6j over the v6va? -
MilestonePC.com Company Representative
If some users fully concern to take a IPS screen, just let them go ahead to choose this model because IPS screen is not available for all the models. Even though a previous or discontinue models can support vista as long as all the drivers can be released by manufacturer or Windows built in it.
Cheers -
screen isn't that impressive on the v6j as i thought it would be. doesn't seem much if any beter then my dads hp zd8000 wxga. its glossy but lower res then the v6j but yeah not supe impressed with the v6j screen like i thought i would be.
prob not worth paying 375 for an ips screen part for possibly only slight improvement and allowing less privacy from onlookers in public places due to increased viewing angles.
