I've been looking at the VM x20 at Circuit City, but can't make up my mind. Could someone give me some better information about these two models? Is the x25 worth the $300 price difference, or should I stick with the cheaper x20?
VM Notemagix X20:
Intel core 2 duo
2.40GHz
667MHz bus speed
2GB DDR2 SDRAM
160GB 5400RPM
$1,599.99

VM Notemagix X25
Intel core 2 duo
2.66GHz
667MHz bus speed
2GB DDR2 SDRAM
200GB 7200RPM

I'll say yeah, its worth the price difference, the x20 should be fine though. Your looking at a C2D e6600 with a 160GB 5400RPM HDD which is a decent CPU (that can be OCed using Turbo Gear) with a cooler running HDD vs e6700 which is slightly faster without the OC but can be matched by the e6600 (they'll OC to the same max) and a slightly bigger, faster, yet also hotter HDD (you'll feel it under your left palm).

Thanks for your input, I need the reassurance. I've never bought a laptop before.

Definitely not, the e6700 faster speed has a negligible impact on performance compared to its cost. Also I prefer 5400s because 7200s are overrated in my opinion, most offer little to no speed increase over quality 5400s. 5400s usually draw less battery power, are cooler, and sometimes quieter also. The price increase is reasonable for the hd as 7200s are expensive and the there is a extra 40 gigs. However I still don't like th epricing of 5400s vs 7200s.

I am leaning toward the x20, one because I really don't want to wait a full 6 months just so I can afford the high price of the x25. And the HD size difference really isn't an issue, the desktop I have now, got it in 2001, had 120GB ( well, a little less because of Dell's abundance of preloaded software.) I've only used 16 gigs so far.

I didn't say anything bad about the e6600 and infact what I said should favor the x20. I'm happy with my e6700 and am happy with a quiet 7200RPM HDD, infact after 801 my C90s has gotten considerably quieter mostly do to different fan speeds not HDD. I had a 200GB 4200RPM HDD before and that got hot like mofo, RPM doesn't always mean better or cooler. I have a 160GB and currently only have about 10GB free, yeah 40GB mean alot actually (I wanna put Vista on a partition and thats not gonna happen for a while).

With the price difference you can get yourself a much faster 300gb or more 7200 rpm external drive.

If I could have one built to my own specifications I would, but I have no way to afford that. But, ( with the help of my father and his outstanding credit ) I got a Circuit City card. So, I'm limited to that store.

I'd really recommend ordering online due to the ones in store having a FSB of half the ones online (667mhz vs 1066mhz). The C90s was my first laptop purchase as well and I loved the service gentech provided ( http://1toppc.com is website i think). But yeah you will definitely find better deals online than those prices for a C90s. I might've seen a few comparable but not lower prices than gentech around as well. I personally hated trying to shop instore being as I have some compter knowledge. I have talked with the clerk and had this conversation over the summer -
me: what video card does this toshiba have?
clerk: Oh this has the super-fast 7150nvidia card it'll kill everything out there it's so fast it belongs in a desktop.
me: that card's out of date by like 2 years now...
clerk: oh but it's still faster than the others
me: then why don't ALL these laptops have it instead of their brand new 8400s and 8600s?
clerk: Oh well they're cheaper
me: no, they're more expensive...it's clear you don't know anything about computers so I think I'll take my business elsewhere
I wish I could say I was lying....actually it might've been a vaio that had that card but still...ugh...
quick add-on: this store had G1s in stock as well as I think another ensemble type right next to it (both about 200$ more than if I went online) -
lol the 7150 has always sucked and will continue

I was to futureshop on vista's launch and I asked the seller if the X64 DVD was included in home prenium's box. He said WTF IS 64BITS?????

D some funny stories you guys got there. When did Circuit city offer C90? Pretty smart move there but don't know if they're going to make a sale or not.

I got the Notemagix V20. It's a great machine! I love the overall package, with the great customer support and the amazing attachments (I like how you get Windows Vista, a trial of Microsoft Office, and 3dMark06, when you have to pay extra for at 1topcc.com). I bought it and never looked back! They sometimes even have these special deals, where I got this $50 Best Buy Gift Card. Of course, after purchasing the system (with an E6700 and a 5400RPM 160GB hard drive), I tacked on an extra gig of RAM. It's a beautiful thing, baby.
And by the way, the warranty supports any changes you make to the system less of causing damage, which is pretty cool. -
