I have an A8Jm and its about time i visit the service centre in Richmond Hill or Markham, Ontario (I forget where off the top of my head). I have a few problems: broken latch, cracked hinges, loose hinges, loose casing by left speaker. 2/4 of those issues are common among A8Jm users.

I have a few questions about their repair service.

    1) Generally, how long would they take fixing those problems? I am sure they all just require replacement parts.

    2) Is it necessary for me to reformat or back up of HDD before the repair?

Also I seem to be having another problem at the moment. Now when I play a game (in this case, Marvel Ultimate Alliance), my CPU reaches an astonishing 95 degrees! It causes my computer to shut off. I used to play this game for hours last november and december without a hitch. Any idea why this is happening? I have the laptop on a flat hard surface, and my room is chilly. My fan works in overdrive.

I have NHC installed. When I don't run the program, my computer shuts off about 20mins in. When I run the program, I get the warning about the shut down sequence, so I assume it runs in the background regardless. Right now, after 10 mins from playing, my computer leveled to 64 degrees. When I start my computer fresh, it keeps a constant 50-52 degrees on AC/ 37-40 deg battery.

I think this is something the repair centre can take care of.

    1. Don't know.
    2. ASUS service does not take responsibility for data loss during repair, so yes, you should back up your data. However usually the HDD is restored with the exact same data you sent it with.

The heat problem is most likely caused by dust buildup. Check the main sticky, you will find a link to a notebook dust cleanup tutorial written by coriolis, that should take care of your problem.

Otherwise, they will probably clean it up while addressing your other issues, but perhaps it makes good impression if you take it to the center dust-free. :)

Thanks a lot for the dust tip. I picked up a can of air and blew it into the side and bottom fan it it dropped my temp 5-10 degrees. I dont overheat anymore but it does come close.

For those issues, is it recommended that i visit the Asus service centre or my reseller?

    I recommend the service center.

It would probably help more with the temps if you actually opened the laptop and cleaned the fan. But I agree, if you need to go to the service center anyway, let them do it.

About the HDD, I had to contact Asus for a repair, and I was assured that I could remove the HDD before sending in the notebook. Ask them. As long as the problems to be corrected are irrelevant with your harddrive, simply keep it.

PS: For almost every problem, it is usually ASUS's responsibility. The reseller does nothing other than redirect your service request (at least that is what I hear from "my" resellers ;) ).

I just got back from the Asus Service centre. It took them 1 day. I have to say I am impressed. Friendly, cooperative, and efficient. I am especially happy with how my computer is. Its like a got a brand new Asus overnight! No joke.

They fixed the cracked hinges? Were they cracked like my F3J`s?
    [IMG] [IMG]

If this is the case, then hopefully my reseller is accepts the cracks as under warranty...
