    Hello all,

i clean installed vista last night cause i found out my university offers it for free (its Business version)

im currently using an ASUS A8JS where i upgraded to 2 gigs of ram

i also use dual monitors (i hve a samsung syncmaster hooked up)

here's my problem, ive tried hibernating three times now, and all three times the same thing keeps happning

1st time: clicked hibernate, computer shut off, its all good
i closed my lid, and then 1 minute later, my laptop turns back on AUTOMATICALLY!
it says "resuming windows" and resumes back to desktop
this is when my monitors go wonky and all of a sudden my secondary monitor (the syncmaster) is now the primary and the laptop screen is off

2nd time i tried hibernating i didnt close my lid
the laptop went into hibernation and i waited...1 minute later, again, it resumes and turns back on automatically!
this time the monitors were fine though, it just resumed windows

3rd time was the same as the 2nd

so yeah, was just wondering if anyone else was having problems with hibernating in Vista ? i find it kind of weird how my computer will just turn back on like that by itself

anyways, if anyone has a solution it'd be great!

    thanks again
    -cheers

For example an usb device could wake up your computer. Just look for devices that have the ability to wake up the computer in the device manager. For example I can wake my computer just by clicking my usb mouse, but that functionality can also be turned off in the device manager-->mouse properties. Just check every device's properties there.

I have this problem occationally too. I shut the lid to go into hibernate mode and maybe 1 out of 10 times it keeps running and doesn't hibernate.

Are any devices defaulting to wake the a8js up in vista? I certainly didn't set anything to do this, how would I disable all such functions so it will stay hibernated like a bear in Cleveland?

You need a hotfix from microsoft.com

do a search for hibernation problem

happens when you get 2gb ram

I saw that hotfix but it appeared to only be for XP, no?

hibernation seems to be a major problem with all oses....check out the vista hotfixes. there are at least 10 for hibernation/sleep alone. hopefully, one will solve your problem.

I found a "problem" with vista on the a8js. Unless there's an option I couldn't find, the following happens by itself:

    - Windows update is set to check for updates automatically at 3am
    - I put the a8js in hibernate mode before I go to sleep
    - Vista wakes the a8js up at 3am to check for updates (a8js lid still closed)
    - Vista asks me (who is now sleeping) if I want to restart
    - No one is awake to choose No Restart so Vista restarts and plays the trumpet sounds for me, who is now not sleeping

Turning off the Windows startup sound and changing updates to 3pm is a temporary fix, but I didn't realize Windows could wake up the a8js (and me) in this way.

Probably you can turn it off somewhere...

Waking up the computer to do updates is a bit exaggerated from Vista I would say :) Funny...

    Hi!
I have the same problem in may Asus G1.
Every time I have the ethernet cable plugged in the ethernet port the computer restarts when I hibernate.

In XP that does not happen.

Disable all "wake on" events from BIOS.
