I got my Vista Upgrade DVD for my A8JS, I booted it up try to do clean install, and no go. It gives me an error that it cant read from a file on the DVD.

So I tried just upgradeing normally by entering the product key, and same error shows up. I flip the DVD over and look at it under the light, and I see alot of ripple lines through out the burned part of the dvd. it looked like the burned layer melted slightly.

You could always try downloading a copy of Vista from MS and then use your upgrade product key - that might work. Not sure whether you could try returning the DVD to retailer for a replacement.

All vista disks are the same, so if you have another copy just use it, or if a friend has one. I havnt looked but im more than sure there is a way to d/l it off the net.

Heck they even have hacked Vista already so that you can have it for free for the 32bit version. Too bad its not the x64 version :p

well I got an email back from moduslink, and they say they will ship me a new dvd in 3 weeks.

I have legit copies of x86 and x64 Vista Business, i wonder if i can use those dvds, install x64 and use the upgrade cd key for it.

The x86 and x64 copies i have both use same cd key from school. so I wonder if upgrade cdkeys are the same.

The cd key is tied to the specific version of Vista (Basic, Preimum, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate), and can only be used to activate that version alone. It's not a generic key that you can use to activate whichever Vista version you're interested in, as I recall.

I used my x86 vista business dvd copy from school, but entered the asus upgrade cd key, and was able to do clean install and activate. So i guess i dont really need a new dvd, just the cd key is enough.

Right - the key is what activates the Vista OS install regardless of source, whether it is from DVD or download.

As I recall, MS shipped all 4 OS's on the same DVD for production purposes, which is why the key is such an important factor, but that key can still only activate the version it was intended to. And remember, true clean installs in Vista require you to install it twice rather than just once - details are around somewhere.
