Anyone understand how the Vista upgrade process is supposed to work?
I went to the website and to say it makes sense is a bit of an understatement.
Thanks,
Bob

I just went to the link in the little pamphlet that came with the laptop (same as what Osm3um linked above) and Asus is not listed as a vender so I could not proceed with the registration for the upgrade. Did I miss a certificate in the Box? Has anyone managed to register?
-
Tried the same thing but I'm stuck. I couldn't find that "serialized Upgrade Redemption Form" that they are asking for. I don't think it's in the box. And the reseller I bought the laptop from is not listed. So I contacted the reseller and they claim that I should have everything I need to upgrade. I told them about the redemption form but they knew nothing about it. Finally they told me to turn to asus with my questions. That is as far as I've come. I have a feeling that it will take a lot of work to get Vista.
-
I have already put in an online request with Asus for a solution. I will let you know if/when I get a resolution.
-
Glad to hear I am not alone.
Please keep us posted.
Thanks,
Bob -
Just a heads up. I still havn't heard back from Asus since I submitted my request for help on the Asus VIP site. And today the site seems to be down.
I see lots of folks talking about using Vista on your machines. Have you already gotten the express upgrade or are you getting Vista by other means? If you got the express upgrade, please share how you did it. -
There are numerous ways to get legal copies of Vista. Two of which are a Technet+ subscription or an MSDN subscription. NOTE that neither of these give you "free" copies but rather copies to be used in develeopment/testing.
In my case I am using my Technet+ subscription for testing Vista on our network and will be removing it when my real copy gets here.

Osm3um - I wasn't inferring that anyone had gained it by illegal means (and I'm apologize if it was taken that way). I'm aware of subscription methods as well as the corporate release. I guess I really wanted to know if anyone had successfully figured out the express upgrade.

Some sort of clearinghouse is taking care of these upgrades..... so Microsoft doesn't really have much to do with them...... Yet, Asus is teamed up with MS to do the upgrades like most everyone else.... but they won't know much because Microsoft is feeding them information.
I was originally told back on 10/26, that the site to do sign up on would be opening on 12/6..... and then I was told it would be a couple more days after that until Asus would get their name up on the site.. They're trying to limit orders during certian periods. All the information you need to know if on that site though....
All you need:
serial number off your xp sticker
dated sales reciept (10/26 or later)
That's it. -
Asus is finally listed on the vista upgrade page

i'm wondering if i should order Vista 32 or 64 bit edition? I have a w3jp so i can run 64 ver however i'm worried about drivers compatibility. any suggestions? -
Hmm... I have a W3jp too, I'm wondering if there will be backwards compatibility problems with 32bit software =(
-
Well, my response from Asus was direction to call their toll free number. I'm glad to see that they are up on the site so we can register for the upgrade.
64 or 32 - that is the question. I am really hoping that Asus is going to support 64 bit with drivers and utilites. I'm going to wait and see what happens with drivers before I decide which version to request. I believe that we have until March to register with express upgrade.
Has anyone installed the 64 bit version yet on an asus yet? -
I was heavily involved in the XP 64 betas and ran it successfully for all but a few apps. (Side note: I have an XP 64 CD signed by Dave Cutler (and other hardcores)!).
Anyway, I will post my results.

All,
If I have Windows XP Professional, can I select that I have Windows MCE in order to get the Home Premium? Id rather get Home Premium than Business.
Also, with the COA, does it tell MS what edition of XP you have?
And, the date of purchase, is that the date you put your order for the notebook, or the date you receive your notebook? -
The video drivers can be found in the laptop video 2 go web forums.
I ended up with a bunch of unknown devices so I bagged it after a couple of hours.
Video drivers work, wireless worked and touchpad worked. That's as far as I got then I rolled back. As best I can tell the unknown devices can not be fixed. Not sure what they were.

PS I ordered the 64 bit version from the upgrade site anyway. Figure they will get the driver gig fixed eventually. -
Yea, I've pretty much decided that I'm going with the 64 bit. I don't see the point of upgrading to Vista 32 (except to play with and learn). I'm in no hurry and hopefully asus will provide us with 64 bit drivers to give us one stop shopping for them.

Is there a significance performance difference with 64bit? (boot times, office apps, internet, email..)
-
I don't think you will see any performance improvements in any of the mentioned apps. But then again, I don't notice a difference between my A8Js and my 450Mhz P3 system for those aps (boot times are better for sure).
THe big benifits are in RAM access for multimedia development apps. Also improved kernal security features. The reality is that I could do most of what I do with a computer on a 300Mhz P2 running Windows 98. But the geek in me just won't allow that to happen. -
Question is, will games run just as well on the 64bit version? =(
-
-
I did the same, i believe the unknown devices were the card reader, and the buttons at the top of the a8js. -
Core 2 Duo is slower in 64bit modes, unless there is some heavily optimized 64bit application (i.e., where there is need for 64bit integer operations, for example I don't think games will need that, they are on the floating calculations side)
-
Im still thinking about the 64 bit 32 bit dillemma
Do you think most software I use will run in 64 bit vista? -
What can kind of software are you thinking?
I assume that the following software will get the greatest boost: compressing, encoding (i.e., ciphers, etc.), maybe rendering and encoding (DVD->xVid etc.)
Although in the case of the last they will be faster due to multi cores.
If C2D would be as fast in 64bit mode as in 32bit, there would only be the drivers issues, but in 64bit some of it's instruction merging capabilities are disabled, so there is a performance hit.
P.S>
But I would still recommend getting 64bit, if anyone has capable CPU, but not necessarily using it right away (e.g., waiting for drivers or SP1, or software). But it's strange that MS is giving only 32 or 64, I thought they were going to give you 2 versions...
And from what I heard form others, 2GB RAM for VISTA is recommended, 1GB only for the brave ones :> -

First of all.. you're not going to have boost in performance until the software you're running on the OS is 64bit as well. Vista 64bit will support all 32bit software - that I've had to use anyway - and even though 64bit software to run on it won't be around for a while, it's not going to hurt anything. I told people they shouldn't sell their year old system.. or even worse, couple month old system just to get the Core 2 Duo, but if you have it, at some point you'll be upgrading to a 64bit OS - so either get it free now, or purchase it later...... either way, it doesn't matter, but getting the 64bit isn't going to kill you....... It will run everything you have currently... it just gives you the option to run 64bit software when available. XP 64bit sucked.... we didn't even offer it on our 64bit systems, even back many years with the athlon64... the OS stunk....... Vista more more built around and it seems to be pretty good so far.
In terms of drivers - they'll be out... Wait until closer to February.
Vista licensing upgrade?!
