When I press fn + F1)my W1 enters sleep mode, BUT only for a short time. After about 30 seconds it automatically powers up again! If I just leave it then it will eventually enter sleep mode of it's own accord and stay in that mode.

Anyone else had this problem. It's vey annoying and has done this since I bought it.

    I have an Australian W1SGC.
    Any help appreciated.

    Justin

Are you trying this on AC power or on battery power?

    I see....
What I think your computer is trying to do (when it comes back on after you put it to sleep) is go into hibernate.

I know that if I try to manually put my computer into sleep mode by pressing Fn+F1...after a few minutes, it will turn itself back on, then hibernate on its own.

I think your computer may be trying to enter hibernate mode (unsuccessfully). Have you tried enabling Hibernate?

Well hibernate on it's own works perfectly well. I can do this by pressing the orange power button which is set to the go into hibernation. The machine then goes off. Pressing the power button again powers up and everything is as it was!
So sleep does work but something is making it wake up prematurely. :(

Try sleep mode when you're plugged into AC power.
Chances are, it'll stay in sleep mode...

Well waddya know... It does stay asleep while plugged into AC power.

Hmm so it's a battery thing? It wakes up pretty quickly when on battery power - after exactly 1 minute - I just timed it.

I think I might have solved it - in the Power4Gear configuration for battery mode it has Sleep timeout in 2 minutes followed by Hibernation in 3 minutes.

I am presuming that if I force it into Sleep (fn+F1) then it will try and go into hibernation in 3 minutes (like you said)... Just going to test again. Personally, I would prefer that if I put it into Sleep mode then it stays that way!

No still not working - it seems to be on an endless cycle of sleeping and waking up.
    Here's what I did:
(fn+F1) to force sleep - sleeps for 1 min
    wakes up for 2 mins
    sleeps again for 1 min
wakes up again for 2 mins
goes back to sleep for 1 min
    ...etc

So you seem to be right in that it can't seem to hibernate.

It's probably some background thread still going.

I've never had any success in getting that function to work so I just do it via the start menu ---> shutdown ----> standby.

I suggest you go that route.

Check what you have running in the background to see if anything is interfering there.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Ummm, yeah I just tried out the FN+F1 sleep function and POW, what a dumb idea.

I had winamp running and when I did use it, I saw my screen go all nuts like an overheated videocard would and then blank screen.

I tried to come out of sleep by hitting whatever button, but nothing worked so I held onto the power button to turn off my system.

I rebooted and windows said I had a critical error.

I guess I should've tried that function out with no programs running.

    Oops.
