The W1 wasn't coming back to the states, not because of the similiarities to the W2, but because the design is 2 1/2 years old and the V1 is confirmed for Fall and effectively the replacement for the W1 in the lineup. The V1 is by far technologically superior to the W1.

I either want a W1, V6j, or the replacement to the V6j which would hopefully be very similar but widescreen and with a better video card.

that's right klezmer41, the V1J is roughly the widescreen version of the V6J.

The V1J has numerous amount of features:
    15.4" WSXGA+
    1.3mpx Webcam
    Fingerprint reader
    Modular Bay
    Spill Proof Keyboard
    Bluetooth
    Mini DVI port
    and so much more.

Many are waiting for it arrival.

Please check out a thread called "V1J is a go"
This thread contrains basicaly all the info you would need to know about the V1J and its details.

The V1j is basically a mix of the W1 and V6...... that's the best way to describe it quite honestly..... I also might describe it as a larger W3, but that goes right along with the first comparison anyway. A super thin 15.4" like the V6 is likely, but it's graphics would be limited (if you could consider the V6j's graphics limited), because of it's thickness. Asus' research seems to support 15.4" notebooks as "large"... almost "desktop replacements". This would make be believe that they'd rather focus on smaller version of the V6 (like the M9 which is a 14" regular ratio that is super thin)..... but a super thin version of the W3 would probably be more likely.

    Proportable,
Your above statement is very strong, and i'm curious to know how you come to that conclusion, because i can think of at least 3 things the W1J has in it's favour that the V1J doesn't,

    1. Carbon fibre lid (F1 teams use this material so it must be fairly advanced technology)

    2. Digital/Analogue Tuner

    3. HDMI (few noteboooks on the market have this, so technologically speaking seems pretty advanced)

Yes the V1J has features that the W1J doesn't, spill proof keyboard (nice idea), fingerprint reader (why do i need that?), webcam (nice, but not a unique feature and can't compete with an external webcam).

I would have thought if it was far superior technology wise, they would have used a superior material to improve build quality.

I don't like the V1j. There is too much wasted space on the LCD panel and I also don't like the regular-style panel hinges. Apple MacBooks have a cool hinge, and so does the V6j and W1jc. I even like the Lenovo Thinkpad style hinges but not the regular boring kind.

Two other cons of the V1J:

    1. That fingerprint reader between the touchpad buttons bothers me a lot. Should've put it near the top of the keyboard somewhere like other laptops do.
    2. The V1 is just plain not as sexy as the W1

Yeah i think the quality of the hinges is something that is often overlooked, but quite important. I read some feedback recently, i think it was about one of the Sony models, not sure, but the user was saying that even when typing there was movement of the screen, backwards and forwards, this really isn't ideal, and would probably drive me a little crazy.

I think a lot of thought has gone into the design of the w1, w2 series from both a practical and cosmetic point of view and they have produced close to the perfect balance.

Well, it looks like allasus.com took down the W1Jc preorder. Oh well.

I just returned the W1Jc because the fan runs constantly at 3000rmp. It was louder than my desktop PC and I could hear it (in my very quite appartment) from more than 10 meters away. Just to let you know, I was VERY dissappointed :(

EDIT: it really runs constanly, even if you don't touch the computer for several hours and CPU temp is down to 43°C.
