    Hi,

I'm looking to buy a notebook to use at home. I work as a CAD draftsman so I want to be able to do some CAD work at home. This will include 3D modelling/rendering. Also I'm going to use it as a TV/DVD player substitute and for all the usual web browsing etc as well as the odd game.

I'm tossing up between three models of Asus and had a few questions about them. Basically it's down to the W1773Nup, W1776Gc or waiting for the W2V.

Firstly I was wondering how the brightness of the WSXGA+ screen on the W1N compares to the 450nits quoted for the WXGA on the W1Gc.

Secondly how much difference will there be in real world use between the 2ghz 533fsb 2mb cache PM cpu and the 1.7ghz 400fsb 1mb cache cpu?

Thirdly is there a big difference between the ATI 9600/9700 and X600 graphics cards?

Fourthly does anyone have any experience using the WSXGA+ screen on the W1N? I'm wondering if in use the resolution is too high for the physical size of the screen. If I want the higher resolution am I better off going for a 17" notebook?

Finally other than the obvious 17" screen is there any other reason why the W2V would be a much better machine? Or worse for that matter.... :)

Thanks for reading and any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. For reference I can get the W1773Nup for £1250, the W1776Gc for £1500 and the pricing for the W2V hasn't been fixed yet but I'm guessing it will be around £1900. So if I went with the W2V I'd probably order it from o/s.

    Thanks again,

    Phil

    Phil,

You really should search this forum...... there are topics just on this first page that go to explain basically what will suffice your needs as far as graphics power.

From what I saw, the W2's colorshine screen is brighter than the W1's mattetype display..... Someone said the W2's brightness was like 99 or 199 nits or something crazy like that, but it's brighter than the W1....

SXGA+ is a very high res for a 15.4", but it's a very usable res at 17" .... I don't think you can really go wrong.

Not a WHOLE lot of difference between the 9600/9700 and x600... but the x600 enables hypermemory which in my our work proves to be one of the most beneificial improvements which help basically any program from autodesk....... they all basically want to use ONLY video memory and not system memory... but hypermemory opens up the system memory and sort of tricks the graphics card into using it when it's memory gets filled..... works very well.

Thanks for the reply Justin. Is the X700 in the W2V going to support Hypermemory?

According to Intel all the processors in all the versions of the W1 have a 2mb cache and 400mhz fsb. Do you know if this is correct? There seems to be a lot of contradicting information out there.

Thanks for all your help. I'm definitely very keen on the W2V but a combination of really needing to get the notebook asap and the W1 being much cheaper is keeping it in the running. Have you had any further news on when the W2 will be in stock?

    Thanks again,

    Phil

No, I don't think so... ATI said they are only using that on the x600's.......

About the W1, that's correct, they're using the 855 chipset, not the new 915...... anyone giving anything different is lying to you.

We're still looking at a month or so till it's here in the US.
