First off, I'm going to buy a W2V or N6210 in the next month. I plan to use it for video editing among other routine computer tasks (internet, email, DVD movies, etc...).

Ok, I've been reading these posts for a while now. From what I gather the W2V has a fan that is constantly running. Is this true or not?

If so, is it really annoying? Say a 1 is powerbook quiet and a 10 is a dishwasher on its rinse cycle. I understand that a high end laptop is going to need a fan and it's going to make some noise, but there has to be a point where is becomes too distracting. I want to know if this is the case with the W2V.

Also, since the noise factor is such an issue these days, I wish there was a better way to define it, especially, when a consumer may have no way to judge for themselves.

    Any help is appreciated.

For me the way it is now it's probably a 2 or maybe a 3 at worst on your scale. If you're really concerned I'm sure Speedfan or something similar will be updated to suit our machines soon. But if you're video editing the computer is going to be working pretty hard so you wouldn't want to shut the fan off too much.

2 or 3 ain't bad. I'm happy to hear that.

I fully expect the fan to be cranking out the noise when editing video. It's those quiet times when I'm just browsing the net that I would hope that the fan noise is relatively low.

I'd put it this way: you can hear the fan only in an absolutely quiet room with closed windows. And yes, it's on all the time. If you have any windows open, or, moreover, a standalone airconditioning unit turned on, then the fan is unnoticeable.

I have faith... I hope ASUS will release sooner or later (but not never...) a BIOS update to control the fan in idle times.
I give it a 2-3 in your scale but I think that the fans should be turned off when the user is browsing the net or typing whatever... because too much battery is wasted with the fan turned on (even when you're watching a XVID movie, the CPU is under 10% usage so it also should be turned off).
