So, I start to notice that the lid makes a squeaking sound when it's opened. I check it out and see that the lid is separating from itself. I investigate further and notice that there is a screw that holds the thing in place but the inner bolt/sleeve that the screw is attached to has been ripped apart and is useless. It fell out in pieces.

So, what should I do? The 2 year warranty expires on 06-Oct-2007, but I have no idea if this would be covered or would be worth the effort. Is there a chance that the whole right side of the lid could break off?

I would recommend trying to get it fixed under warranty. A 17" display puts a lot of stress on the hinge area and what you are seeing suggests that the design isn't quite strong enough for long term usage. If you don't get Asus to fix it then you will need to try some DIY repairs before the problem spreads.

To make it explicit, unless you fix it, there's a chance the problem will become worse, possibly leading to visible cracks and the hinges not supporting the screen.

Uggh! the screen is already starting to separate from the inner lid.

I think I'm just going to have to ride this out to it's disasterous conclusion. Then it's just a matter of replacing the lid or buying another notebook.

    Nothing lasts forever guys!

If you still have warranty, certainly send it in.
