I have an Asus W3N that I have been using for about a week now.

There is one thing that disturbs me quite a bit and that is the fan and the noise from the computer. By usign the Utility that comes with the notebook you can follow the temperature and fan speed.
When you are browsing the internet in the configuration "super performance or high performance" (Power gear preferences) the fan quickly speeds up to 3000rpm and the temperature is around 58 degrees celsius (whatever that is in fharenhiet) and it usually stays that way, even for hours. I find this disturbing since it is quite loud actually.

When I put the computer in "Game mode" the temperature goes down as well as the fan speed. I thought "game mode" was a demanding task.

I wonder if there are other people that have the same "problem" with W3V or W3N.

In the manual that comes with the notebook there is a picture of the bottom of the computer that show vent holes for cooling both under the CPU and under the HD. I dont have any holes on the bottom of my W3N only on the right side. I found one picture of a W3N that did have the vent hols I´m "missing" in a review, I think it was "mobile-review" something.

When looking at the pictures of the bottom of the W3V posted in this forum by "meijern" "Pictures of my new W3V" there no holes either. link http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15096

Could this be why the fan keeps going at high speed since it doesn´t get the proper cooling effect.

Could this be a construction problem (failure)??

    I´m confused...

I thought that the difference (well, one of them) between the W3N and W3V was that the W3N had a dedicated graphics card (64MB 9700?) anmd the W3V uses the new integrated chip. Perhaps that is actually the difference between the cooling requirements

No, thats the W3a... the N uses the ATI 9700.. and the old 855 chipset.

    Thanks,

ps you may wanna download cpu-z its a free toy that shows your cpu clock speed in real time, amongst other things. May help ya a bit?

Well when on a/c both super and high performance keep the cpu at full speed, thus its eating up the max amount of power and thus creating heat regardless, even if it aint doing any work. Game mode switches the cpu dynamically depending on load, thus in times of high demand cpu goes full tilt, but when just surfing the web etc it will cycle down, normally to ~600, this will save heaps of power and thus create less heat, therefore fan won't come on as much etc. This is how PM get longer batter life ! So its not a problem, it is what is supposed to happen, I suggest using game mode while plugged, esp if your concerned with heat/noise, 99.9% you won't be able to tell the difference between the three modes when plugged in anyway.

thanks "underpantman" for your comments. I knew you could trust an Aussie..

I still find it strange considering how some W3:s have vent holes on the bottom and some not, it clearly show vent holes in the manual.

Another thing is "meijern" test results where his fan runs smoothly at 1200rpm instead of my 2500-3000rpm. Are there big differences between the old processor and the new sonoma?

    Comments anyone...

My W3A CPU temperature stays around 53C on max power - similar to yours. However, the fan spins at only 1500RPM - and at this speed is not really audible in a room with a bit of ambient noise.

    thanks "georgem"

I´m getting more and more convinced there is something wrong with my W3N. I´m gonna call ASUS on monday and see what happens.

Well you could expect that the ATI9700 would create more heat then the intel gpu, so maybe that is contributing to the need for more fan speed, and given that they are quite different models its possible that they may have slightly different chassis, esp since different parts of the world are getting different models. Also if the M6 is anything to go by, updating/changing bios's can have huge effects on fan performance, and indicated speeds...maybe this is worth a go?
I guess the main question I have is does the laptop sound really loud? If not then I wouldn't worry to much, sit back and enjoy a kick arse machine...my M6Ne runs at around the same temps 50-55C, and has similar hardware, 50C is v.normal and quite safe....if it was geting to 85+ then I might be getting concerned...how does game mode go for you, does it help reduce fan load/noise? I know that if I have mine on high performance my fan will run pretty much all the time @3000rpm, but in game its nearly always off.
