Are these generally the same notebook? I am wondering because I might purchase mine when I go to Hong Kong.

    Thanks

Yes they look the same however the global site specsw can sometimes be different and confusing. Other then that it is infact one and the same.

Important thing to consider when you're looking at an international model are the following.

    cpu
    ram
    hdd
    color
on the w3.... the US model has s-video out, not everyone does.

But it's the W3000 series.... those extra zero's are filled with other numbers internationally to represent the country sold and configuration... we don't do that here because we don't have multiple configurations of the same system.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Okay, thanks. One more question: What disadvantages will I have if I bring it back to North America? Regions, outlets etc.?

Is there a way to change the region back to North America?

I don't know where you're getting it..... but....

You'll need an ac adapter cord or a plug converter.

You'll probably be limited to the dvd's from the region you are buying it.

You can usually change the region code five times before it locks to the last one selected.

Okay thanks guys, those replies really helped me. I think I'll get it in Hong Kong then. One final last question, what about the warranty? If it breaks when I bring it back to North America, is it dead?

The DVD region is really a non-issue. The '5 changes' limitation can very easily be circumvented with a program called DVD Genie. You can also flash the drive to an RPC0 firmware, which is readily available (try Google). The power converter costs around $2-$3 from an electronics shop. In short, I doubt you'll have any compatibility issues.

The specs of the international models are often better than their US counterpart. Here in Australia, for example, the W3030V, as it's known, will ship with a 100GB hard drive. I'm not sure what the Hong Kong specifications are, but it's likely to be cheaper than buying it in the US with no significant limitations or differences.

Should be fine....... unless you're getting some great deal there's no real difference. If you buy it here before the end of July you'll get an extra year warranty though.

What I meant was that if I bought it in HK, would the warranty be void here in North America?

what do you mean if you buy it before end of july... the extra yr warranty is the 3rd on top of the 2yr that was instilled around May, isn't it? why then is it going 'away'?

From what the dealers in this forum have said, the third year is a promotional, time limited thing. It is only offered until the end of July.

Correct... this wasn't some permanent thing they started... it was just for 3 months.
