Hello everyone I will be needing a laptop for college in the coming weeks and was wondering if anyone thinks the last refresh of the W3J (W3J-H037P) is still a viable option for someone who will use the laptop for at least 2 years.

The most demanding game a I play right now is Guild Wars, and I will be a Computer Engineering major doing development stuff, will the size and age of the W3J be a detriment to me if choose to buy it? If it will, can a recommendation of a nice looking, reasonably powered, more current laptop for less than $1400 be made?

    Thanks

As counterpoint, however, I would point out that while usapatriot's suggestions are all the newer C2D models running Vista, they are also all in Asus' budget line. The W3 series was, shy of the V6 perhaps, the best quality and build of Asus' Ensemble models over the past 3 years before Asus replaced it with the V2.

While the last W3J revision is technically now (barely) a generation old, it will be more than capable of handling anything you throw at it in engineering coursework over the next 2-3 years. I would, personally, take the higher build quality and workmanship of the W3 over the A/F series - but recognize that you will have a "slight" hit in gaming and processor prowess :). Vista is not yet all it's touted to be, anyway.

If you're gonna play newer games like crysis I suggest you get one of the newer 8600gt notebooks, for anything else it should still be good to go.

As someone with W3J, I second that.

I also just upgraded my 1.83Ghz Duo core for a 2.33Ghz Duo core2 processor, it will keep me going nicely for a few more years
