for me its much easier to manually set my clocks in the ati tools since changing in ccc tends to be useless when trying to underclock when on ac power..its just strange that way..i just have two profiles in ati tools and load one or the other depending on what my uses are

Yeah, but doesn't power play do things other than underclock the card? I thought it shuts off parts of the card and lowers voltages as well. You can't do that with underclocking. I have tried to underclock ATI cards in a laptop before, and you don't really gain anything from it over powerplay.

Ummm.... 3Dmark05 isn't a set thing. You won't get the same number every time. Usually results are +- 100. It could be your configurations. Whether or not you have V-Sync on, and your detail settings can affect your score.

Wait does this driver work for ASUS W3J ? I see the graphic card under the support cards. But I don't see ASUS under notebook manufacterers.

funny...I couldn't get it to work...I just installed it and it came up with an error that unfortunately it couldn't continue installation...WTF!

EDIT: Actually...I guess what I downloaded was "Installation Verification Software" and that is what caused the error and stopped install...

Make sure you are using mobility Catalyst drivers. You also need to download them directly from the site. You probably tried to do it the normal way. This involves ATI verification. Asus has not given approval to use ATI drives on their notebooks, and as such, you will have a little trouble downloading them. The link has been posted numerous times on this forum, search around for it.

    ...^ Thanks I guess...

I'm downloading from the ATI site and b/f I can get to the drive download it forces me to install the verification tool, which then prevents installation of drivers.

Yes, that is what I was talking about. Instead of downloading the verification tool, you want to download the drivers directly. But you can't find where they are, the only way to get them is through the verification tool, which re-directs you there. Fortunately, someone managed to locate the drivers on ATI's site, so you can download them without using the verification tool. I don't know the link off-hand, but I'm sure you can find it in one of the thread here. It might even be in this thread a few pages back. Probably is.

Wait, should I uninstall CCC before downloading the drivers or not? Does the install come with CCC?

BTW I have stock right now

It does come with CCC. You can uninstall it if you want, but I really don't think it matters.

Not bad at all. My score of 6805 crushes it, though. And that system is a year old and was built on a budget of $1000. But hey, desktops have a huge advantage over laptops. 4160 is still a respectable score. =) Much higher than the majority of laptops on the market. Higher than my Z96J, too. But my memory is underclocked... Asus clocked it at 370 rather than 450. Oh well.

Ok so I switched to cat 6.7 and CCC so I could use powerplay. Everything works fine. When I want to change something I just load up CCC- it takes a while if CLI.exe isnt on autostartup but thats ok. After I finish I just turn it off and then eliminate the process. I am still getting ~4200 in 3dmark05. I think I get a little better with powerplay completely turned off.

The wierd thing is my temps on my cpu have dropped a bit - even when I have powerplay all the way up. Mind you I still have a cooling pad but my cpu temp is now hovering at 52 as opposed to 56 before when interneting and random stuff. I don't think I've changed anything else and it generally seems cooler. Not a huge thing but I thought it was interesting.

Temperatures depend on a lot of various factors. One of which is the ambient temperature. If the last time you recorded temperatures it was 80 degrees in your house, and how it is 70, then all your computer temps should have dropped around 10 degrees. It depends on how long the system has been on and whether or not the cpu has had time to build up heat. It also depends on fan settings. CPU useage is a big factor- if you were changing webpages faster than you were previously, your cpu will be under load more often, thus generating more heat and raising the temps.

OK. Good. Glad to hear it.

I am really confused. My score for 3D Mark 2006 was 2067.
    My score with 2005 was 3949. :D

I am not sure what version of ATI Cat I am running?

How do I find out if I am running the 6.8. I downloaded driver already, but first I want to make sure what driver I got. Does my score look good, or is it supposed to be higher.

    Please and Thank you.

    Your scores are fine.

I don't see why people always make such a big deal over a specific benchmark. Who cares if you get 3800, 3900, or 4200 in 3Dm05? It's just an artificial benchmark. All it means is that your computer runs that benchmark more efficiently than someone else's. But that person might be able to get a couple extra frames in your favorite game than you can. But you're still not going to notice a difference.

Do people buy expensive computers so they can run benchmarks, or so that they can run programs and perform tasks? Shouldn't people care about the tasks they do rather than benchmarks?

Oh, and you can find your driver information from within CCC. It'll list it under information. But for some reason, both the desktop and mobile versions of 6.8 are listed as 6.7 in CCC. Someone forgot to update it.
