    HELP!!

Right I have a big problem... hope someone can help me.

When I boot up my W3J I get the Asus logo then a black screen, then the computer restarts and dose it again and keeps doing that in a loop.

I cannot get the restore partition to work, nothing happens when I press F9.

I have tried the CD restore method twice but it also doesn’t work. It completes installing the drivers from the driver CD and restarts, then it goes into the "Asus logo then a black screen" loop of death again.

I have also tried using the Windows XP Recover Consol and using FIXBOOT as I thought that might be the problem. No luck.

I have contacted ASUS, then the website I brought it from, because I have had it less than 7 days I can return for a replacement.

I would like to try and fix this, as I don’t want to have to return it, and then wait for it to get fixed or be sent a replacement. Anyone got any ideas of how to fix this?

    Thanks a lot!

    Maff

Hi Maff, could it be a problem with your RAM? Does your W3J come with standard RAM or did you upgrade/change the originally installed RAM?

Press Tab to Hide the Asus Logo. Can you see what it's saying (line by line)?
Use pause key to read all of it...
And also press F2 from the moment of start it brings up the setup utility.
Go to the part relative to HDD.
    What it says?
Do not change anything.Browse and post anything abnormal.
Your HDD might have been damaged.Or it's boot priority might have changed.(meaning that it will not search for anything)

I had it upgraded to 2GB from asuslaptop.co.uk

I remember using a RAM checker on an old PC i was trying to fix that you booted from a CD. Do you know what it might have been called?

what dose "checking NVRAM..Update OK!" mean? that’s the only bit i don’t know.

The rest seemed fine, found the HDD and CD drive.

The BIOS seems all ok, nothing abnormal there.

No, "checking NVRAM..Update OK!" is a friend!
What happened before you fell into this loop? (did windows do anything stupid (I mean more stupid than usual)

Right, nothing showed up bad during the memory test.

I managed to install i normal copy of XP HOME and that was fine, no problems booting.

I then tried using the recovery partition by pressing F9...

.... Then I got this error "NTLDR is missing, Press any key to restart"

So a press the any key, doesn’t reboot and I get this message

"Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

This happens every time I boot the laptop now.

    Now what’s going on now?

If you are sure the xp install went smoothly, try going into BIOS on startup (F2) and check whether CD is set in the BIOS as first boot device? Sounds like it might be going to CD first rather than HD.

    Ok

Been playing around and managed to get a normal copy of XP Home to install and to boot correctly.

Then after that i used the CD recovery disks and it works fine now, so im not sending it back.... few!

    Thanks for your help!

I had the very same problem after I did a new install, but I ended up getting a c0000218 error due to not converting to ntfs before installing programs.

Edit: The 2nd installation went fine but now if I have the laptop connected to the powersupply then unplug while on it resets the computer. any hints?
