I'll add my name to this list...just placed my order.

    Watch out for upcoming sarcasm:

    Johnny-
OT...but it's generally a bad idea to use a debit card over the internet...credit cards are much better because you maintain control of who has your cash.

Can anyone go into a little detail as to screen quality, specfically related to extensive use outdoors. Is the W3J with color shine best suited for this type of use?

For outdoors, LCD's are ****, no matter what 'technology' is put into it.

But glossy screens tend to be easier to see outdoors, as long as you are facing the sun and the sun is not behind you :)

Trust me I know what I am doing with my debit card. It has a 1k line of credit on it(on top of the cash in the account). I only keep enough in there to pay current bills. It has safety features that prevent people from spending my money. My bank protects me from fraud by limiting my responsibility to 50$if someone else spends my money. I check it every day and only purchase from Reputable sites. It has a daily limit to protect me also and I can raise that for purchaces like this real easy. No worrys!

Therefore the W3J will not be good outdoors with the color shine screen?

Not just the W3j, but every laptop out there. However, with crystal shine and colour shine, which are ASUS's terms for enchanced contrast and glare type screen, which is a glossy screen with enchanced backlighting, vivid colours and more contrast, it will fare better outdoors then regular matte screens.

I'm pretty sure it has both. Whenever ASUS has a glare type screen laptop, it always comes with both. But when theres a matte screen, its either regular or comes with crystal shine.

I am itching to pull the trigger as well but I think I will wait since I don't need it until August, when classes begin. I'm planning on adding on the warranty and 6cell battery. I figure June would be a good time for me to order it. Congrats (or precongrats?) to everyone who preordered!

    Asus doesn't make this easy......

Crystal shine is simple Asus' high brightness technology.... can be on matte and glare type displays........ V6v was just "crystal shine" matte type

Color shine is Asus' glaretype display..... all color shines also imploy crystal shine.. so it can't be color shine without crystal shine.... making crystal shine almost dumb to even mention - but then people say, well why does this one have high brightness and that one doesn't.... which is untrue.... so asus instructs us to use both......

Then we have colorshine w/ IPS like on the V6va.... and that's IPS, color shine and crystal shine...

actually i can also wait for as long as half year before pulling the trigger, but since the price is probably not going down any time soon, so i'll probably get it earlier, as soon as i read the first few reviews

    Guys / Gals,

I appreicate someone making note that our advanced order page was up...... so I'll use this thread to just post some new information...... One reason our sales guys hate advanced orders is because they cloud up the phone lines with people wanting information (when all applicable info is already on the site) and then they have people who have orders in wanted to change this or that. Now... this is why I handle them myself. Note that the advanced order page has changed a bit to help answer some of the common questions about what's going on...

    1. close to 20 of the people with orders already in have already requested one thing or another be added or subtracted from their order - this is a pain in the butt and adds to processing time and is really going to slow things down. I'll take care of them, but from now on, if you want to add or subtract anything - your order will be voided and you'll have to place another and go to the end of the line..... I'm sorry - I've got to keep order with this thing because I know how they can get out of hand.

    2. Because of all the orders we've had in just the last day - I'm moving the processing day back to sometime in the first week of April, instead of the second...... This is more popular than the W3v was in it's first week of advanced ordering, so I know we're going to need more time and to get people's systems out ASAP - they need to be processed ahead well ahead of time. --- the ONLY way this will change is if Asus has some hold up prior to processing that pushes the ETA back.... you'll all be updated though obviously.

    3. If there are a lot of you on the fence and thinking about waiting till the unit arrives - you're doing yourself a disservice..... Asus is physically placing their order today and they're basing their order on a mix of last year's first shipment sales and a good bit on how many advanced orders we already have compared to last year..........I know we'll have a flood of orders for the rest of the week, but I hope those who know they want it during the first week have already gotten their orders in, so they'll be sure to be taken care of...

Any canadians ordering one from the states? If so have any idea what the Duty will be on the laptop? I would order one from the states but I am scared that it would be like 20 percent Duty then tax on top of that =/

You can always order in Canada as well, out of province for only GST and no PST for you cheapos :D

No pre-order in Canada as of yet though, perhaps if you wait a bit, there could be a waiting list.

Your answer is listed in the section you quoted. I almost missed it myself, no its not on the new lines coming out.

Two important updates for all your advanced order guys....

    1. As of today (Asus order day), they are now saying the 1.8ghz cpu will be used instead of the 1.6...... I've got to verify that, so 1.6 will stay on the site, but they said I could bank on it.

    2. Asus is trying NOT to have to change the price from the $1,799 they've already set on - so we MAY be looking at an 8x Dual Layer instead of an 8x Super Multi drive.... The only difference there is is doesn't do DVD-RAM discs - and I've never used one, so I don't think it's a huge difference, but they simply said it's not finalized.

    * Now - if there's something drastic, like a price increase because Asus tells me they really upped the configuration - then everyone will have a chance to void their order of course..... This is really the sticky situation I wanted to avoid until the order was already in production (because it's finalized at that point)...... but I think everything will be for the better.

Thats just awsome news a little nice bonus. Seeing as how Asus already announced the price I bet they will try hard to not change it. I would not care one bit between a dual layer dvd and a multi dvd.

what if to keep the $1799 price point they decide to use 2 x 512mb chips for the memory, or 1x 1gb 533mhz chip instead of the 1x 1gb 677mhz

If they use 533 I will just buy some new memory it doesnt void the warranty. If they use two sticks of 677 I wont care. I am sure they would change the optical drive before the decided to change the memory configuration. I guess we will just have to wait and see. It should be finalized and go into production within the next two weeks for sure, probably this week.

i hope they don't increase the price because that would mean i'd have only enough money to purchase the notebook without the 2 year warranty, unless Proportable accepts 2 credit cards as forms of payment one for the notebook and one for the extended warranty.

i honestly hope that they don't increase the price

    The difference between 2 x 512mb 533 and 1 x 1gb 533 or 1 x 1gb 677 is so little that it doesn't make any sense....

Now... as far as the price - Asus confirmed it to me, which has been confirmed for a good month now..... but it's "public"... so they technically could change it, I just don't see a big reason why...... we'll see what happens.

.... I suggest no one worries or even gets their hopes up... just play it cool and we'll see what happens.

Just make not in the special instructions that you're going to be sending over your student ID and would like the $50 discount..... and then just fax it over to our 800 number along with your order id just to make sure they go together........... but on these advanced orders - I'm taking care of all of them - at least for now... so fax it in and they'll email over a copy of it to me and I'll take care of it... but send it in after you place the order.

Student discount can not be used with the any of the member discount options..... I'm not going to hold it against anyone for bringing it up, but it's one or the other.... and usually the free 2day shipping is worth more anyway.

Yeah you can email it - email it to me though.

D*mn, that is a heckuva nice looking lappy. Great price too.

I love this Sony SZ160 but if this W3J had been available when I just couldn't wait another second to pull the trigger, I would have been all over it without a second thought. Would've saved myself a cool $700.00 at least too. Even now I'm considering the unthinkable and selling the Sony and grabbing one of the W3Js in May. Ahh, the old ball and chain would kill me dead the second the box showed up at the door.

Here's hoping the W3J lives up to the hype. Enjoy!

Man, I have used every bit of chicanery, deception, back door deals, excuses, sneaking around, denials, counter-accusations, scheming, bribery, etc., available to one person in a lifetime to get these things through the door. She knows all the angles and is all over it like white on rice. The minute the UPS truck pulls up, I'm a dead man.

Wow - the proc bump is a pleasant surprise! I'm hoping that all the other things stay the $ame of course.

At this point, I just hope to see a final "picture" of the US bound unit soon. Those pics on Asus Global have me drooling - I HOPE THE TOUCHPAD AND MOUSE BUTTONS STAY THE SAME!

EDIT: Maybe they're planning this as a segment buster - introduce or bring it out at a low price to grab market share?!
